Ravens DC Zach Orr offers A1 critique of their new safety tandem

Ravens DC Zach Orr offers A1 critique of their new safety tandem Zach Orr sees something special brewing in the Ravens starting safety tandem. Pay close attention to the backend of the Baltimore Ravens' defense as mandatory minicamp and training camp ensue. How's that for stating the obvious, right? Several OTA practices have already given us so much to talk about. Rashod Bateman is set to enter another tax bracket after signing an extension. Ar'Darius Washington is in a contract season, but he is unfortunately injured. That has seemingly opened the door for the nearly-forgotten Jalyn Armour-Davis, who has since gotten some snaps and worked at the safety position. For the Ravens to take another step in the right direction and get back to the AFC Championship Game, the backend of their defense will need to take a few steps of their own. We know there isn't much to worry about with Marlon Humphrey and Kyle Hamilton. The latter has missed a few OTA sessions, but there's a lot of optimism in the tandem he will form with a newly-acquired and highly-touted rookie. Ravens defensive coordinator Zach Orr has a ton of faith in his starting safety duo. The first three seasons of Kyle Hamilton's career were good enough to inspire the potential envy of NFL stars who are five years his senior. He earned a spot on the Pro Football Writers Association's All-Rookie Team in 2022. He has only gotten better since then. A member of the past two Pro Bowl rosters, he earned a First-Team All-Pro nod in 2023 before being named a Second-Teamer in 2024. One star alone, however, does not an elite safety tandem make, so Baltimore found an answer and an upgrade during the first round of this past April's draft in Malaki Starks. Saying defense coordinator Zach Orr is excited would be a massive understatement. This past week, he expressed his expectation for Hamilton and Starks as a duo. The NFL is a long way from college football in terms of level of competition, but Starks looks like a sure thing. Baltimore is hoping his skill set translates to the highest level of football. During his time in Athens with the Georgia Bulldogs, he was named a Freshman All-American and became a College Football Playoff National Champion. He was a Consensus All-American in 2023, a First-team All-American in 2024, and has two First-Team All-SEC (2023, 2024) to show for his trouble. He's used to playing in big games. He's certain to play in several this season, and fortunately for him, though the pressure to perform will come quickly, he doesn't have to do everything on his own.

PFF ranked Baltimore Ravens' Kyle Hamilton as the best safety in the NFL.

PFF ranked Baltimore Ravens' Kyle Hamilton as the best safety in the NFL. originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Baltimore Ravens have a rich tradition on defense, and now they have something else that fits that tradition ... Advertisement As they employ one of the best defensive players in the entire NFL in safety Kyle Hamilton, and he will be looking to lead the team to the same success they had in 2024 this season. In a recent article by PFF's Zoltán Buday, he ranks who he believes are the top 32 safeties in the NFL heading into the 2025 season. And at the top spot, he has the 24-year-old Ravens star stealing the show. "Hamilton showed off his versatility in 2024, moving to free safety for most of the second half of the season after playing mainly in the box or as a slot cornerback initially," Buday wrote. "He was also the most complete safety in the league as the only player at the position to earn at least an 88.0 PFF grade in coverage, run defense and pass rushing." The Ravens selected Hamilton out of Notre Dame with the 14th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, and they have not looked back since. Advertisement He finished the 2024 season with a very impressive 107 total tackles, with 77 of them being solo. Hamilton was also able to show his ball-hawk skills by snagging an interception and defending nine passes. The Ravens lost to the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Divisional round this past season, so Hamilton and the rest of the team's defense will be looking to help lead the team back to the playoffs to redeem themselves. Nate Wiggins Impressive Ravens' Brass With Weight Gain

