He is now worth an estimated £12.8billion after writing three picture books in 2015, featuring magical creatures named The Monsters. Chinese retailer Pop Mart's site reads: 'The most prominent was Labubu, a small monster with high, pointed ears and serrated teeth.' Pop Mart saw sales more than double last year. A spokesman said: 'This isn't just about 'toys', but a collectible pop culture movement.' Buyers are only allowed to purchase limited amounts. There are also 'secret edition' dolls – with rarer characters re-sold on third-party websites for up to £1,000. Last week Pop Mart – which has 16 stores across the UK – paused in-store sales to ensure the 'safety and comfort' of shoppers following chaotic long queues outside shops.

Labubu Beats China's Panda Diplomacy Anytime
This Lunar New Year, a much sought-after gift has been a plush Labubu, an elf-like character with pointy ears and nine serrated teeth made by China's Pop Mart International Group Ltd. With a mischievous smile on her face, Labubu is taking Southeast Asia by storm. The craze took off last April, when Blackpink's superstar Lisa shared her collection on Instagram. In Thailand, where the singer was born, a Labubu-themed store earned more than 10 million yuan ($1.4 million) on its opening day in July, while comments on the character and its maker have exploded on TikTok.
