Parkway girls' hoops leaning on Savannah Wilson; named Player of the Week

BOSSIER CITY, La. (KTAL/KMSS) — Parkway girls' basketball has become a powerhouse. The Lady Panthers are coming off of winning back-to-back state championships and are on the hunt for their third consecutive state title. A key part of Parkway girls' hoops is senior Savannah Wilson who is on the hunt for state title number three. Dakota Howard fueling Parkway girls' basketball; named Player of the Week 'Me is we,' stated Wilson. 'We just need to do it again, so we can get another state championship.' Me is We. That's the mantra for Parkway girls' basketball. The Lady Panthers have had a great pipeline of senior leaders and now it's Savannah Wilson's turn to step up this year. 'From last year, I know Chloe was a big part of our team,' reflected Wilson. 'I knew I had to step up and be a leader and be there for my team.' Haughton's Shaniya Perkins named Player of the Week Following in the footsteps of star LSU guard Mikaylah Williams and Tennessee Tech guard Chloe Larry, Wilson has learned a lot about what it takes to be a role model for under classmen. '(You have) to be coachable and always be able to adapt to the problems that are going on.' explained Wilson. '(You have to) be a leader and help your teammate in any way you can.' Wilson would not be the player she is today if it wasn't for the crucial role her coaches have played in developing her both on and off the court. 'My coach and assistant coach have always been on me ever since I was a freshman.' recalled Wilson. 'I feel like having them on my back helped me build character to become who I am now.' Multiple local wrestlers crowned individual state champions The senior's love for basketball started when she was young. It's something she's known her whole life thanks to her family. 'I grew up playing basketball,' Wilson said. 'My dad, his sisters, my mom, and my grandma. I've been surrounded by basketball my whole life.' Like most athletes, Wilson has endured her fair share of adversity. Whether it be an injury or other problems off the court, the Parkway community has helped the senior overcome any obstacle she faces. 'This school has built me up,' recalled Wilson. 'I feel like they've put me in a good spot to know who I am and know myself.' THE LATEST — High School Sports News While Wilson isn't sure where she'll be taking her talent next, she is sure of what kind of a legacy she wants to leave at Parkway. 'I want people to remember me as a nice person,' shared Wilson. 'That I was very loving and focused. I want them to remember that I love this sport, and that I left it all on the court.' Wilson will now be eligible for the Landers Dodge Player of the Year award, which comes with a $2,500 scholarship. The Player of the Year Banquet will be held in May 2025. Palmetto High School girls' flag football team hunting for 2nd-consecutive state title

MIAMI — The Palmetto High School girls' flag football team is back on the hunt, looking for their second consecutive state title this year. "If we did it before, there's nothing stopping us from doing it again," said senior Serenity Simon. "Our motto this year is we're back on the prowl," added head coach Kevin Mujica. "Trying to set that standard of everything we do, we want to compete at a high level. We don't want to be complacent with anything." A mixture of returners and transfers, the Lady Panthers know they've got a target on their back now but they consider the pressure a privilege. "Playing with that pressure, I think it's fun," said senior Ash Alvarado. "I like being under pressure." A pressure that's already doubled the number of girls planning to play flag football at the collegiate level next year. "Knowing that I could go and pursue the sport that I love so much for 4 more years and get my degree while I'm at it, is just another amazing experience and an amazing feeling," Alvarado said. They aren't stopping there though: Palmetto's players helping grow the game to levels much bigger from they ever imagined. That's senior Serenity Simon, an NFL Flag Player of the Year finalist, who landed a spot in a Super Bowl commercial shortly after playing in the Army Bowl. "The 12-year-old version of me who just had started flag would've never even imagined that I would be in a Super Bowl commercial," Simon said. "Out of the corner of my eye, I'm like wait - is that Serenity? Right next to Ki'Lolo and all these other flag stars and I was like no way!" Alvarado said. It wasn't the only Super Bowl commercial that had people talking though: Nike's "You can't win. So win." spot drawing in eyes. "It just showed off how us women have to not only support each other and people from the outside, especially on social media, etc. are always bashing and always complaining and it's like yeah, you can complain but at the end of the day, if we can't win and show that we're a part of the sports community, it doesn't matter," said senior Ava Alvarez. A reminder of how far women in sports have come and the endless road of opportunities we have ahead. "Some would say 'Oh yeah, you're kind of making little landmarks in history' but it doesn't feel like that," said Dani Canals. "Honestly it just feels like having a love for a game and playing on the field with your friends. It feels very home, very humble. It doesn't feel [like] anything too crazy until you look back and realize what you've actually done."

Dakota Howard fueling Parkway girls' basketball; named Player of the Week

BOSSIER CITY, La. (KTAL/KMSS) — Parkway girls' basketball team has been on fire and senior Dakota Howard is a big reason for the Lady Panthers success. 'I knew I had a big part to play on this team this year,' Howard said. After the Parkway girls' basketball team won the state championship last season, for the second consecutive year, Dakota Howard knew she was next up to lead the Lady Panthers. Dakota Howard's 28 points leads Parkway to win over Airline The senior has followed behind star players like Mikaylah Williams and Chloe Larry, so she knew what was expected as a role model and leader for Parkway. 'My team has my back just as much as I have their back,' explained Howard. 'I know they look up to me, and it's a great feeling to have people look up to you at a young age.' Basketball wasn't always Howard's main sport; she originally was focused on softball. However, starting her eighth-grade year. basketball became her number one sport as she realized what kind of a future she could have on the hardwood. 'I don't know if I was getting looked at for softball,' recalled Howard. 'I knew I wanted to go to college and play ball. So, when my first year of basketball people are looking, calling, or talking to me, I was like, 'This is what I need to be doing if this is where I want to go.'' Ava Moore shining for Benton girls' soccer; named Player of the Week One of the best decisions Howard feels that she has made was transferring to Parkway her sophomore year. 'The program, the teachers, the students, everybody is family,' expressed Howard. Dakota is no stranger to Hammond, last year she played in the state title which was hosted there. After this May, the senior is heading back to Hammond, but this time as a Southeastern Louisiana Lion. 'Ever since the first time I talked to (Southeastern Women's Basketball),' Howard said. 'They've been like family. They have always called or told me congratulations on anything I've achieved in my career. They've really just been here this entire time.' THE LATEST — High School Sports News Howard will now be eligible for the Landers Dodge Player of the Year award, which comes with a $2,500 scholarship.
