UNC baseball among favorites to win College World Series

UNC baseball among favorites to win College World Series The UNC baseball program is among the favorites to win the College World Series North Carolina dominated most of the Chapel Hill regionals, losing just one game with a record of 3-1. Now, the Tar Heels are on their way to the Chapel Hill Super Regional, where they will take on Arizona in a best-of-three series for a chance to travel to Omaha and participate in College World Series. Going into the super regionals, the Diamond Heels are tied for the third-best odds to win the College World Series. According to BetMGM, North Carolina and Tennessee are tied at +600 odds to come away with the national championship. That falls just behind Arkansas at +375 and the leader, LSU, at +320 to win. The Tar Heels beat Holy Cross 4-0 in the first game of the Chapel Hill Regional postseason play. They followed it up with an 11-5 win over Oklahoma, putting up six runs on potential top-five pick Kyson Witherspoon. On Sunday night, after meeting with Oklahoma again, they lost their only regional game, 9-5, to force a win-or-go-home game on Monday. UNC came back and dominated the bats, scoring 14 runs to advance. If North Caorlina takes down Arizona in the Chapel Hill Super Regional, they will advance with eight other teams to Omaha for a weekend of baseball that will end with a best-of-three series to crown a champion. What channel is UNC baseball on Sunday? Time, TV schedule for Chapel Hill Regional Final

What channel is UNC baseball on Sunday? Time, TV schedule for Chapel Hill Regional Final Here's all the broadcasting information you need to know for Sunday's Chapel Hill Regional Final. UNC will play the winner of Nebraska and Oklahoma. After escaping Holy Cross 4-0 in Friday's Chapel Hill Regional Opener, the UNC baseball team faced a significantly tougher challenge Saturday, facing the Oklahoma Sooners and future first-round MLB Draft Pick Kyson Witherspoon. North Carolina battled some tough pitchers throughout their regular season and the ACC Tournament, but none like Witherspoon, who entered with a 10-3 win-loss record and sub-3.00 earned rune average. The Diamond Heels knew how difficult of a pitcher Witherspoon was to crack, but took full advantage, jumping all over Oklahoma's ace in an 11-5 victory. UNC (44-12) tagged Witherspoon for six runs in the first inning alone – and nine overall. As a result of its latest dominant victory against a quality opponent, North Carolina advanced to its own Chapel Hill Regional Final, in which it will face the winner of Nebraska and Oklahoma (36-21), at 6 p.m. ET on Sunday for a trip to the Super Regionals. The Diamond Heels used a solid combination of small ball and power hitting to conquer Witherspoon early, scoring three of their six first-inning runs on singles. UNC delivered the dagger far down its batting lineup, when designated hitter Sam Angelo blasted a 3-run shot, way beyond the left field wall in Boshamer Stadium. The Cornhuskers (33-28) eliminated Holy Cross on Saturday morning, 4-1, but not without facing some adversity. The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead, thanks to a Sean Scanlon home run in the top of the fifth inning, but never scored again. Nebraska scored twice in the bottom of the fifth, thanks to a 2-run home run from Cayden Brumbaugh, taking a 2-1 lead it never relinquished. The Diamond Heels could very well face the Sooners again tonight, depending on how the Oklahoma-Nebraska game plays out this afternoon. The Sooners are a better team than the Cornhuskers, so whoever UNC plays, I expect another big victory in Chapel Hill tonight. Sam Angelo, UNC baseball silence 'little birdie,' showcase power in NCAA win vs Oklahoma

