Voting for GCMMF top posts today
Vadodara: Elections for the top two posts in the powerful Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) will be held in Milk City Anand on Tuesday, after a gap of two and a half years. The heads of 18 co-operative milk unions of Gujarat, who are members of the GCMMF board, will elect the new chairman and vice-chairman of the federation, which markets dairy products under the brand name Amul. Currently, the chairman of the Sabarkantha District Co-operative Milk Producers Union Limited (Sabar Dairy), Shamal Patel, and Kutch-based Sarhad Dairy's chairman, Valamji Humbal, are holding the two top posts. The duo, who were elected to these posts in July 2020, have already served two terms of two and a half years each. Observers point out that the recent developments at Himmatnagar, where milk producers linked to Sabar Dairy staged protests which spiralled into violent clashes with the police, have put Sabar Dairy's chief, Shamal Patel, on a sticky wicket. Sources said a decision on the new chairman and vice-chairman will be taken by the leadership of the BJP, given the fact that the saffron party now has complete hold of all the milk unions of Gujarat. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Casa Maquista chefs explore turmeric's essence in Macanese cuisine. Since 2006, the GCMMF chairmanship has been held by Banaskantha-based Banas Dairy (Parthi Bhatol), Mehsana-based Dudhsagar Dairy (Vipul Chaudhary), Sabarkantha-based Sabar Dairy (earlier Jetha Patel and now Shamal Patel), and Anand-based Amul Dairy (Ramsinh Parmar). Banas, Mehsana, Sabar and Amul are the four biggest milk unions of Gujarat. The post of vice-chairman, which was created in 2015 through an amendment to GCMMF bylaws, was first held by Panchmahals-based Panchamrut Dairy's chief, Jetha Bharwad, and is currently held by Humbal. Anand district collector Praveen Chaudhary told TOI that the election will be held from 11am onwards according to the GCMMF bylaws presented to him. GCMMF has a unique voting pattern where all district dairy union chiefs who are board members have one normal vote each. In addition, they carry additional votes that are counted based on the business that the dairies they head transact with the federation in the financial year. With 3.6 million dairy farmers associated with the 18 milk unions of Gujarat, GCMMF is the world's largest farmer-owned dairy cooperative. Its group brand turnover is more than $11 billion, while it handles more than 12 billion litres of milk every year.

Union minister applauds Sarhad Dairy's salt cooperative
Vadodara: Union minister for cooperation on Sunday applauded Kutch-based Sarhad Dairy for registering the first cooperative for salt production. After successfully milking the ship of the desert, Sarhad Dairy is all set to exploit another of nature's treasures — the salt pans of the Rann of Kutch. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "Salt was the only segment left untouched by the cooperative movement. Today, that gap has been filled," Shah said while addressing a gathering a function in Anand that marked the 4th Foundation Day of the ministry of cooperation. During the function, Shah launched a series of projects. Lauding the registration of Gujarat's first cooperative society in salt production, Shah acknowledged the role played by Valamji Humbal, chairman of Sarhad Dairy and also vice chairman of the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) that markets products under the brand Amul. The salt cooperative is expected to unite small 'agariyas' — a community engaged in traditional salt farming practices — on a common platform. "The profit for producing salt will now go to the agariyas (salt pan workers)," Shah said, adding that it will help become a model for small salt producers. Talking to TOI, Humbal said that the salt co-operative has been registered under the name of Shri Kutch District Coastal Area Salt Producers and Sales Co-operative Society Limited under the Gujarat Co-operative Societies Act last month. "We plan to procure salt from the 'agariyas', process it, and sell it through GCMMF under the brand name Amul," Humbal told TOI, adding that to begin with, Rs 15 crore investment will be required for processing the salt procured from the 'agariyas'. "There are nearly 5,000 'agariyas' in Kutch alone who produce salt on land of ten or more acres. This initiative is expected to increase their income by three to fourfold," he said, adding that Kutch alone accounts for nearly 35% of India's total salt production. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "If one considers the total salt production in Gujarat, Kutch and neighbouring Surendranagar district contribute maximum to India's total salt production," he said. Adani commissions India's first off-grid 5 MW green hydrogen plant in Gujarat
The Adani Group has announced the successful commissioning of India's first off-grid 5 megawatt green hydrogen pilot plant in Kutch, Gujarat. Developed by Adani New Industries Limited (ANIL), the clean energy arm of Adani Enterprises Ltd. , the plant represents a significant advancement in the country's pursuit of clean and self-reliant energy solutions. An off-grid green hydrogen plant generates hydrogen through electrolysis powered solely by renewable energy—such as solar or wind—without any connection to the conventional power grid. This means the plant operates independently, relying fully on its own renewable energy infrastructure. Describing the development as a key milestone supporting India's National Green Hydrogen Mission, the Adani Group said the project establishes technical feasibility and sets new standards for off-grid, renewable-powered applications of green hydrogen in high-emission sectors. "The state-of-the-art plant is 100 per cent green-powered by solar energy and integrated with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), enabling it to operate completely off-grid. This represents a new paradigm in decentralised, renewable-powered hydrogen production," the company said in a statement. Hydrogen, the most abundant element in the universe, is also one of the cleanest fuels—emitting only water vapour when used. Its environmental impact varies based on production methods. Hydrogen made from fossil fuels is classified as grey, while green hydrogen is produced using electricity from renewable sources to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. Live Events ANIL is building an end-to-end ecosystem for large-scale green hydrogen production and its derivatives. This includes green ammonia, green methanol, sustainable aviation fuel, as well as the manufacturing of solar cells, ingots and wafers, solar modules, wind turbine generators, and electrolysers at its facility in Mundra, Gujarat, aimed at meeting both domestic and global demand. The Kutch-based pilot facility is also India's first of its kind to feature a fully automated, closed-loop electrolyser system that adjusts dynamically to real-time renewable energy inputs. This allows for enhanced operational flexibility to address the inherent variability in solar power generation while ensuring safety, efficiency, and high performance. "This breakthrough reinforces the Adani Group's commitment to innovation, sustainability, and leadership in the emerging green hydrogen economy . It supports India's ambition to become a global hub for green hydrogen production and sets a benchmark for renewable-powered industrial applications across hard-to-abate sectors," the statement added. The pilot plant also acts as a proof of concept for ANIL's upcoming Green Hydrogen Hub in Mundra—an ambitious project expected to significantly contribute to India's low-carbon transition. Green hydrogen is seen as a critical tool for decarbonising challenging sectors such as fertilisers, oil refining, and heavy transport, and plays a central role in achieving global net-zero targets.
