The QPR social media admin rubbed salt into the wounds by trolling the Light Blues with an official announcement which read: "Kwame Poku signs for THE Rangers", followed by a winking face emoji. The Ghana international, who scored 12 goals and provided eight assists in EFL League One last year, has made the step up a division after being a standout in the third tier last season. But he also had the option of European football at Ibrox, with Martin keen to bring him in as a direct replacement for Vaclav Cerny. Poku lifted the lid on his decision to snub Gers in his first interview after becoming a QPR player. Asked why he chose the Loftus Road side, Poku said: "I think speaking to the manager, and speaking to everyone here, the project they are building here excites me and I want to be part of taking QPR to the next level. "When I was speaking to (new QPR boss) Julien Stephan he was talking about where he sees me fitting in and where he thinks I can influence the game. That's what really attracted me. "Being 23 turning 24, I'm not quite young anymore so I want to come in and make my mark from the jump." Chief executive Christian Nourry claimed his side fended off competition from across Europe to land the wide-man. He said: "His decision to join the football club today in the face of interest from Europe-competing teams abroad and Championship teams with significantly bigger budgets than us is a fantastic validation of the direction we are moving in, including a specialised focus on individual player development." New Rangers chiefs Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe's first interview Legendary Peterborough chief Barry was hopeful Poku would choose to make another English club his next home, as it meant Posh would receive a bigger development fee than if he moved across the border. And current club chairman Darragh MacAnthony said: "I am delighted that Kwame has decided to join a club whereby the football club secured a solid transfer fee and a fantastic sell-on clause to continue to share financially in his success in going to the top. "We wish Kwame and his family nothing but the best for the future." Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Kwame Poku tells Rangers exactly why he snubbed transfer for QPR deal

The winger appeared to be closing in on a move to Ibrox but opted to stay in England Transfer recruit Kwame Poku has lifted the lid on why he chose Queens Park Rangers amid interest from Rangers after leaving Peterborough. The forward has been heavily linked with the Light Blues in the past 12 months with Posh director of football Barry Fry revealing Ibrox scouts had watched the player in action. ‌ Russell Martin appeared close to bringing the 23-year-old to the Scottish Premiership in the last month - but in the end Poku opted to remain in England and take the step up from League One to the Championship. ‌ The club took a knowing swipe at Rangers on social media - and the man himself would lift the lid on the decision. Chief executive Christian Nourry also claimed that the R's have seen off competition from across Europe: "His decision to join the football club today in the face of interest from Europe-competing teams abroad and Championship teams with significantly bigger budgets than us is a fantastic validation of the direction we are moving in, including a specialised focus on individual player development." ‌ It leave Rangers to search for another winger as sporting director Kevin Thelwell and boss Martin look to strengthen before the crucial Champions League qualifier against Panathinaikos next month. The club are in talks over bringing in Conor Coady to bolster the defence while Dor Turgeman is a target to boost the frontline with Hamza Igamane and Cyriel Dessers facing uncertain futures. Rangers mercilessly trolled in barbed Kwame Poku transfer boast as QPR get their revenge

Poku was a target for Gers but has opted to remain down south after signing on at Loftus Road Queens Park Rangers have fired a cheeky dig at Rangers after edging them out in the race to sign Peterborough star Kwame Poku. The talented attacking midfielder - who has been capped for Ghana at senior level - had been heavily linked with Gers in the past 12 months, with Posh director of football Barry Fry revealing Ibrox scouts had watched the player in action. ‌ Rangers were said to have an advantage in the transfer tussle over their competitors down south to land the 23-year-old due to FIFA 's cross-border rules on compensation development fees for out of contract players. Russell Martin' s side were confident of landing the midfielder for a fee of around £300,000 in compensation compared to the much larger sums of money needed for clubs in England to secure his services. But it is Marti Cifuentes' R's who have ultimately came out on top, and the English Championship side have wasted no time in poking fun at Rangers expense. In their post on X to confirm their transfer they trolled the Ibrox giants, writing: "Kwame Poku signs for THE Rangers", followed by a winking face emoji. It comes less than three years after QPR fans were left furious by manager Michael Beale's quickfire exit to replace Gio van Bronckhorst north of the border. The former Liverpool youth coach had been in charge at Loftus Road for just 22 matches when he made the move to Rangers in November 2022, having previously worked as Steven Gerrard's number two in Govan. His decision to leave the London side after just five months did not go down well with R supporters including club favourite and former striker Jamie Mackie, who ripped into the Englishman during an appearance on Sky Sports' Soccer Saturday. ‌ He said:: "When Michael Beale came in he was a complete unknown and newbie to management. "He was given a fantastic opportunity by QPR and he quickly spoke about his culture of integrity and longevity. He said he'd even spoke to the players and their families about buying into the project and jumping ship to another club. "But now he's done exactly what he said he wouldn't do and jumped ship and I think that's where the problem is. Everyone would understand if he got the chance to manage in the Premier League, but he was the one who came out and spoke about his loyalty. ‌ "I really question his integrity and I really wonder what other chairman will think of that in the future. Rangers have got a relationship with him and they understand him, but I look at it and go do I want that character going forward? I'm not so sure. "Maybe managing Rangers is his ultimate dream, but I also noticed he was in the stands when the old manager who hadn't been sacked yet was still there. I really don't like that and I certainly don't like that as a manager he was going up there as a 'fan'. "Then two weeks later he gets the job? Well that doesn't sit well with me at all or certainly with an opposing manager. I don't think it was the right way to act."

Rangers ‘eyeing another player from Peterborough' as Kwame Poku chase goes quiet

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) ALL has gone quiet as regards Rangers' pursuit of Peterborough wide man Kwame Poku. But they are still in the hunt for another Posh signing - in the form of giant defender Emanuel Fernandez, according to a report. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 3 Emmanuel Fernandez of Peterborough Utd Credit: Getty 3 Emmanuel Fernandez of Peterborough battles with Marc Leonard of Birmingham City Credit: Getty 3 Kwame Poku of Peterborough Credit: Getty The Rangers Review claim that the 6ft 4in defender, 23, is a player of genuine interest to new Ibrox gaffer Russell Martin. He made 42 appearances across all competitions last season, starting 39 of them. It wasn't exactly a stellar campaign for Darren Ferguson's side, as they limped home no better than 18th in the League One table. Fernandez has spells at Gillingham and Ramsgate on his CV previously. Unlike Poku, Fernandez has a contract at the club until the summer of 2027 - but it remains to be seen how much his services could command on the open market. His fellow 23-year-old Poku had a standout season with the Posh last year with 12 goals and eight assists. But Birmingham City and Queens Park Rangers have all been credited with interest in the player during the current transfer window. That's despite QPR sacking manager Marti Cifuentes only this week, with Frenchman Julian Stephan taking over. Peterborough chief Barry Fry admitted he would rather see Poku join another English club as opposed to Rangers because it would see his team bank a heftier development fee. One time Celtic target - and Dundee loan stand-out - Owen Beck has also been linked with a move.
