Ganesh Chaturthi organisers ‘scale' new heights with their idols
Bhubaneswar: With Ganesh Chaturthi around the corner, many clubs and puja committees in the city are gearing up to install towering idols of Lord Ganesha, some reaching as high as 60 feet, promising a grand visual spectacle for devotees and visitors. Preparations for Ganesh Chaturthi, scheduled to be celebrated from Aug 27, are in the final stages, in more than 100 community puja mandaps. Besides, the festival is also celebrated in educational institutes, clubs and youth associations. Bright Star Youth Association in Bargada area is constructing a clay idol reaching 61ft, inspired by Mumbai's 'Lalbaugcha Raja', and a laddu weighing 61kg. Besides, the organisers will also make silver feet for the idol and a silver mouse. "We want to make this year's festival special for everyone. We have been organising Ganesh Utsav since 1985. Starting from a 5-ft-high idol, it has reached 61ft, making the festival grander," said Sangram Martha, secretary of the association. Shree Shree Akhandalamani Seva Sansad in Nuasahi is claiming to construct the tallest idol in the city. "Last year we constructed a 56-ft-high idol, and this year our idol will be the tallest in the city. We want to give a message on women's safety and road safety through our pandal and decorations," said Debabrata Mohanty, a member of the organising committee. Another major crowd-puller is Winner's Club in Saheed Nagar, which is giving the message of protecting elephants by constructing a 46-ft-high Ganesh idol sitting on a chariot pulled by elephants. "We want to create awareness on saving elephants and celebrating an eco-friendly Ganesh Utsav. We are not using any chemical colours for idols. After the puja, we are planning to dismantle the idol and plant at least 200 saplings in the clay used for the idol," said V Santosh Kumar Rao, secretary of the club. Similarly, Tarang Club at Tinimundia Square in Old Town is coming up with a 50-ft-high idol this year. Most of the organisers will conduct cultural programmes and distribute prasad for seven days of the festival. Commissionerate police is making elaborate arrangements to manage the crowds. Special traffic guidelines, parking zones and additional police deployment have been arranged to ensure a safe festival in Cuttack, Bhubaneswar and Jatni, police sources said. People worship Lord Ganesha who appeared as an elephant-headed deity during this festival while also serving as the deity of new initiatives and obstacle remover. The festivities of Ganesh Chaturthi shine brightly in Mumbai through impressive parades which display impressive pandals alongside strong spiritual devotion. Mumbaikars can find the best experience of Ganesh Chaturthi processions by visiting these recommended locations in Mumbai. 1. Lalbaugcha Raja Every year Lalbaugcha Raja evolves as Mumbai's most revered Ganesh idol which hosts millions of devotees during the pilgrimage. This pandal originally established itself in 1934 in Lalbaug where it serves as a prominent symbol of religious devotion in a working-class district. Worshippers recognize the traditional appearance and skilled workmanship of this temple. During the last day of the festival the crowd follows Lalbaugcha Raja's Ganesh statue from its pavilion at Lalbaug towards the Girgaum Chowpatty immersion destination. Devotees numbering in thousands participate in the procession where they sing 'Ganpati Bappa Morya' which generates an exciting environment. Devotees can easily watch the celebrations as the road route navigates through Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Road and Parel. 2. Siddhivinayak Temple, Prabhadevi Visitors must see the Siddhivinayak Temple throughout Ganesh Chaturthi although it is not part of the street processions. Raja Ganesha Temple draws enormous crowds of worshipers during festival times because it is committed to the worship of Lord Ganesha. Special religious ceremonies and rituals which the temple leadership organizes run through all ten days of the celebration period The temple vicinity includes residential areas that welcome local community groups who operate their own Ganesh Chaturthi festivities. Many processions finish their journey by ending up at points where idols are submerged into the Arabian Sea coastline. 3. Ganesh Galli, Girgaum The bustling area of Girgaum houses Ganesh Galli which attracts numerous Ganesh Chaturthi holidaymakers. The narrow street contains multiple well-known mandals that strive to design superior pandals and idols. Among all Ganesha statues celebrating mandals, Khetwadi Ganraj Mandal stands out because of its environmentally responsible practices and unconventional decorations. Throughout Ganesh Galli the main Ganesh festival processions lead towards the South Mumbai immersion area of Girgaum Chowpatty. The procession routes in crowded streets enable observers to witness firsthand how the city's cultural strength weaves itself together. 