Victim of downtown Los Angeles knife attack recounts harrowing experience

One of the two victims of a violent knife attack in downtown Los Angeles over the weekend is recounting the terrifying experience he had upon returning home from work. "I have staples in my head that start ... at the crown of my head," said Kyle Levitt. He was just about to step into his apartment complex on Sunday morning after work when he says he was attacked from behind. He believes he was struck at least four times, causing him to fall to the ground. Levitt suffered cuts to his head, ear and right hand with what Los Angeles police are now calling a large butcher knife. It was previously reported that the weapon used was a machete. "Both of the tendons leading to my thumb were completely severed," Levitt said. "I could see them." It wasn't the only similar crime that happened in the area that morning either. About a quarter of a mile away a man in his 60s was also attacked. He died after being taken to a nearby hospital, police said. Sometime after beginning their investigations, police were pointed to the attacker by witnesses in the area. They took the suspect, 26-year-old Caleb Daniels, into custody and recovered the knife they believe he used. "I can say I don't hold it against him," Levitt said. "Obviously, I wish it didn't happen to either myself or the man who unfortunately passed away." He does, however, want Daniels to be held accountable and to make sure that he gets the help he needs. Daniels was previously arrested in March 2024 for a criminal threat, but his case was rejected by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office at the time. As he continues to recover, Levitt is calling the incident a learning experience. "Making sure I'm doing all I can to be alert and aware so something like this doesn't happen again," he said. Daniels is scheduled to appear in court in front of a county judge on July 3.

But the walk home quickly turned violent. As Levitt went to grab his keys to unlock the doorhe heard footsteps running towards him, 'As soon as I went to look up to see the reflection in our lobby door, that's when I had noticed the reflection of a man, and that the running noise had come from him…then that's when the attack started.' recalled Kyle Levitt. Levitt later learned, he was the second person to be attacked that night. A few blocks away, police say the same suspect attacked a 60-year-old man with the same machete and killed him. The attacker hit Levitt from behind, slashing his neck, ear, head, and body. Levitt called for the man to stop and turned around, the man then knocking him to the ground slashing his wrist with the machete then running away, 'That's when I noticed half of my hand had been cut through. So I, both of my tendons leading to my thumb were severed, my Artery was severed in my wrist, the cut went down to the joint of my wrist,' emphasized Levitt. The attack left Levitt with a skull fracture and staples on his head and neck. But worst of all, it left him without the full functionality of both of his hands. As a chef, he's left unable to work, saying it could take months to regain mobility. Levitt was born in raised in New Mexico, but has lived in LA for the last 11 years. He hopes to be back in the kitchen soon, where he hopes to achieve his goal of bringing New Mexican cuisine to Los Angeles. Survivor of vicsious downtown L.A. machete attack speaks out

A trained and dedicated chef in Los Angeles who survived a gruesome and violent attack by a machete-wielding suspect, who had just killed another victim, is speaking out about the terrifying ordeal. The violence unfolded in the early morning hours of June 1, with the Los Angeles Police Department responding to reports of an attack near11th Street and South Grand Avenue downtown. At that scene, police located a victim suffering severe injuries from the attack. Only described as man in his 60's, the victim was rushed to the hospital where he later died. While detectives were on the scene investigating, reports of another machete attack, in the area of Broadway Street and Olympic Boulevard, came in. Police rushed to the second location and a man now identified as Kyle Levitt. Levitt told KTLA's Rick Chambers that he had been walking home from his job at a restaurant and was in the process of unlocking the building doors to his downtown L.A. apartment building when the attacker struck. 'By the time I looked up and saw the reflection in the door, I noticed a man running up behind me,' he explained. 'I put my arms up to say stop and that's when he hit me again.' Levitt sustained multiple serious injuries to his head, requiring staples, a blow to his right wrist that nearly severed his hand. 'My tendons were cut completely down to the bone. My artery was cut, and he was over me at this point and that is the first time that I'd seen that he had the knife in his hand,' he said. HIs attacker never spoke to him but had what Levitt described as 'crazy eyes,' making him think the man was going to swing the machete at him again. Teenage boy, 15, killed, 5 others hurt in parking lot crash at L.A. school 'For whatever reason, he didn't,' he said. 'He sort of stopped in that moment and registered, for whatever reason, that it was over and he ran away.' Someone inside the apartment building heard Levitt's banging on the door and came to his aid. He was rushed to the hospital where he has since undergone numerous surgeries to reconnect his tendons and save his hand. He didn't learn until later that just minutes before, less than a mile away, another man had been fatally attacked by the suspect. 'It was just this set of circumstances in which I was the lucky one,' Levitt said. During an intensive downtown manhunt for the suspect, police located and arrested him. They also recovered the machete believed to be used in the two attacks. So far, authorities have not released the identities of the suspect or the victim who was killed. A GoFundMe has been organized to help support Levitt for the estimated monthslong recovery and physical therapy leaving him unable to work. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
