Hazleton man charged with stealing gun in Scranton

A Hazleton man stole a handgun from a truck in Scranton, police charge. Officers responded to the 1000 block of Corbett Avenue on Saturday at 4:21 a.m. for a report of a male suspect going through vehicles, police said. A woman told officers a man entered her vehicle and returned later, but she had locked it by that time, according to a criminal complaint. She described the suspect as wearing red pants and a reflective jacket, officers said. The woman informed officers she didn't believe anything was missing and forwarded surveillance video to police, according to the criminal complaint. While searching the area, officers spotted a man — later identified as Luis Caraballo — who was wearing reflective material quickly walking away from a vehicle with an open door in the 1400 block of West Locust Street, police said. Caraballo (Courtesy Lackawanna County Central Processing) Officers heard someone climbing a fence and located Caraballo crawling under a porch, also in the 1400 block of West Locust Street, according to the criminal complaint. The homeowner showed police video footage that captured Caraballo on his deck and damaging a gate on his property, officers said. Officers recovered a chrome Taurus revolver near the porch along with bolt cutters and miscellaneous items, police said. The revolver was stolen from a Dodge Ram in the 900 block of Corbett Avenue, according to the criminal complaint. While being taken into custody, Caraballo told police he was going to visit his girlfriend and didn't understand why he was being arrested, officers said. After performing a background check, officers determined Caraballo is prohibited from possessing a firearm, police said. Police charged Caraballo, 29, with theft by unlawful taking, person not to possess firearms and theft from a motor vehicle. As of Monday, Caraballo remained in Lackawanna County Prison in lieu of $25,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 30 at 9:45 a.m.

A Dunmore couple face charges after hitting officers during an altercation in the borough early Sunday, police said. An officer observed a man pushing a woman in the road — as children were around — near East Grove Street and Prescott Avenue at 1 a.m., according to a criminal complaint. The man — later identified as Abelno Cahuec-Ruiz — started to walk away when the officer left his patrol vehicle, police said. The officer ordered Cahuec-Ruiz to stop, but he continued to walk away, and then began running from the officer, according to the criminal complaint. * Cahuec-Ruiz (Courtesy Lackawanna County Central Processing) * Beatriz (Courtesy Lackawanna County Central Processing) Show Caption 1 of 2 Cahuec-Ruiz (Courtesy Lackawanna County Central Processing) Expand During a foot pursuit, a woman involved in the argument — Karen Beatriz — lunged toward the officer, striking him in the face, while attempting to intervene, police said. The officer kept chasing Cahuec-Ruiz down an alley before the man ran into a fence in the 200 block of East Grove Street, where the couple had been attending a party earlier, according to the criminal complaint. When Cahuec-Ruiz made his way back into the backyard, he was assaulted by a man, police said. Cahuec-Ruiz then attempted to run toward the house, officers said. The officer tripped while attempting to apprehend him and police said Cahuec-Ruiz tried to grab a garden shovel multiple times. Cahuec-Ruiz also hit the officer in the neck, face and body with his elbows and fists, police said. Additionally, Beatriz tried to prevent the officer from arresting Cahuec-Ruiz by shoving him away, according to the criminal complaint. Another officer attempted to assist with apprehending Cahuec-Ruiz, but Beatriz kept trying to pull him away from police while she was being pulled by two crying children, police said. Officers used a Taser to subdue Beatriz and Cahuec-Ruiz and eventually took both into custody, according to the criminal complaint. The children were allowed to stay with an uncle, police said. Police charged Cahuec-Ruiz, 36, with two counts of felony aggravated assault, disorderly conduct, simple assault and resisting arrest. Police charged Beatriz, 29, with aggravated assault, disorderly conduct, simple assault and resisting arrest. Beatriz was released on $5,000 unsecured bail. As of Monday, Cahuec-Ruiz remained in Lackawanna County Prison in lieu of $20,000 bail. A preliminary hearing for both is scheduled for May 19 at 10:45 a.m.

