Red Sox sign first-round pick for $5 million, plus a few other top draft picks
While the Red Sox were picking up a big win at Wrigley Field on Sunday, members of their front office were handling some draft-related business back home. Boston announced its first batch of draft pick signings, with first-rounder Kyson Witherspoon — a right-hander from Oklahoma — headlining the group of players who have already put pen to paper. Witherspoon, the No. 15 pick, signed for a $5 million signing bonus, according to Jim Callis. That's slightly under his slot value of $5,114,200. Witherspoon's bonus is tied for the second-largest in Red Sox history, tying 2024 first-rounder Braden Montgomery (who got $5 million before being traded to the White Sox). Marcelo Mayer's $6.64 million commitment from 2021 is the highest. Witherspoon's bonus is the largest the Sox have ever given to a pitcher. The previous record holder was the $3.65 million bonus the club gave to Jay Groome, the 12th overall pick in 2016. Boston also got a deal done with its second pick (No. 33 overall), Tennessee righty Marcus Phillips, that's reportedly worth $2.5 million (a bit less than the slot value of $2,898,300). Third-rounder Anthony Eyanson, a righty out of LSU, also got a seven-figure bonus of $1.75 million, per Callis. That exceeds his slot value of $907,200. Boston also got deals done with its fifth round pick, Arkansas righty Christian Foutch, valued a bit under slot at $400,000, and its sixth round pick, Georgia righty Leighton Finley at slot value of $364,800. Ninth-rounder Jacob Mayers got $190,000 and 10th-rounder Maximus Martin received $191,300. The Red Sox signed 16 of their 20 draftees. Notably, 11th rounder Barrett Morgan, a right-handed pitcher out of Cowley Community College in Kansas, got a big bonus of $500,000 to prevent him from honoring his commitment to Texas A&M. It's expected Witherspoon — and potentially Phillips, Eyanson and other top picks — will be at Fenway Park to be officially introduced as members of the Red Sox soon. There's no word yet on where any of the signed players, who all reported to Fort Myers, will be assigned to start their pro careers. The five unsigned draftees are second-round compensation pick Henry Godbout, fourth-rounder Mason White, seventh-rounder Myles Patton, eighth-rounder Dylan Brown and 20th-rounder Garrison Sumner. Because draft bonuses are often agreed upon before the draft, there's little indication that the Red Sox don't expect to get deals done with those players. Red Sox' ‘uber-athletic' 1st-rounder cracks Keith Law's Top 60, along with 2 other prospects
A trio of Red Sox prospects have cracked Keith Law's latest Top 60 rankings of minor leaguers at The Athletic. First-round pitcher Kyson Witherspoon debuted at No. 54 overall, while Jhostynxon Garcia came in at No. 46 and top prospect Franklin Arias is all the way up to No. 9 with Law touting his 'All-Star upside.' Witherspoon is the new face on the list for the Red Sox though. Boston took the 20-year-old from Oklahoma with the 15th pick in this month's MLB draft and signed him for $5 million last weekend. Law loved the selection. 'Witherspoon was the top right-handed pitcher on my draft board this year, as the uber-athletic Oklahoma pitcher held 95+ deep into games and worked with a five-pitch mix that should end up with at least three above-average weapons,' he writes. 'His delivery features an unusual movement after separation where he brings his hand almost straight down, described to me by one evaluator as a 'waggle.' It hasn't inhibited his ability to repeat the delivery or throw strikes. I see at least a mid-rotation starter here, and his athleticism and easy velocity point to the potential for even more.' The radar gun was something that director of amateur scouting Devin Pearson pointed to after selecting Witherspoon as well. 'With Kyson, it's big velocity. And he's held it over a lot of innings with some really good breaking pitches,' Pearson said. 'Whether it's his cutter, slider, a lot of upside there to continue to maximize his mix. But a strike thrower with high velo and interesting secondary shapes.' Minor Lines 7/13: Kyle Harrison throws shutout*
