Lainie Douglas: Coming of Age

SPRINGFIELD–Lainie Douglas has quickly blossomed from a quiet freshman into a key contributor for the Lady Bears, this season. What's up Bear Nation?! Not all first-year players are created equal. Some make in immediate statement, while some take time to grow and mature. Lainie Douglas is in the latter category, but the timing couldn't be any better for Missouri State. 'Oh, like you're a freshman?! Like it's a start, but I try not to use that as an excuse,' said Lady Bears freshman center Lainie Douglas. For the first half of this season, Lainie Douglas was still trying to figure out her role in Missouri State's rotation. The 6'3 freshman showed promise, but wasn't taking advantage of her size and skills. 'Coach told me like, I want you to play with more of a motor,' said Douglas. 'So, I was like I need to play faster and stronger. Obviously it's a big jump from high school with the strength and how fast people are.' Since that suggestion, Douglas became a wrecking ball in the post. Exploding for 10 or more points in six of the Lady Bears last seven games. 'I was just ready to turn it on,' Douglas said. 'I felt like I wasn't meeting where I should be, especially for my team. So, I think I was like I really need to turn it on for the Drake game, that's when I was like I need to step it up.' She tallied her first double digit outing in the win against the Bulldogs, but games later, Douglas posted a career-best. 'Having my team behind me, I know that they helped me get the 20 points because they have to pass it in to me, so I mean, it was both my team and me,' said Douglas. 'Getting the opportunity to start I was just excited.' Her new found confidence and contributioins have MSU sitting atop the Missouri Valley Conference standings, but that doesn't surprise her head coach. 'She's come out and she's really competed and gotten after it,' Lady Bears Head Coach Beth Cunningham. 'And she's put herself in a position where, I think she's playing her best basketball, probably of her career.' With Douglas coming of age, less than a month before the conference tournament, perhaps this could be the year the Lady Bears take the crown, and return to the NCAA Tournament. Stokes back on the floor, credits MSU trainers

SPRINGFIELD, Mo–The Missouri Valley named Lady Bears forward Lainie Douglas it's Freshman of the Week again. This is the third straight week that Douglas has earned the honor. The Overland Park, KS product scored 17 points in Sunday's 86-57 win over Evansville. In our Bear Nation report, MoState is also perfect at home–11-0 at Great Southern Bank Arena. Another piece of good news, senior guard Lacy Stokes started and played without any problems with an injured foot. It bothered her Friday night, but she credits the Bears training staff for getting her on the floor. 'We have a great team here at Missouri State that really takes care of our athletes. And makes us a priority when things like this happens. When stuff does happen it gives you a peace of mind that we're going to get it figured out as soon as possible. They were amazing that they got me back on the court today,' said Stokes. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Lady Bears Rocca past Sycamores 76-61

SPRINGFIELD, Mo–The Missouri State Lady Bears Rocca and rolled their way back into the win column. And in doing so, Beth Cunningham's crew remains perfect on the Great Southern Bank Arena hardwood. The Lady Bears beat Indiana State and are 10-0 at home in conference games. No other team in the Valley has done that this season. In our Bear Nation report, Sarah Linthacum did not play because of a concussion. So the Valley freshman of the week Lainie Douglas getting the start and scoring the first basket of the game. That set the tone for the night. Douglas again slashing inside, splits the double team and gets the hoop, she scored Missouri State's first nine points of the game. Second quarter Indiana State catches the Lady Bears, Saige Stahl with the board and the bucket, it's 30-30. But MoState regains the mo-mentum, Paige Rocca with the three pointer 35-30. The Lady Bears led by five at the half. Third quarter, more Rocca, a catch and shoot three, it's 39-32 Missouri State. The fifth year senior, Rocca, and the true freshman Lainie Douglas were unstoppable. Douglas with the hoop here, two of her career high 20 points. And then Rocca with the steal, the layup, and the foul, she led the Lady Bears with 21. And Missouri State wins 76-61. 'I knew coming in to it the league was gonna be very physical, so just preparing for that, we prepare for it in practice as well. So, Just knowing that I have to come out strong and be aggressive,' said Douglas. 'It comes down to trust in each other and the confidence we have in each other. It's something we've alked about and built since the summer, trusting each other, having confidence and finding a way to win,' said Rocca. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
