I tried it: Olive oil ice cream at Creole Creamery
Creole Creamery in New Orleans is back with another savory experiment: Olive oil and sea salt ice cream. Why it matters: It's surprisingly good and certainly sounds better than last year's pasta water flavor. The big picture: The olive oil ice cream had just a touch of sweetness and reminded me of olive oil cake or the viral TikTok trend of vanilla ice cream drizzled with olive oil (and dates if you are feeling extra). Once it's scooped, a staffer sprinkled sea salt on top. But mine ended up with too much for my taste, so next time I'll ask for it on the side. Zoom out: I thought the olive oil flavor was way better than the "MSG Me!" flavor, which the scoopers at the Old Metairie location told me they've had a hard time getting people to buy. It's made with MSG, walnut blondies, miso caramel and egg custard. It wasn't my thing, but you do you, boo. The real stars for me are Creole Creamery's floral flavors. Every spring, I impatiently wait for "La Vie en Rosé," Champagne violette and magnolia flower to hit the seasonal menu. They added to the botanical bounty this year with orange blossom and marshmallow fluff. I got them in a sampler boat (4 mini scoops for $7.50) so I didn't have to choose among favorites. Between the lines: Creole Creamery also has lavender honey, strawberry basil and white peach and elderflower sorbet right now. So many garden-inspired options! Bottom line: Creole Creamery is doing fun things with ice cream and I'm here for it.
