LIV Golf Virginia: Joaquin Niemann wins; Crushers GC take team title

GAINESVILLE, Va. — Joaquin Niemann was once again the man to emerge from a crowded leaderboard to claim victory at LIV Golf Virginia. The Chilean shot an 8-under-63 to earn his sixth LIV Golf win, which is the most of any player. On the team leaderboard, Crushers GC earned its eighth LIV win, which is the most of any team. Crushers GC has now won back-to-back team trophies after finishing first at LIV Golf Korea last month. Captain Bryson DeChambeau, Paul Casey, Anirban Lahiri and Charles Howell III have made up the Crushers since the team's inception. The individual leaderboard was jam-packed with superstars, including HyFlyers GC captain Phil Mickelson and DeChambeau, but also featured past major champions looking to win after long droughts. Smash GC's Graeme McDowell and RangeGoats GC captain Bubba Watson were both in contention until the bitter end. The veterans in the mix played well enough, but Niemann showed once again that he's nearly impossible to beat on Sundays when he's in the mix. Lahiri, who was the 36-hole leader, suffered yet another heartbreak. He finished in a tie for 2nd after shooting a 3-under-68. The runner-up was the fifth in Lahiri's LIV Golf career. Martin Kaymer, the 18-hole co-leader, shot a 1-under-70 to finish tied for eighth — his best finish ever on LIV Golf. Ben Campbell of RangeGoats GC set a LIV Golf record for consecutive birdies made in a single round with seven. The Kiwi birdied the 13th hole through the first hole and ended up shooting a 62. Lee Westwood also shot 62 to match Campbell's low round of the week. Westwood's 62 tied his career-low round on LIV Golf. Thomas Pieters of 4Aces GC shot an 8-under-63. Jinichiro Kozuma and Brendan Steele also had impressive Sunday performances and each shot 7-under 64's. Fourteen LIV players will now turn their attention to the U.S. Open next week at Oakmont Country Club before LIV Golf Dallas takes place June 27-29. TEAM SCORES LIV Golf's new scoring format this season now involves all four scores now counting in every round in the team competition. Here are the results and scores for each team after Sunday's Round 3 of LIV Golf Virginia. 1. CRUSHERS GC -36 2. 4ACES GC -34 3. SMASH GC -31 4. TORQUE GC -25 5. RANGEGOATS GC -24 6. Talor Gooch Asterisk Notion Surfaces after Quitting US Open Qualifying

