India's Lacky Shines At U17 World Wrestling Championships, Reaches 110kg Final

Last Updated: India's Lacky advanced to the men's freestyle 110kg final, beating rivals from Japan, Georgia, and Iran. Gourav Punia is still in medal contention through repechage. India's rising wrestling star Lacky delivered a commanding performance on Friday to reach the men's freestyle 110kg final at the U17 World Wrestling Championships, putting himself on the brink of becoming a world champion. Competing with remarkable composure and technical prowess, Lacky overcame a challenging draw that included opponents from traditional wrestling powerhouses like Japan, Georgia, and Iran. Lacky began his campaign with a statement win over Japan's Hanto Hayashi, earning a victory by technical superiority—a format where the match ends early when a wrestler achieves a certain point margin. He followed it up with another clinical performance, shutting out Georgia's Murtaz Bagdavadze 8-0. In the high-octane semifinal bout, Lacky faced Iran's Amirhossein M. Naghdalipour, a tough and aggressive opponent. The Indian wrestler led 15-7 before pinning his Iranian rival to secure a spot in the gold medal match. He will now face Magomedrasul Omarov, who competes under the United World Wrestling (UWW) flag, in Saturday's final. If victorious, Lacky will join the ranks of India's junior world champions and cement his status as a major prospect in heavyweight freestyle wrestling. Since Kikiniou advanced to the final, Punia earned a second chance through the repechage bracket—a lifeline that allows wrestlers to fight for bronze if they lose to a finalist. Punia now needs to win two matches on Saturday to claim a spot on the podium. Shivam and Jaiveer Singh Exit in Early Rounds India's Shivam (48kg) exited the competition in the Round of 16 after a narrow 6-7 loss to Kazakhstan's Sabyrzhan Rakhatov. Hopes of a repechage path faded after Rakhatov was defeated in the quarterfinal, eliminating Shivam from medal contention. In the 55kg category, Jaiveer Singh started strong with a technical superiority win against Greece's Ioannis Kesidis. But in the quarterfinals, he fell 0-3 to American Greyton F. Burnett. Burnett's subsequent semifinal loss meant Jaiveer also missed out on a repechage opportunity. (with PTI inputs) view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Lacky in gold contention at U17 world championship

Agency: Athens (Greece), Aug 1 (PTI) India's young wrestler Lacky put himself in line to become a world champion by reaching the men's freestyle 110kg title clash at the U17 World Championship, here Friday. Putting up a very impressive show, Lacky beat rivals from powerhouses Japan, and Iran en route to the gold medal. He opened with a technical superiority win over Japan's Hanto Hayashi and followed that up with an 8-0 won over Georgia's Murtaz Bagdavadze. In the high-scoring semifinal, Lacky was leading 15-7 against Iran's Amirhossein M. Naghdalipour before pinning his rival to storm into the final where he will clash with Magomedrasul Omarov, who is playing under the UWW flag. Gourav Punia (65kg) was also impressive, winning his first two bouts by technical superiority without losing a point but lost his quarterfinal to American Arseni Kikiniou. Since the American reached the final, the repechage route brought Punia back in the medal hunt. He now needs to win two bouts to secure a podium finish. The Kazkajh later lost his quarterfinal, shutting the repechage route on the Indian. Jaiveer Singh (55kg) made a solid start, winning by technical superiority against local rival Ioannis Kesidis but lost his quarterfinal 0-3 to American Greyton F. Burnett, who later lost his semifinal to make exit. PTI AT AT UNG view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. India's U17 men's wrestling unit claimed five medals at the Asian Under-17 Wrestling Championships in Vung Tau on Thursday as the Freestyle contingent picked 3 gold and 2 bronze. Gaurav Punia, Arjun Ruhil and Lacky struck gold in their respective events while Shivam and Dhanraj Ganapati added a bronze each to India's tally. However, the team narrowly missed finishing in an overall podium finish and had to settle for a place outside the top-three in the prestigious event held in Vietnam. Punia took top honours in the 65 kg class, while Ruhil topped the 92 kg event and Lacky stood tall in 110kg category. Shivam and Ganapati cliched their medals in the 45kg category and the 51 kg category respectively. The WFI congratulated all the medal winners, their coaches, and support staff for their relentless hard work and commitment. The WFI also extended its gratitude to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Sports Authority of India for their continuous support in developing young wrestling talent. Despite not securing a team trophy, the Indian team's performance serves as a strong foundation for the future and reinforces the potential of our young wrestlers on the Asian stage, WFI President Sanjay Kumar Singh said in a release on Thursday. Earlier in the tournament, the Indian women's team clinched the overall trophy in the women's freestyle competition. Following the success of the Under-23 Women's Wrestling Team at the Under-23 Senior Asian Wrestling Championship in Vietnam, the Under-17 women wrestlers demonstrated exceptional grit, determination, and skill, continuing India's winning momentum. The Indian Women's Team excelled across weight categories, winning a total of 10 medals – 5 gold, 3 silver, and 2 bronze, thus securing the Champion Trophy with 215 points.
