Five flights diverted toVaranasi due to storm in Delhi

Varanasi: At least five flights, including one international, were diverted to Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Varanasi due to inclement weather in Delhi late Saturday. Airport director Puneet Gupta said on Sunday, "Four Delhi-bound IndiGo flights and one of Air India were diverted to Varanasi due to bad weather in the national capital." Initially, AIC2703 A20N Kolkata-Delhi was allowed to land, after which four more flights, including IGO2007 A21N Mumbai-Delhi, IGO16M A20N Dubai-Delhi, and IGO6072 A21N Calicut-Delhi, landed here. All these landings took place after 2 am, and their departure was allowed after over a one-hour stay. The airport and airline officials and staff remained busy making necessary arrangements for the comfortable stay of passengers. Delhi witnessed a powerful spell of heavy rain and thunderstorms on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, which brought air traffic to a temporary halt at the Indira Gandhi International Airport. It resulted in the diversion of around 49 flights, including 17 international, from Delhi. tnn

DCP Gomati Zone Akash Patel said Nishanth claimed to have a bomb in his bag when the flight was in the process of taking off. The pilot immediately alerted the Air Traffic Control (ATC) and the aircraft was moved to the isolation bay after safely disembarking all the passengers. After intensive checking by BDS and CISF personnel for five hours, no explosive material was found. The Canada high commission has been informed about the incident. Phoolpur police station inspector Pravin Kumar said the individual from Canada appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. IndiGo Airlines flight 6E-499 was positioned for departure at 10:24 pm, already experiencing a delay from its original schedule of 9:55 pm on Saturday. The preliminary enquiry conducted by police and CISF security staff revealed that whilst the aircraft was moving from the apron to the runway, Yohanathan had shifted from his allocated seat. When cabin crew instructed him to return to his designated seat, he became agitated. Subsequently, he started making alarming declarations about carrying explosives in his baggage and also started shouting religious slogans. All the passengers spent the night in the terminal building. After receiving clearance from security agencies, the aircraft departed for Bengaluru at 7 am on Sunday, officials said.

Canadian arrested for hoax bomb threat, delays Bengaluru flight at Varanasi airport

Representative photo VARANASI: A Canadian national was arrested by Phoolpur police on Sunday morning after he claimed that a bomb was kept in luggage being taken on a Bangalore flight on Saturday night. The flight was taken back to the apron of Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport from the runway and was checked for several hours by CISF and the bomb disposal squad before it was allowed to depart on Sunday morning. Inspector Phoolpur Pravin Kumar said on Sunday that the Canadian citizen, who was seemingly in an inebriated state, was arrested while the Indigo flight departed in the morning after proper checking by the BDS. The flight, which was scheduled to depart at 9.55 pm on Saturday, had reached the runway for takeoff when the Canadian traveller on board raised a false alarm. It compelled the flight staff to alert airlines and airport officials before bringing the plane back to the runway. By then, CISF personnel and the BDS had swung into action. All the passengers were brought to the terminal building to complete the checking process. After completing the frisking exercise, the alarm proved to be false. The CISF caught the Canadian who raised the fake alarm and handed him over to Phoolpur police. The flight was allowed to depart for Bangalore after 7 am.
