How Weight-Loss Journey Helped Kusha Kapila Overcome Childhood Trauma

Influencer and actor Kusha Kapila is known for her fierce, funny, and unapologetic demeanor. Kusha Kapila rose to fame with her viral South Delhi character sketches on Instagram. However, she stole all headlines when she dropped several kilos. While many attributed her weight loss to Ozempic, others praised her for her weight loss transformation. Tired of the endless speculations, Kusha Kapila took to her YouTube Channel to open up about her weight loss journey. Kusha Kapila's Weight Loss Journey In the candid video, Kusha Kapila revealed how her childhood trauma around her weight, starving to get fit, and other unhealthy weight loss practices shaped her journey. The Thank You For Coming actor shared that the discussion around her weight loss transformation and people calling her an "average girl" turned into a "goddess of beauty," which affected her. "Someone else was talking about my body more than I was… I started feeling like I wasn't even in my body," she said. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kusha Kapila (@kushakapila) Kusha Kapila cleared that this is not the first time the 35-year-old has lost weight. She started gaining weight when she was 10, and shed the extra kilos when people started calling her " motu" when she just turned 12 or 13 years old. Her mother enrolled her in a gym, and she did a lot of strength training and floor exercises along with running on the treadmill, which helped her lose 20-22 kg. She gained 10 more kg at 22 when she was in college, and a friend noticed her bad mental state and told her to "work on herself". During this time, Kusha Kapila followed an extreme calorie-deficient diet that helped her lose weight. Eventually, she got a fever for 12 days, which was later identified as abdominal tuberculosis - a rare form of TB that affects the organs in your abdomen. This is more common in women over the age of 25 with compromised immunity. "Women over 25-26 are more prone to TB. I was diagnosed because I had dropped my immunity so drastically… I was losing weight, which I liked. This is how body image issues play with your mind. You are sick, you are losing weight, and you are happy that you are nearing your goal weight," Kusha shared. She added that she ignored her body completely when her career took off, but Kusha Kapila decided to lose weight again. "For the first time in my life, I felt like I wanted to lose weight for myself. I told myself: 'You are by yourself now. You're responsible for everything that happens in your life. Take care of yourself, because no one else is coming'." Kusha Kapila On How Strength Training Helped Her Lose Weight When a fan asked Kusha Kapila about her weight loss, the Sukhee actor shared, "I just fell into a routine. I changed cities and to cope with it, I spent time moving, walking, gyming, eating well, and it just showed." Stating that she does not think that it's necessary to justify why she worked on her body, Kusha Kapila added, "I am in my 30s, and it was bound to happen at some time because I really tried all these years. Last year was the year it happened, it's as simple as that." Kusha Kapila's weight loss story. Photo: Reddit Crediting strength training for her physical and mental health, Kusha Kapila wrote, "The impact strength training has had on my mental health. I wish they taught about the benefits of just activity and moving and how it can, over a period of time, change how you are feeling (for the better). I wish they taught that in schools. Any time I felt like I was dipping in Mumbai, I hit the gym or I moved."

‘Those tikku-tikku mottu comments; relatives never let you be': Kusha Kapila reflects on her lifelong weight loss journey in new GRWM video

