Scholars, athletes and role models: Seacoast Students of the Week for March 31
A top scholar, field hockey captain and student senator pursuing a career in engineering. An honors student, yearbook editor and competitive dancer who plans to study elementary education. An excellent student and field hockey standout who works part time in her city's recreation department. An exemplary student and football captain who recently received the Western Maine Conference Citizenship Award. A talented member of symphonic band and concert choir who excels academically.
Meet the Seacoast Students of the Week for March 31.
This week's students represent Oyster River, Spaulding, Dover, York and Somersworth High Schools.
Seacoast Students of the Week are nominated by local principals, teachers and guidance counselors and, as you'll see below, they reflect a broad range of achievements in their schools and communities. It is our pleasure to introduce you to these outstanding students and we look forward to sharing stories of so many more of our wonderful students in the weeks ahead.
All Seacoast-area public high schools have been invited to highlight their students' achievements each week.
Here are the Seacoast Students of the Week for March 31, as described by the school leaders who nominated them:
Maggie is a kind, caring, and conscientious person who is humble and extremely bright. She takes her responsibilities seriously but goes about it in a way that never demeans others. She is currently taking AP statistics, AP physics, and AP chemistry along with two UNH courses and other advanced classes at ORHS. Maggie continuously pushes herself to work hard and learn more. She is a team player — always willing to help students out in class, whether it is explaining a concept, showing how to set up a homework problem, or helping her lab partner. Willing to try and explore new things, she loves learning.
Maggie is involved in research at UNH and has also participated in the MIT Lincoln Laboratory Radar Introduction for Student Engineers (LLRISE) program. She is friendly, positive, and responsible and always willing to lend a helping hand. She has served on the Student Senate for four years, captain of the field hockey team, vice president of Code Runners club (Computer National Honor Society), and the treasurer for the National Honor Society. Maggie is also a dedicated artist with an impressive work ethic and a keen attention to detail. She creates authentic expressive artworks in her own unique style.
Her desire to help others extends beyond the school day. Maggie volunteers at the Durham Public Library, as well as serving as a referee for middle school robotics competitions, giving back to younger students and fostering their interest in STEM. She deserves this recognition. Through her entire high school career, she has demonstrated her deep passion for STEM and scientific research, is committed to making a positive impact through her academic work and extracurricular activities and makes a difference in the lives of her classmates and friends by working diligently behind the scenes at ORHS. Maggie is particularly passionate about pursuing a career in engineering, specifically in biochemical engineering, and we are excited to see where her future takes her!
Madelyn Hackett is an outstanding senior whose dedication, leadership, and passion for education and the arts make her an inspiration to her peers. A committed member of National Honor Society, French Honor Society, Class Council for all four years, Student Leadership, and FBLA, Madelyn has played an active role in shaping her school community. As the yearbook editor, she has worked tirelessly to create a lasting memory for her classmates. Beyond academics, she has been deeply involved in competitive dance for the past 11 years and shares her love for the art by teaching younger students, demonstrating both her talent and mentorship skills. Her hard work and academic excellence have earned her acceptance into all eight colleges she applied to, and she is currently weighing her options before making a final decision. This fall, she plans to pursue a degree in elementary education, where her passion for working with young learners will undoubtedly make a lasting impact. Madelyn's leadership, dedication, and enthusiasm make her truly deserving of this recognition!
This week Dover High School recognizes senior Leyden Churchill. Leyden is first and foremost an excellent student whose academic prowess is illustrated by her membership in the National Honor Society. Leyden provides leadership for the school community as vice president of the Athletic Leadership Council and for the Class of 2025 for whom she has served as secretary for four years. Leyden has done all this while holding a part time job with the Dover Recreation Department. Leyden has played field hockey and ran outdoor track during her time at Dover High School. Next year Leyden will attend the University of Maine in Orono, where she will play field hockey.
York High School is proud to announce senior Peter Martin as our Student of the Week! Peter is an exemplary student, enrolled in a full slate of advanced placement courses, and serves as vice president of our National Honor Society chapter.
Beyond his academic achievements, Peter is a standout athlete, excelling as both the football quarterback and captain and a baseball player. Notably, he was recently honored by conference administrators with the prestigious 2024-25 Western Maine Conference Citizenship Award.
Peter's dedication to academics, athletics, leadership, and citizenship makes him a true asset to York High School. Congratulations, Peter!
Faith is a junior at SHS, and has consistently proven herself to be a leader in our school. Her dedication, leadership, and hard work truly make her stand out as a role model and sets a wonderful example for her peers!
While here, she has participated in our symphonic band, concert choir, and select choir, and has frequently made a name for herself with her talent and leadership. She has been steadfast in her presence as a clarinetist in our symphonic band, and has taken the time to improve her performance. Recently, she had a leading role in our school musical, "Mean Girls," and did a fantastic job! She has also held a position as one of our choir officers this year, helping to organize fundraising events and keeping the atmosphere of our ensembles positive and enjoyable!
On top of her musical participation, Faith has excelled academically in her classes, and has completed her studies in many different areas with grace and responsibility. Congraulations to Faith on her exemplary work in her studies, both musically and academically!
