Cannes One To Watch: Ivorian Artist Laetitia Ky Sets Her Sights On Superheroes With ‘Promised Sky'

Having found fame in international art circles for her natural hair sculptures championing African culture, Black beauty and women's rights, Laetitia Ky has now set her sights on building a cinema career. 'I've always had a fascination for superheroes,' says the globe-trotting Ivorian artist and activist on a Zoom call from Monaco, where she is currently midway through a residency at the principality's Quai Art Studios. 'I've watched nearly all the Marvel and DC Comic movies and read all the comics,' she continues, explaining that it is the non-reality of the superhero worlds that fuels her passion. The Marvel and DC Comic protagonists also chime with the message of empowerment implicit in Ky's elaborate hair-based works — depicting everything from a vacuum cleaner to a butterfly. Ky is in Cannes as one of three actresses in Tunisian-French director Erige Sehiri's Un Certain Regard title Promised Sky. Sehiri contacted Ky on Instagram, where she has half a million followers, after reading about her in the French edition of Elle magazine, as she was on the verge of traveling to the Ivorian capital of Abidjan to scout for actors. Ky's resulting role as a directionless Ivorian student who finds refuge in the home of a journalist-turned-evangelist pastor, does not play heavily on her hair. 'It was important for me that if I'm going to do cinema, it's not only so that productions can use my hair again and again. I want to be valued as an actress as much as the other actresses on the set,' she says. Ky was previously seen on the big screen in Giacomo Abbruzzese's 2023 drama Disco Boy and also played the queen in Philippe Lacôte's 2020 fantasy Night of the Kings. Her next cinema goal is to secure an English-language speaking role, while she is also developing a screenplay about a contemporary female African superhero based on Ivory Coast folklore. 'I spent a few months researching it, going to certain places in the interior of the country, to talk to village chiefs who have a strong knowledge of the culture,' she says. 'There are now still 60 ethnic groups in the Ivory Coast, each with their own customs and beliefs. So, I've mixed modern elements with what I heard.' ‘Shadow Force' movie review: Kerry Washington, Omar Sy flounder in sluggish actioner

A man, Isaac, (Omar Sy) and his super cute son, Ky (Jahleel Kamara) get ready for bed. The boy asks his father whether 'bad men' gave him the bullet scars on his back. Ky falls into a dreamless sleep, confident his father will protect him. The next day the two head out to the bank while listening to a Lionel Ritchie song, which we learn later is special to them. At the bank, while Isaac is quietly going about his business, masked men hold up the bank. Even then Isaac just wants to melt into the shadows and let the heist proceed. Unfortunately one of the bank robbers threatens Ky and that is the cue for Isaac to burst into action. After he efficiently dispatches the low-rent criminals, communication wires spark across the globe as the security camera footage showing Isaac decimating the bank robbers is spread far and wide. Shadow Force (English) Director: Joe Carnahan Cast: Kerry Washington, Omar Sy, Mark Strong, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Method Man Smith Runtime: 104 minutes Storyline: A couple who were elite operatives in their past lives are on the run with their son against a bunch of bad guys A shadowy sniper sees it as well as Jack Cinder (Mark Strong) who is chilling by the pool in Mexico, while his beautiful Rottweilers run about wagging their tails. We learn that Cinder put together an elite crew, Shadow Force, who did the dirty work for the government who wished to keep its hands clean. Isaac was a part of Shadow Force, but when he fell in love with a colleague, Kyrah, (Kerry Washington), which was against the rules, the two decided to leave Shadow Force. The two split up, with Isaac and Ky keeping a low profile while Kyrah hunts down the rest of the Shadow Force who have been offered a jolly bounty for Isaac and Kyrah — that is what she is doing in the shadows with her sniper rifle when she sees Isaac getting rid of the bank robbers. There are also US government officials, Auntie (Da'Vine Joy Randolph) and Uncle (Method Man) on Cinder's trail. Fights break out with monotonous regularity, which no amount of blazing bullets and flying kicks can elevate. There is a distracting lack of logic that makes watching Shadow Force as annoying as grit in the eye. As the bullets fly, you wonder why do all the goons have currency in their backpacks, or why did Cinder change his shirt and remove the Kevlar vest in the midst of a fire fight, even though the shirt he changed into is a nice one and how for a highly trained sniper, Kyrah makes basic mistakes. Randolph gets the few funny lines while Strong narrows his eyes to show he is a cruel person. Sy and Washington float about aimlessly. The only redeeming factor is the locations in Colombia, including Medellín, Cali, Bogota and Cartagena. And to think this film was inspired by Mr. & Mrs. Smith! Shadow Force is currently running in theatres

Nonprofit turns Chicago area teen cancer survivor's story into music

As Stevie Wonder sang nearly half a century ago, "Music is a world within itself, with a language we all understand." It can tell a story too, and a Chicago area pediatric cancer survivor had her story turned into a musical composition —which was performed before an enrapt audience Tuesday night in Skokie, Illinois. Ky Larkin, 14, wrote the story, "The State Champs," at home in Huntley with her three siblings — Kelz, Koco, and Knoxx. All four kids compete in wrestling, so naturally, that is what they wrote about — superpowers and battling a worthy opponent. Battling a serious opponent was something Ky had to do in real life — and in a way far more serious than a wrestling match. "She was diagnosed in December of 2023 with germinoma brain cancer," said Megan Larkin. "She did go through six cycles of chemotherapy and then 30 cycles of radiation therapy." Ky won her fight. "I got to ring the bell on September 17 for beating cancer and being done with chemotherapy and radiation," she said. Before that ringing moment, the Larking family got a call. "An organization called Sing Me a Story reached out," said Megan Larkin. The nonprofit finds kids in need and relies on their creativity to start a story. It's hard to improve upon the genius of a kid's imagination, but what about adding a little music? "I believe in the power of music in storytelling 100%," said Joe Sandy, a student composer at Illinois State University. Sing Me a Story connected Sandy with the orchestra and choir at Prospect High School in Mount Prospect. They prepared for months for the concert Wednesday night at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts, at 9501 Skokie Blvd. in Skokie. "This music is here to uplift her and to inspire her to greatness," said Sandy. The music was inspired by Ky and her imagination. In the orchestral composition, Notes replaced the words and illustrations from "The State Champs" — but Ky could still hear it as her story, sounding better than ever before. "That was awesome," she said. "Like, I got chills."

Crane in place for future 'Vault' project

HENDERSON, Ky (WEHT) – What lies at the site of the former Old National Bank Building on Main Street is now a large crane. That is also the site of the future project known as 'The Vault'. The Vault will contain over 160 residential units, retail space and an underground parking garage. Ground was broken on the $60 million project back in May. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