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. In the world of golf, Rory McIlroy has achieved something close to GOAT status. As one of the sport's biggest names, anything he does or chooses not to do becomes headline news. Just like his recent decision to avoid speaking to the media for four consecutive days, despite being known for his strong opinions. That happened during the second major at Quail Hollow, where the green jacket winner had an unimpressive finish. Now, all eyes turn to the U.S. Open next month. But if McIlroy does win the event, there might be an "asterisk beside it," per LIV Golf's Talor Gooch. Talor Gooch walks out of U.S. Open qualifying On May 19th, Talor Gooch abruptly walked off the course for U.S. Open qualifying with three holes to play. He earned a DNF, as he likely knew advancing was beyond his reach. Golf fans wasted no time mocking him, especially given his previous "asterisk" comment about McIlroy. (Photo by Chung Sung-Jun/Getty Images) More Getty Images Back in 2024, when McIlroy was still chasing his Masters victory to complete the career Grand Slam, Gooch was quick to suggest that if he won, it would come with an "asterisk." Here's the full Gooch quote: "If Rory McIlroy goes and completes his [career] grand slam without some of the best players in the world, there's just going to be an asterisk. It's just the reality. I think everybody wins whenever the majors figure out a way to get the best players in the world there." Although McIlroy later gave Gooch the "benefit of the doubt", the comment sent the golf world into a frenzy, and now, the conversation has reignited. Gooch becomes a laughing stock among golf fans As soon as the news broke, fans flooded social media with reactions. NUCLR Golf posted on X: "This year's U.S. Open will have an asterisk beside it as LIV Golf star Talor Gooch will not be in the field after walking off the course with 3 holes to play at final qualifying. He DNF." 🚨*️⃣🇺🇸 #NEW — This year's U.S. Open will have an asterisk beside it as LIV Golf star Talor Gooch will not be in the field after walking off the course with 3 holes to play at final qualifying. He DNF. — NUCLR GOLF (@NUCLRGOLF) May 20, 2025 One user responded with an iconic meme GIF from Goodfellas, while others pointed out Gooch's lack of major success: "He has 1 career win (RSM Classic) when he played on tour." Compared to other players who successfully qualify for majors, Gooch's record doesn't stack up. Another fan sarcastically referenced Greg Norman's past praise of Gooch, posting: "Best iron player in the game over last 20 years, they said." The result? Heavy criticism of Norman for his exaggerated claims. And the roasting didn't stop there! One golf fan hilariously posted: "Can't call yourself a major if Talor's not in the field." All told, McIlroy moved into legendary status last month while Gooch remains mostly irrelevant in the golf world. 2025 PGA Championship predictions: Expert picks, predictions for 2025 PGA winner The second men's major championship of the year is here, as the 2025 PGA Championship kicks off Thursday morning at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. Masters winner Rory McIlroy, who has made a good living in his career at Quail Hollow, is one of the favorites, but world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler still holds the outright favorite distinction. Bryson DeChambeau, fresh off his win at LIV Golf Korea, is also one expected to contend this week with his length. There are 156 players in the field, including defending champion and world No. 3 Xander Schauffele, but only one can bring home the trophy. Here's a look at Golfweek expert predictions for which golfer will finish atop the field and hoist the signature Wanamaker Trophy: 2025 PGA Championship predictions: Expert picks for 2025 winner Adam Schupak, Golfweek Senior Writer: Bryson DeChambeau Cameron Jourdan, Golfweek Assistant Editor: Rory McIlroy Todd Kelly, Assistant Managing Editor: Tommy Fleetwood 2025 PGA Championship predictions: Longshot picks for 2025 Adam Schupak, Golfweek Senior Writer: Daniel Berger Cameron Jourdan, Golfweek Assistant Editor: Viktor Hovland Todd Kelly, Assistant Managing Editor: Keegan Bradley

Bryson DeChambeau Must-Read Quail Hollow Story from PGA Tour Days

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The PGA Championship is set to host its 107th edition at Quail Hollow, a venue steeped in history. Starting from its legendary winners to its challenging holes, the Wanamaker Trophy, and the evolving format. But for players, understanding every detail of the event is crucial, as even the smallest oversight can lead to career-altering consequences. Just ask Bryson DeChambeau, who learned this lesson the hard way. (Photo by Jared C. Tilton/Getty Images) More Getty Images During his pre-tournament press conference on Tuesday, DeChambeau shared a startling memory from his last PGA Tour appearance at Quail Hollow. A moment that could have jeopardized his career had he not realized his mistake in time. Bryson DeChambeau relives wild Quail Hollow story "Quail Hollow is an amazing place. Charlotte is a great place. I love it here. I've always felt comfortable here," Dechambeau said during the pre-tournament conference at the PGA Championship. He emphasised, "Even when I was playing here on the PGA TOUR, I felt really comfortable." DeChambeau played several times at Quail Hollow during his PGA Tour era. In 2017, he positioned himself at T33 while Justin Thomas grabbed the title. But comfort didn't save him from one of the biggest miscalculations of his career. (Photo by Han Myung-Gu/Getty Images) More Getty Images "I remember, funny side little note, I thought I missed the cut and I was flying back, and halfway through—this is the last time I played." Mid-flight, Bryson DeChambeau discovered he had actually made the cut, his next action was making it to the course the next day. "So I landed, I stayed the night at my house in Dallas and flew at 2:30 in the morning back to go get my tee time, and I finished seventh that week or something like that, I think a top 10 that week." "It was worth it," DeChambeau admitted. For any professional golfer, keeping track of the cut line is critical—it is the difference between earning a paycheck or playing two days for free. In DeChambeau's case, an oversight of this magnitude would have severely impacted his wallet. Interestingly, DeChambeau isn't the first golfer to miscalculate an important tournament detail—others have had their moments of confusion.
