Border Czar's 'Irrelevant' Assertion that Abrego Garcia 'Got More Due Process Than Laken Riley' Baffles Users: 'Her Killer Was Convicted'
Border Czar Tom Homan was criticized for claiming Kilmar Abrego Garcia received due process during an interview Wednesday. Border Czar Tom Homan baffled users when he argued that Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland man who made headlines for being wrongly deported, "got more due process than Laken Riley." Homan claimed Wednesday that he does not think a U.S. court "can order another nation, a sovereign nation" to return a citizen who is in their custody. He conceded, however, that he is not an attorney and he will "let DoJ argue this in court" before he doubled down on Abrego Garcia's unlawful detention at the Terrorism Confinement Center in El Salvador. "What I think is we removed a public safety threat, gang member, designated terrorist from the United States who had been ordered deported twice by a federal judge," Homan stated. "I think he got plenty due process. He got more due process than Laken Riley got." A Maryland police officer claimed in 2019 that Abrego Garcia was affiliated with the MS-13 gang, which the Trump administration designated a terrorist organization in February, weeks before they began deporting undocumented immigrants to El Salvador. That officer was later indicted for giving confidential information about a case to a sex worker, as reported by The New Republic. Abrego Garcia and his attorneys have adamantly denied any affiliation with the gang. Social media users criticized Homan for suggesting Abrego Garcia received any due process before he was illegally deported, along with nearly 250 migrants, on March 15. "Laken Riley wasn't being processed and this useless whataboutism shouldn't be an acceptable answer," one X user wrote. Abrego García had nothing to do with that," another X user wrote. "But.... he literally got NO due process at all? Also, how does a victim get due process? What the fuck does this even mean? It's pure rage bait using the tragedy of that poor woman," one user wrote, adding, "Grandpa needs to go to the retirement home." But.... he literally got NO due process at all? Not even remotely close," one X user commented. On Tuesday, in a response to a judge ordering Abrego Garcia's return, the Trump administration said it was engaged in "appropriate diplomatic discussions" with El Salvador in regard to Abrego Garcia's detention without offering any further clarification or insight, per the Washington Post. Opinion - All the Justice Department needed was a new attorney general
For four years, Democrats and the mainstream media insisted there was only one way to prevent the horrific murders of American citizens like Laken Riley and Jocelyn Nungaray at the hands of illegal immigrants: Pass new legislation. Not only was this astoundingly tone-deaf, it was also verifiably false. The laws we need to stem the tide of dangerous cartels and gang members like Tren De Aragua and MS-13 from entering our country have been on the books for decades. The truth is that Joe Biden and Merrick Garland always had the executive tools at their disposal to enforce our borders but shamefully refused to use them. As President Trump said in his joint address to Congress: 'It turned out that all we really needed was a new president' to enforce the laws as written. His first two and a half months as president have made this abundantly clear. It also turns out that all the Department of Justice needed was a new attorney general, at the president's side, fully committed to pursuing justice and prosecuting criminals over vindictive lawfare and villainizing law enforcement. All the department needed was someone committed to hunting down violent criminals, arresting them and putting them behind bars with punishments appropriately severe for their crimes. That new attorney general is my friend Pam Bondi, and she is rising to the occasion. Since her swearing in on Feb. 5, Bondi has delivered more results in two months than Garland achieved his entire tenure as attorney general. It's a testament to what heights can be reached when the leading law enforcement officer in the country has the will and resolve to create a safer nation for the American people. As a stalwart supporter of the president and his agenda for many years now, Bondi has a long career of defending the Constitution and putting America first, especially when it comes to standing up for America's borders. On March 27, Bondi, along with state and federal partners, executed a pre-dawn raid that resulted in the arrest of a suspected top MS-13 leader in the country — just miles outside the nation's capital in Virginia. Last week, the Justice Department announced the charges and convictions of multiple suspected MS-13 members in a gruesome murder in South Florida. Initially opened in 2015, this investigation is finally being closed thanks to her leadership and fierce tenacity. And earlier this year, a Colorado nightclub was successfully raided, where dozens of alleged Tren De Aragua members were arrested for trafficking drugs and weapons. Her crusade against these cartels doesn't end there. On April 2, a suspected high-ranking leader of MS-13 was arrested in Long Island for his alleged role in a conspiracy responsible for 11 murders. In South Texas, multiple alleged Tren De Aragua members were arrested and charged with international drug distribution of over five kilograms of cocaine into the United States. And plans have been announced to extradite three additional suspected gang members to Chile where they are currently wanted for violent crimes. Additionally, under Bondi's watch, 1,573 kilograms of fentanyl, 36,861 kilograms of cocaine, and 5,918 kilograms of methamphetamine have already been seized. Thousands of illegal firearms have been taken off the streets. Human trafficking has plummeted. Violent left-wing attacks meant to terrorize Tesla owners are being prosecuted swiftly. And those individuals terrorizing pro-life pregnancy resource centers will be and are being held accountable. It is a breath of fresh air for the public to have an attorney general committed to eradicating terrorism on our soil. The contrast between her goals and achievements and Garland's could not be more stark. For the past four years, under the failed leadership of Garland, the Biden Justice Department has been unjustly weaponized against its political opponents. A once respected agency, the Justice Department went after parents who exercised their First Amendment rights at school board meetings under the auspices of the Patriot Act. Not to mention, the agency has also intimidated and levied charges against Catholics for simply practicing their faith. And of course, Garland's Justice Department and FBI directly targeted President Trump and his family. Garland gave special counsel Jack Smith free rein to harass and intimidate Trump and his family by whatever means were necessary. The American public also witnessed an FBI raid on Trump's home — signed off on at the highest levels of the Justice Department. At a time when trust in our institutions is at a record low, these cynical and overtly political actions by the Biden administration only undermined the American people's faith in their government, a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. While Garland was preoccupied with weaponizing the justice system against the administration's political opponents, he neglected to address threats directly jeopardizing the safety and security of the American people. Our borders were overrun by millions of illegal immigrants. Violent crime and human trafficking skyrocketed. Cartels flooded our communities with dangerous drugs like fentanyl — taking far too many precious lives far too soon. Garland turned a blind eye to all of it. America was no longer safe or secure as a result. Americans were left questioning the integrity of the Justice Department for allowing foreign terrorists to harm innocent civilians, while parents, pro-lifers and Catholics were treated like domestic terrorists. This is why the American people chose President Trump last November, to reorient our justice system. We made a much needed pivot from vengeance to justice. By selecting Bondi as his attorney general, Trump delivered on his promise to protect the safety and security of the American people. Like I said when I introduced her to the Senate Judiciary Committee, Trump's selection of Bondi as U.S. attorney general was a home run. Not only has she been a crucial piece of Trump's reform agenda but also she has wasted no time delivering on that agenda. A safer America is here, and Attorney General Bondi and the Department of Justice are only getting started. Eric Schmitt is the junior senator from Missouri. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Opinion - How many dead Americans will it take for Democrats to start caring?