Digital creator and actor Kusha Kapila has always been known for her wit, candour, and funny storytelling. While her ongoing journey with weight loss has been publicly documented over the years, her recent transformation marks a notable shift. This time, there's a difference in her approach — she appears more grounded, healthier, and genuinely committed to sustainable change rather than quick fixes. In her latest YouTube video, a 'Get Ready With Me' episode like no other — Kusha opens up about her relationship with her body, navigating weight loss through different stages of life, and why this has never been about a 'makeover.' 'I don't think mera makeover hua hai,' Kusha says in the video, brushing off the sensationalist headlines that call her transformation a glow-up or a reinvention. 'In the last month, I've seen so many transformation reels about myself that I feel like I'm having an out-of-body experience. It's like someone else is talking about my body more than I am.' Instead of focusing on quick-fix tips or diet fads, Kusha stresses the importance of introspection. 'Everyone wants to know how I lost weight — I want to talk about why. That's more important,' she says early on in the video, while doing her makeup. Her 'why' is rooted in a complex mix of early body image struggles, family pressures, academic expectations, and the ever-shifting relationship with one's own self-worth. In the 21-minute video, Kusha recalls becoming aware of her body when she was just 10 years old. 'People around me made me conscious of my weight. You know, those tikku-tikku mottu comments. Relatives never let you be,' she says. She added, 'In 10th grade, when I had my boards, I ended up gaining a lot of weight. A lot of students do, by the way, and there was a lot of pressure.' After finishing her board exams, her mother enrolled her in a local gym. 'Movement is medicine — that's what she said. I ran on the treadmill, did strength training, and did floor exercises. I think I lost 20–22 kilos.' In college, the freedom and chaos of a new life took over. 'I was shocked at how different the world was outside my mother's supervision,' she says, recalling how she didn't even attend classes, instead immersing herself in theatre, friendships and food. 'I used to just go for my nukkad natak (street plays) because I became part of the theater society. I felt this is my world, this is my everything,' Kusha recalls. Kusha explains that her body didn't feel like a priority during these years. What mattered more was the validation she received for her humour and presence. 'People liked me for my jokes, my impersonations, my personality. My body wasn't the most interesting thing about me, so I didn't work on it.' And like so many young women, she admits that early ideas of attractiveness were often tied to male validation — something she didn't crave, and often didn't receive. But instead, she found joy and identity among her female friends. 'It was our world, and everyone else was just living in it.' As she approached her 30s, the validation she once sought from her appearance shifted entirely to her work. 'Work became my biggest source of validation. Again, everything was validation-related. This time, it wasn't my body — it was my work.' Then came a dramatic life change, a move to Mumbai. 'I realised I'm so lonely here. I moved at 30. All my fundamental friendships are in Delhi — my peers, my core support group.' That loneliness, she says, became an invisible but overwhelming presence. 'I kept wondering: What will I do? I was nearing 33. At 13, 23, and now 33, will I keep trying to lose weight once every decade?' Driven by curiosity more than anything else, she got a full-body checkup. 'The results were alarming. It was one of those report cards where everything was just red. I couldn't afford to be this lazy about my life anymore.' And then came a new challenge — one that, for someone with a camera-facing job, felt almost cruel — adult acne. 'At 29, I suddenly got adult acne. And if you've never had acne in your life, it just hits differently. It's crippling — emotionally, mentally. Especially when you don't know why it's happening.' She added, 'Every doctor kept saying the same thing: You have to change your lifestyle. You need strength training, weight training. That's the only way your acne will go.' When she finally began seeing her skin clear up and experienced a change in her mood, it felt like a win. 'I was like — acne, your time is up. Bahut ho gaya.' Under professional supervision, she started taking care of diet and doing consistent workouts, the details of which she did not share as she stated that everyone is different and she is no expert. But she reiterated that fitness is necessary to feel better mentally and physically, and she feels like a new person now.

Kusha Kapila breaks SILENCE on her drastic weight loss journey: 'I was diagnosed with..., was starving...

Kusha Kapila's dramatic weight loss has sparked online buzz, with many speculating that whether she has used popular weight-loss injections like Ozempic. Now, putting all the rumours to rest, the content creator-cum-actress has addressed the real reason behind her transformation. In a candid video on her YouTube, Kusha Kapila shared the difficulties she underwent during her transformatory period. She said that at one point she avoided eating so much that she contracted abdominal tuberculosis, which impacted her both mentally and physically. Kusha said that she was feeling detached from her transformation, like she was watching someone else through constant reels and headlines. She described it as out-of-body experience, as others discussed about her appearance more than she did herself. Kusha Kapila on dealing with body issues since childhood Sharing her experience, Kusha said that her body image issues began early on, as she put on weight at the age of 10 and faced oppressive comments and nicknames such as 'motu.' Even at the age of 12 or 13, she began losing weight, but people continued to scrutinise her about whatever she ate. As she was preparing for her 10th-grade board exams, Kusha Kapila put on a lot of weight which made her mother decide to do something about it right away. With the end of the exams, Kusha's mom signed her up for a gym that resembled a skhada (traditional wrestling arena), insisting that she start to lose weight thereafter. She started working out, doing cardio, strength training and other exercises. She ended up losing 20-22 kilograms in this period. While Kusha was feeling better about how she looked at the age of 15 or 16, internally, her body issues were strong. She said she didn't understand how tough those struggles would last. Like most teens, the positive feedback she got each time she transformed made her think it was the most important outcome. With time, she began to realise, 'Why worry about appearance, at least I'm funny and friendly,' and focused more on her personality than her looks. People noticed that Kusha's humour became something that everyone could connect with. She began to understand people liked her funny impressions, jokes, and unique personality. Because of that new perspective, she felt her body was normal the way it was. Kusha Kapila on her 'unhealthy' weight loss journey By the time she reached 22, she had put on another 10 kgs and faced health problems both physically and mentally. She didn't know what to do, feeling confused about the future and having trouble understanding her own goals. One night, a friend sent her an image, reminding her to concentrate on herself. Kusha was going to the gym but eating only about 800-900 calories per day, mostly simple foods. Because of calorie-deficit diet, it resulted in rapid weight loss but not increase in muscle mass. However, while others admired her thinness, Kusha slowly started doubting whether she should try to get thinner to be noticed or to get healthier. Kusha realised she wasn't eating well, which led her to fever that lasted for 12 days. Several test results left doctors confused until tuberculosis (TB) came out as the possible reason. Because her diet was extremely low in protein, her immunity became very weak, and this eventually led to her being diagnosed with abdominal TB, which happens more often to women of her age who have weak immune systems. Following that, she decided to prioritise her health, and realised she had to look out for herself because no one else would do it for her anymore.