Nanticoke man charged after ramming police vehicles during chase

A 23-year-old Nanticoke man faces charges after officers said he struck police cars with his vehicle during a high-speed chase after fleeing a traffic stop. Members of the Lackawanna County Drug Task Force met with a confidential informant Thursday at about 1:50 p.m. to discuss heroin and crack cocaine sales, and the informant told officers about a man identified as 'Brail,' according to the criminal complaint. Officers conducted surveillance on Monahan Avenue in Dunmore and gave the informant money to purchase drugs, police said. The suspect — later identified as Jabrail Crumbley — arrived at the location in a Ford Explorer. Then, when the informant exited Crumbley's SUV, officers attempted to stop the vehicle for the narcotics transaction by using emergency lights and sirens with two fully marked patrol units and three unmarked patrol vehicles, according to the criminal complaint. Crumbley (Courtesy Lackawanna County Central Processing) Crumbley rammed his vehicle into police cars and led officers on a pursuit that ended on the Casey Highway, officers said. Throughout the pursuit, Crumbley ran his vehicle into police vehicles three times, according to the complaint. He also drove into oncoming traffic at speeds exceeding 100 mph, officers said. Crumbley was treated by medical personnel on scene and refused further treatment, police said. A Dunmore police officer suffered minor injuries and was sent to a hospital for evaluation after the chase led to a three-vehicle crash, according to the complaint. Officers obtained a search warrant for the vehicle after smelling a strong odor of marijuana, and found marijuana, codeine liquid, drug paraphernalia, packaging materials and three cellphones, along with the money used in the drug transaction, police said. The informant also turned over crack cocaine and heroin to police from the drug transaction, officers said. Police charged Crumbley with aggravated assault, fleeing or attempting to elude an officer, possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, criminal use of a communications facility and related counts. Additionally, Crumbley was driving with a suspended license stemming from a previous DUI charge, police said. As of Monday, Crumbley remained jailed at Lackawanna County Prison in lieu of $200,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 3 at 9 a.m.

New York man charged after an investigation into stolen mail in Dunmore

A Bronx, New York, man faces charges following a monthslong investigation by Dunmore police into stolen mail in the borough. Starting in November, the U.S. Postal Service mailbox on Harper Street had been the target of multiple thefts of parcels of mail, police said. Among the mail removed from the mailbox were paper checks that were altered and deposited for large sums of money into various bank accounts, according to a criminal complaint. Through the investigation, officers determined an individual or individuals would place a box – coated with sticky tape and connected to a string – into the opening of the mailbox to 'fish' for mail and pull it out of the box, police said. Two devices were removed from the Harper Street mailbox during the investigation, officers said. Dunmore police have investigated more than 10 fraud incidents since November, with victims being defrauded out of hundreds of thousands of dollars, per the criminal complaint. On Friday around 12:58 a.m., officers stationed on the 100 block of North Blakely Street observed two males standing near the Harper Street mailbox and witnessed them pulling a device out of it, similar to the ones seized in the past, police said. Pierre (Courtesy Lackawanna County Central Processing) The males fled on foot when the police approached, but officers eventually apprehended one of them, Kaden Pierre, per the criminal complaint. During an interview at police headquarters, Pierre told investigators he took an Uber to this area with a friend of his cousin, known only as 'Jose,' officers said. Pierre told officers the two were in the area to pick up a PlayStation 5 and that he was accompanying 'Jose' when they ended up at the mailbox, police said. When Pierre spoke with his grandmother from the Bronx during a phone call at police headquarters, he stated he 'wasn't doing anything,' but 'Jose' was engaged in the activity the police observed, per the criminal complaint. Officers didn't locate the device and detained only one of the males — Pierre — seen near the mailbox Friday, police said. Police charged Pierre, 18, with possessing an instrument of crime, theft by unlawful taking, engaging in criminal conspiracy, resisting arrest, loitering and prowling at night, and theft of mail. As of Monday, Pierre remained jailed in Lackawanna County Prison in lieu of $10,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 3 at 11 a.m.