Democrats are like that guy running the three-card Monte game in Times Square at 3:00 a.m.. They talk non-stop for the express purpose of distracting whatever sucker plunked down $20 to 'find the red queen.' The subject of the talking doesn't matter, only the distraction it creates. 'Hey, check out that guy's shoes!' That keeps the scam going. That's how Democrats are when it comes to illegal immigration — talking non-stop without ever saying anything, in the hope that no one will notice that every single American murdered by an illegal alien would be alive today had the immigration laws just been enforced as written. Laken Riley, for example, would still be alive. So would Kate Steinle, Rachel Morin, and every single other American murdered by illegal aliens. Morin's killer, 24-year-old rapist Victor Martinez-Hernandez, was convicted Monday of murdering and raping her. The illegal immigrant from El Salvador will spend the rest of his life in prison, and Rachel's family will spend the rest of their lives missing her, only because Democrats allowed in all comers who marched across the U.S.-Mexico border in 2022. Democrats insist that immigrant commit fewer crimes than Americans do, as if that would comfort victims' families. But there are two truths they refuse to confront. The first is that using immigration law to keep out killers prevents every single murder they would otherwise commit. Every crime by any illegal immigrant is easily preventable without having to write new laws or even violate anyone's rights. The other truth they won't confront is that we have no idea whether immigrants (or illegal immigrants) commit more crimes or not, and it's because the Biden administration and state-level Democrats have not allowed the collection of the data we would need to prove or disprove the claim. How many illegal immigrants are convicted of crimes against Americans every year? We don't know. It's only reported on a case-by-case basis, and then only if the story is reported in the media. There is very limited data on 'non-citizens,' but that deliberately confuses legal and illegal immigrants. This is a very important distinction, since the first Trump administration actually started to break out the data and found that 94 percent of immigrants in federal prisons are illegal immigrants. Biden discontinued this recordkeeping, naturally, because we would hate to get an actual answer. Last September, Reuters ran a 'fact-check' titled, 'No evidence 4,000 people are killed yearly by undocumented immigrants.' In the story, the news service declared, 'There is no nationwide data on crimes committed specifically by undocumented immigrants, but research shows they do not commit crimes at a higher rate than native-born Americans.' Reuters made these two contradictory claims — there is 'no evidence' and yet 'research shows' — in order to distract from the fact that there would be zero illegal alien crime-victims if the offenders were simply excluded from the country. And yes, surprise, surprise, research by open-borders activist groups fighting to keep illegal aliens in the country shows exactly what they want it to show. Alex Nowrasteh of the Cato Institute, a libertarian organization that advocates for open borders, declared 'I've seen zero evidence for illegal immigrants killing 4,000 people a year. I've never seen that number defended by anybody spreading it.' Once again, here we have a claim that only raises uncertainty, not a rebuttal. And again, it merely distracts from the real issue: One hundred percent of Americans murdered by illegal immigrants would still be alive if the aliens had not been allowed to enter and live illegally in our country in the first place. Thanks to the Biden administration and Democrats' deliberate sabotage of our immigration enforcement, some large number of Americans have been murdered, many American women raped, many American children abused, many Americans injured or killed in accidents caused by unlicensed or drunk drivers who were illegal immigrants. Not a single one of these victims would have have suffered this fate if Biden had not deliberately let in their victimizers. But even then, at least some of these crimes could have been prevented anyway, if not for Democratic sanctuary city laws, which protected criminals from deportation even when they had earlier run-ins with police. In the case of Morin, Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) released a statement after her murder, saying, 'My heart breaks for the Morin family.' I can find no evidence he met with Morin's family or even tried to. Yet in the case of illegal immigrant Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran man previously ordered removed from the U.S. — a man whom U.S. authorities say is a gang member — Van Hollen is planning to travel to El Salvador to see how he is doing and demand his return to the U.S. This invites the most fundamental question: Is there any number of Americans dead, injured, or otherwise victimized at the hands of illegal aliens that will make Democrats start caring? I don't see any evidence for it. Derek Hunter is host of the Derek Hunter Podcast and a former staffer for the late Sen. Conrad Burns (R-Mont.). Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