CHAPEL HILL — Oklahoma saved its ace for UNC baseball. But the top-ranked Tar Heels had the trump card, using a booming start to secure an 11-5 victory against pitcher Kyson Witherspoon and the second-seeded Sooners on May 31 at Boshamer Stadium. Advertisement 'A little birdie, apparently, was saying that we couldn't hit 95 (mph),' UNC coach Scott Forbes said after his team clinched a spot in the 6 p.m. regional final on June 1. 'I think the guys took that personally." HOW UNC BEAT OKLAHOMA: UNC baseball vs Oklahoma highlights: Tar Heels advance to regional final KNAPP TIME: Grunt, scream, flex: Inside Jake Knapp's 'emotional' start for UNC baseball in win vs Holy Cross Witherspoon, No. 8 on MLB's list of draft prospects, consistently hits the upper 90s with his fastball. The junior right-hander entered the matchup against UNC with 120 strikeouts and just 20 walks across 91 innings. Advertisement The Tar Heels welcomed Witherspoon to Chapel Hill with a six-run first inning — UNC's best start of the season — that included five two-out hits, capped with a three-run home run by designated hitter Sam Angelo in the No. 8 spot. When asked about the 'little birdie' in question, Forbes smiled before shifting his attention to Angelo's performance at the plate. 'I can't give you my sources. But I can tell you that I'm really proud of this guy to my left,' Forbes said as he looked at Angelo during the postgame press conference. 'Here's a guy that has been one of the best hitters in Division III baseball, had an unbelievable fall (season) for us, unbelievable preseason, started the year in the middle of the order. And it hasn't gone exactly as planned. But I tell you what, he has bought into what UNC is about — being about the team first. There's no doubt in my mind that's why he was rewarded in a big situation like that.' Advertisement Among the nine hitters in UNC's starting lineup vs. Oklahoma, Angelo had the lowest batting average (.225) and two home runs through 37 games. He had two booming blasts against the Sooners' top arm, hitting the three-run shot in the opening inning before a 403-foot homer to center field in the fifth. 'That's just a challenge. Like everyone's saying, that really fired us up and we wanted to prove that we can beat an arm like that,' Angelo said. Before he joined UNC ahead of the 2025 season, Angelo was an All-American as a Division III player at Montclair State, where he logged a .416 batting average, 181 hits, 45 doubles, 35 home runs, 151 RBIs, 100 walks and a .789 slugging percentage. As he prepared to face Witherspoon, Angelo said he wanted to 'be on time for the fastball.' The graduate student took a deep breath and stepped into the batter's box for a moment that would set the tone for the Tar Heels (44-12). Advertisement 'I didn't miss that fastball,' Angelo said with a smile. Rodd Baxley covers Duke, North Carolina and N.C. State for The Fayetteville Observer as part of the USA TODAY Network. Georgia falls 3-2 to Oklahoma in SEC Baseball Tournament

Georgia falls 3-2 to Oklahoma in SEC Baseball Tournament The Georgia Bulldogs have been eliminated from the SEC Baseball Tournament after falling 3-2 to the Oklahoma Sooners. Georgia lost its opening SEC Tournament game and will now focus on preparing for the NCAA Tournament. Oklahoma standout pitcher Kyson Witherspoon pitched seven and 2/3 innings and allowed just two earned runs. He struck out eight Georgia batters and won his 10th game of the season. Oklahoma did not walk a single UGA batter and allowed only five hits. "I thought we battled hard," said Georgia baseball coach Wes Johnson. "I thought (Kyson) Witherspoon was the best right-hander we've seen all year." Witherspoon limited Georgia's explosive lineup, which leads the country in home runs. The Sooners advance to play the No. 4 seed Vanderbilt Commodores. "The difference in the game was that they didn't walk anybody, and we walked three and one of those walks scored. There was a play we didn't make a second and a run scores. A walk later in the game scored. When you go against a guy like Witherspoon, you can't make mistakes and give them a chance," added Johnson. Georgia's Slate Alford nearly hit a home run in the eighth inning to tie the game, but Oklahoma caught it on the warning track. The Bulldogs (42-15) will learn their NCAA Tournament fate on Monday, May 26 at noon (televised on ESPNU). Georgia is expected to host a regional and is likely to be a top-eight national seed.