Nate Wiggins Impressive Ravens' Brass With Weight Gain originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Baltimore Ravens' recent stretch of first-round picks has set them up for long-term success. Nowhere is this more pertinent than the secondary, where safety Kyle Hamilton blossomed into a superstar and corner Nate Wiggins impressed in Year 1. In April, they added high-profile safety Malaki Starks to the unit, adding even more upside to the defense. Advertisement Of course, first-round picks are supposed to come with immense talent; these selections have. But both Hamilton and Wiggins have shown a knack for improving, the latter developing throughout his rookie season. Now, he's aiming for an even better second season, and he's doing it with the power of protein. The young Ravens cornerback is impressing with his bigger frame at OTAs, which he talked about on Friday. "Since last season to know I gained 10 pounds," Wiggins said, via team transcript. "This year, it's going to be like more power, more strength. I'm still training to gain more pounds. I'm not a big fan of eating… [but] I'm forcing myself to eat." Advertisement Wiggins stood out in coverage as a rookie, logging an interception and 13 passes defended. Playing against the run and holding his own against bigger receivers, though, gave him a little more trouble. "Really just, I was just [getting hit] a lot. Injury wasn't my big thing last year, [but] just hitting the ground,' he said. 'With my shoulders hitting the ground, [my] body couldn't absorb the contact [well]. So it was really just getting [ready] my body [to be able to] take the contact." Nevertheless, Wiggins will have a lot on his plate as Baltimore takes on the gauntlet of AFC quarterbacks. He'll be expected to take another step forward on the boundary to give the Ravens one of the league's best secondaries. According to defensive coordinator Zach Orr, he's well on his way to doing so. Advertisement "I thought Nate did a great job going to work this offseason, putting weight on," Orr said on Thursday, via the team's website. "That's a testament to him and the strength coaches coming up with a great plan. Obviously, he followed it. "He's more locked in on his fundamentals and technique on a more consistent basis. He got to that point towards the middle end of the season, but last year, he was just running like a chicken with his head cut off, trying to figure out what to do. Now, he understands the system. He understands the defense. He's been in the league for a year, so he understands formations from offenses.' Entering the league at 173 pounds with 30.5-inch arms, size will always be an issue for Wiggins. Mitigating how much it detracts from his game could decide his fate in Baltimore. 'Man, that guy right there, if he takes his technique to another level on a consistent basis, the sky is the limit for him." PFF ranking confirms what Ravens fans already knew about Kyle Hamilton

PFF ranking confirms what Ravens fans already knew about Kyle Hamilton Baltimore Ravens safety Kyle Hamilton landed at No. 3 on a PFF ranking of the top 25 players in the NFL under 25 None of this matters now. It's also impossible to confirm, but once upon a time, during the 2022 NFL Draft or shortly thereafter, rumor had it that Kyle Hamilton could have landed elsewhere. There were questions about whether or not the Baltimore Ravens would have taken Jordan Davis had he been available. Again, we'll never know, but it makes for an interesting conversation piece. Ultimately, things worked out as they were supposed to. The Philadelphia Eagles traded ahead of Baltimore in Round 1, presumably to halt any potential Ravens plans to acquire Davis. Baltimore went with another option, safety Kyle Hamilton. Both teams struck gold in the process. Hamilton has been a treasure and still has room to improve. Recently, one of the more entertaining platforms for NFL content praised the young man deservedly. Kyle Hamilton lands third on a PFF list ranking young NFL superstars. We're entering year four of the Kyle Hamilton experience, and things are going well. He earned his place on the PFWA All-Rookie Team in 2022 and was a Defensive Rookie of the Year finalist. He has already earned his place on two Pro Bowl rosters (2023, 2024). He was recognized as a First-Team All-Pro in 2023 and received a Second-Team nod one year later. This young man's sky is the limit as he'll be paired with rookie Malaki Starks in 2025. The brilliance is already apparent. That's why Pro Football Focus ranked him third on their list of the NFL's top 25 players under 25 behind offensive tackle Penei Sewell and wide receiver Puka Nacua. QB Jayden Daniels and cornerback Trent McDuffie round out the top five. Hamilton climbed two spots from a fifth-placed finish last season. Here's what Jonathon Macri listed as his reasoning for making the decision: 'Hamilton has quickly established himself as one of the league's top safeties, finishing in the top three at his position in at least one of PFF overall grade, PFF coverage grade, and PFF run-defense grade in each of his first three NFL seasons. Versatility makes him one of the most valuable safeties in the league, and he even brings pass-rush upside, having generated 36 pressures and seven sacks in his NFL career.' In 48 career regular-season games with 36 starts, he has tallied 250 tackles, seven sacks, five interceptions (including a pick-six), 27 pass breakups, and four forced fumbles. Add that to the 35 tackles and forced fumble he has added to the Ravens' cause during five postseason games, and you have one heck of a resume. It will be interesting to see what kind of fireworks he offers this season.
