Local runners fuel up for a cause
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A number of local runners are fueling up for a unique fundraiser. Lance Smith isn't afraid to lace up the running shoes, logging hundreds of miles every month. The Sioux Falls resident enjoys longer distances and is always on the lookout for one particular business. Headstone statues stolen in Watertown, police look for owners 'All the gas stations kind of have all the amenities that you might want, food and water, use the restroom,' Sioux Falls runner Lance Smith said. Smith has made pit stops at more than 50 gas stations over the past four years, and Kwik Star is next on his list. 'There are seven Kwik Star locations in town, we're starting at the one on East 57th Street, we're running on a continuous loop to all seven locations,' Smith said. He calls it the Kwik Star 50K. 'We'll stop at each location, they range in distance from six miles apart, to five, to four-and-a-half, to two-and-a-half,' Smith said. It's more than 31 miles total, and it's all in support of Feeding South Dakota as the organization celebrates its 50th anniversary. 'When I mapped it out, it was 50K and all a sudden I see a commercial and it's 50 years for Feeding South Dakota. I feel like there is some divine intervention here going on,' Smith said. There's a suggested donation of $50 to run, with Kwik Star matching up to the first $5,000. 'To me, it's just a way that I can use my passion for running and get other people along beside me who also have that passion and want to help people,' Smith said. 'There's obviously a need and it's a great organization,' Sioux Center, Iowa, runner John Brantsen said. 'It's just good to interact with a lot of people that are on the same page as being positive folks and want to do something positive for the community and using running as a tool to do that,' Brantsen said. If you don't want to run 30+ miles, you're encouraged to join the group at the East 41st Street location for the final 2.3 miles and help take a bite out of hunger. 'I've just found that by getting started, by taking off with an idea, finding the right people who also have that passion, you know it will build,' Smith said. The run will start at 7 a.m. Saturday morning at the Kwik Star on East 57th Street, while the final leg will leave the East 41st Street location around 1:45 p.m. If you'd like to help support the cause with a donation, click HERE.
