Community rallies to ‘Save KDHX' as battle over station's future heats up
ST. LOUIS – The battle over the future of the community radio station, KDHX is intensifying. Just days after a St. Louis judge ordered the station to restore voting rights to some dismissed volunteers, the community protested outside of the radio station.
Emotions ran high as former employees, board members, and community members rallied outside of KDHX, hoping to save their beloved radio station. They want new leadership to take over to prevent KDHX from going bankrupt.
Supporters filled the street outside the station saturday, waving signs that read 'Save KDHX', as drivers honked in solidarity
The group chanted for two hours, determined to make their voices heard.
'We are out here today because this is a treasured community institution that we are terrified we are going to lose,' said Courtney Dowdall, KDHX Associate Election Board Member.
For many, KDHX was a hub for local musicians, artists, and businesses. Among those at the rally were longtime DJs, some of whom left in protest last year, and new hosts who stepped in to fill the vacancies.
'The current leadership has just let us down, so it's time for them to step down and let new leadership take hold,' said Caron House, former KDHX Radio Host.
'They shouldn't be able to walk outside of Saint Louis and not feel a deep sense of shame because this is not their station! This is our station,' said Andy J, KDHX DJ.
' We have a lot of community supporters as well! Lots of listeners here. Lots of people who were involved in the music industry know what a huge loss this would be if we didn't have this in Saint Louis,' said Dowdall.
The rally was organized by L.O.V.E. of KDHX, a group raising funds to fight for the station's future. Their GoFund Me has now surpassed $35,000 of its $50,000 goal.
'People want us to be able to build a new board and build new leadership and revive KDHX to what it used to be' said House.
A former host emphasized that KDHX has been a community staple for 38 years — and they will not stop fighting to save it.
Fox 2 reached out to KDHX's Executive Board for comment, and we are still awaiting a response. Click here if you would like to support the L.O.V.E. of KDHX group in their efforts to save KDHX.
