The popular Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup is one of Ascot's biggest meetings and this year's renewal on August 9 will have £500,000 up for grabs. Recently-retired Hayley Turner was the face of the ladies-only team, which had won four of the past six Shergar Cups. Turner, who announced her pregnancy in her retirement statement, snatched the title in dramatic fashion last year with a short-head victory on New Image in the final race. But it's all change for 2025, with the ladies' team axed and a new Asian contingent in its place. Japanese jockey Ryusei Sakai will be the 'star attraction' thanks to his association with Forever Young, the world's highest-rated horse. He will be joined by Mirai Iwata, dubbed the 'rising star' of Japan's jockey league, while Suraj Narredu from India will captain the team. They will wear red silks, replacing the pink of the ladies. Doyle will captain the Great Britain and Ireland squad, while there will also be teams from Europe and the Rest of the World. Doyle, who recently became Britain's most successful female jockey, said: "The Ladies' Team over the years has had great success, but the new changes that have been made, which include integrating the male and female jockeys on the same team, is a nice reminder that we as jockeys complete on a level playing field internationally." While Nick Smith, Director of Racing and Public Affairs at Ascot Racecourse, said: "We're pleased to have secured top talent from across the world to compete at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup with at least eight different countries set to be represented already. "We feel now is the time to move away from a ladies-only team, and this new evolution of the format keeps the event fresh." Youth and experience unite as UAE heads to Cairo for Pan Arab Golf showdown
The UAE Team set to compete in the 2025 Pan Arab Junior & Ladies Championship—scheduled to take place from Wednesday 7th to Saturday 10th May 2025—has officially been announced by the Egyptian Golf Federation. The event will be co-hosted by Madinaty Golf Club and Katameya Dunes Golf Club in Cairo. Twelve Arab nations and regional Golf Federations have confirmed participation, fielding both teams and individual players. The competing countries include: Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and host nation Egypt. Sanctioned by the Arab Golf Federation (AGF) and organized locally by the Egyptian Golf Federation, the Pan Arab Championships will feature several Divisions: Ladies, Boys Under-18, Boys Under-16, and Girls Under-16. These categories will be contested over 54 holes and are recognized as World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) qualifying events, supported by The R&A, with ranking points up for grabs. Meanwhile, the Boys and Girls Under-13 Divisions will be played over 36 holes on Thursday and Friday. A spokesperson for the Egyptian Golf Federation commented, ' We are grateful for the support of the Emirates Golf Federation for this significant tournament on the regional calendar. We will have over 105 players competing from all the participating Arab countries in the various Divisions. The UAE always brings a strong team and we look forward to welcoming them to Cairo.' Final practice rounds at Katameya Dunes and Madinaty Golf Club will be held on Wednesday 7th May 2025, with the Opening Ceremony set for 5 pm on the Clubhouse Terrace at Madinaty Golf Club in Cairo. At last year's Championship in Tunisia, the UAE claimed Gold in the Girls Under-16 Division, while the Ladies' Team secured Silver behind champions Team Morocco. Sara Abubaker, part of the Gold-winning Under-16 squad in 2024, has now advanced to the UAE Ladies Team. Intissar Rich is the only returning member from last year's Silver Medal-winning Ladies' Team and will once again compete in next month's Championship. The UAE Boys Under-18 Team earned Silver last year, and the Under-16 Boys team finished sixth. The Emirates Golf Federation has named a nine-player squad to represent the UAE across the various Divisions, along with a three-member support team: Boys Under-18 Rashed Ali Alnakaby Abdulla Kalbat Boys Under-16 Abdallah Saleem Mohamed Thabet Abdallah Mohamed Darwish Boys Under-13 Zayed Ali AbuBaker Ladies Intissar Rich Sara Abubaker Hannah Cheryl Alan UAE Delegation