If you had told me on Father's Day following the Rafael Devers trade that the Red Sox would hold a playoff spot, and not even the participatory final one (thanks Rob Manfred) after a ten-game-win streak, I wouldn't have believed you. It doesn't even matter if six of those games were against very beatable teams and if half of the other four were privy to Kevin Cash out Alex Cora-ing Alex Cora by turning to his bullpen entirely too early. The team has leaned on guys I was writing about in these very Minor Lines just several short weeks ago. It makes the mind wonder, on a night where the Red Sox selected perhaps the most big league-ready guy in the entire player pool at 15, Kyson Witherspoon, who might be the next player to shoot through this system coming from these Minor Lines headlines to a box score near you, or I guess near Fenway. Could it be Hayden Mullins, who's collecting quality starts across the organization like infinity stones? Could it be Yoelin Cespedes, who's now the farm's sixth ranked prospect and who cleared two doubles on Sunday? How about Blaze Jordan, who interestingly is playing some third even with last week's leadoff hitter Nate Eaton in the lineup? I don't have a crystal ball, so I don't know... with respect to Bradley Nowell, I don't even practice Santeria and I certainly have never had a million dollars. But man, this Red Sox pitching staff looks SUBLIME (come on, you knew that pun was coming) heading into the break... as do MOST of the guys on the mound across the organization. So let's get into it! Worcester: W, 2-0 (F/6) (BOX SCORE) Kyle Harrison went 3 2⁄3 before a half hour delay threatened his scoreless start (not that he would have gotten the decision, anyway, as it took him 92 pitches to record those 11 outs), but the whole game kept the Red Wings (Nationals AAA) in a drought even if the rain in Rochester eventually called the remainder of it off. Harrison's four hits were the only ones Rochester got in the abbreviated contest. Worcester's offense wasn't much to right home about, as they lacked an extra-base hit and went scoreless in six attempts with runners in scoring position, and one of their only two runs was scored via a fielder's choice double play ball, but it was enough to win. They are now two games above .500 going into the All-Star break. Portland: W, 5-1 (BOX SCORE) The difference-maker in this game was a zero-outs, bases loaded two-RBI double by Marvin Alcantara to score both Ehrhard brothers and make the score 3-0, a deficit impossible for Hartford (Rockies AA) to climb out from. But, again, that wouldn't have led to a win if the starting pitcher didn't have the day he had. And, speaking of Hayden Mullins, he's had a lot of great days in Portland this year. In 40 innings since being called up from Greenville, Mullins has had 43 strikeouts and a 1.03 WHIP. He's captured his third win in such time as he added 6 1⁄3 innings of one-hit ball. The 24-year-old lefty can prove to be a hot commodity whether it be in the trade market or just a good asset for the farm to have with a couple more starts like Sunday. Greenville: PPD, Make-Up Day TBD This one got to the top of the third before the rain got to be too much to continue. The Drive burn a Blake Aita start, an occasion that has normally been valuable viewing for Greenville since his promotion from Salem, but he actually was down 2-1 after 2 1/3. This game will likely be completed in two weeks, albeit in Winston-Salem (White Sox High-A), as Greenville is done hosting the Dash this season. Salem: L, 4-5 (BOX SCORE) The lone losers on Sunday thanks to the rain that postponed the aforementioned Greenville game, Salem found themselves victims of a poor start. No one after Joey Gartrell allowed so much as a runner on second, but they didn't have to. Not even 6 doubles combined from three Salem batters (Starlin Nunez, Yoelin Cespdes, and Frederik Jiminez) could propel the Sox over the Braves' A affiliate, the Augusta Green Jackets. Sure, the 2-for-20 Salem put up amongst 12 strikeouts and 14 stranded men probably had something to do with the squandered, well, not just lead, but game, but it just goes to show the volatility of a good offensive game. If the runs aren't scored at the right time, it's all for naught! Have a happy Home Run Derby Monday! More from One Big Question: Will Carson Smith be a second-half weapon? Red Sox sign star righty with 99 MPH fastball to $5 million contract
The Boston Red Sox got a gem. At pick No. 15 in the 2025 MLB Draft last week, they landed Kyson Witherspoon. The right-handed pitcher out of Oklahoma was projected by almost everyone to go in the top-10. And now, the Red Sox signed him just under slot value, getting him for a $5 million signing bonus, per Jim Callis (slot was $5.11 million). The assessment from Callis: "Best college RHP in MLB Draft, fastball to 99 mph, one of best curves in Draft, slider & cutter are weapons too." Sounds pretty great. But Witherspoon is a guy Red Sox fans will enjoy following as he climbs the ladder. And as a proven college pitcher out of the SEC, Witherspoon could move pretty quickly. He's officially signed, and his journey to Boston has begun.
