Labor MP admits to speeding as WA road toll hits decade-high
A Labor MP has apologised — but walked away from questions — after being caught speeding at almost 150km/h in his electorate.
Kevin Michel confirmed he's bracing for a big fine, after reportedly being clocked at 147 kilometres per hour in a 110 zone in the Pilbara.
It is understood he was driving his Labor-party marked car at the time.
'I apologise for my actions, and I'm sorry for what happened,' he told reporters on his way into Parliament on Thursday.
But he did not respond when asked it it is a bad look, as police and the Cook Government grapple with the highest road toll in a decade.
Already in 2025, 122 people have died on WA roads.
Mr Michel repeated his apology, via a statement.
'While I am yet to receive an infringement, recently I was speeding in my electorate,' he said.
'There is no excuse for speeding and I would like to apologise for my actions. Road safety is the responsibility of every driver on WA roads, including me.
'I know I have let my community down and I am sorry.'
Road Safety Minister Reece Whitby has been contacted for comment.
Earlier on Thursday, Mr Whitby called the rising road tall a 'community responsibility' at a press conference announcing the expansion of 40 kilometre per hour school zones at more than 100 locations.
'It really comes down to the responsibility of everyone who sits behind the wheel of the car,' Mr Whitby said.
'We all need to take responsibility for this issue, so government will do as much as we can, and I intend to do a lot with the revenue that's going to flow from safety cameras, quite frankly.
'But again, ideally, I don't want any revenue. I want people to do the right thing behind the wheel.'