4. Andheri Cha Raja Locals in the western Andheri suburb choose Andheri Cha Raja as one of their main locations to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi. Thousands of city residents flock to this revered pandal because of its enormous idol alongside its magnificent decorations. The last day's procession begins with SV Road and continues through Juhu Link Road on its journey to Juhu Beach where the idols are submerged. The primary distinction of Andheri Cha Raja occurs through its dedication to social participation and community purposes. Mandals apply the event to spread knowledge on environmental stewardship and educational matters. 5. Dadar Cha Raja People flock to Dadar Cha Raja in the Shivaji Park area because it stands as an eminent destination for Ganesh Chaturthi festivities. The pandal in this area becomes famous yearly for its artistic exhibitions and new theme-based setups. The pandals present themes related to contemporary social matters and mythological narratives which deliver visual brilliance and intellectual depth. Those attending the Dadar Cha Raja procession stroll alongside Senapati Bapat Marg toward Girgaum Chowpatty where the immersion takes place while listening to the traditional dhol-tasha drumming mixed with community spirit. 6. Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) Area During Ganesh Chaturthi many different mandals located throughout the LTT area extend their full enthusiasm to participating in celebrations. The Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal distinguishes itself through excellent planning and impressive grandeur among the other festivities. Mandals in this area use busy LBS Marg as their procession route while people watch from multiple observation points during the festival. Residents from multiple communities unite during the festival in this region to show their devotion. Ganesh Chaturthi creates a welcoming atmosphere that demonstrates the fest's open nature. 7. Powai Lake Immersion Point Many suburban mandals choose Powai Lake as their immersion location while offering an atmosphere of peace to their followers. The festive conclusion takes place at Powai which has a more tranquil atmosphere than both Girgaum Chowpatty and Juhu Beach. Visitors appreciate seeing the immersion rituals in Powai Lake because its peaceful waters create stunning scenery for the celebrations. Tips for Visitors Attend during evening hours when most celebrations through the city parades take place during the final day of the festival. The peak time rush on public transportation causes delays so you should either use ridesharing platforms or walk instead. Large crowds assemble at the busy areas of Lalbaug and Girgaum Chowpatty making them extremely congested. You should arrive early to find an ideal spot for viewing. The necessity for safety includes both keeping valuables safe and drinking enough water while spending long periods outdoors. Mumbai's Iconic Lalbaugcha Raja: A Look Into Its 92-Year-Old Legacy
1/10 Located in Putlabai Chawl, Lalbaugcha Raja or 'King of Lalbaug' is the most visited Ganesh mandal in India's financial capital. (Image: Instagram) While we wait for its first look this year, the Ganesh Muhurata Puja - performed by President Balasaheb Sudam Kamble at the workshop of Murtikar Shree Kambli Arts, gave a glimpse of the revered idol this year. (Image: Instagram) The history of Lalbaug dates back to the early 1900s, when the Parel area was predominantly characterized by its bustling textile mills. As industrialization surged in the 1930s, these mills faced significant upheavals, which had a profound impact on both the local community and their livelihood. (Image: Instagram) According to local legend, during a period of upheaval, fishermen and traders in the area turned to their beloved deity, Lord Ganesha, seeking assistance. In response to their prayers, they were gifted a plot of land that now forms the bustling Lalbaug market. The community viewed this gift as a divine blessing from Ganesha. (Image: Instagram) Thus, the Lalbaugcha Raja Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal was established on this site, where the Ganesh idol is installed each year. The idol is adorned in various attires and celebrated as a king during the festival. (Image: Instagram) Over the years, the scale and grandeur of these celebrations have expanded significantly. (Image: Instagram) This year, the much-loved festivities and rituals will begin on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, with the Madhyahna Ganesha Puja Muhurat, which will last from 11:05 AM to 1:40 PM. Meanwhile, the Ganesh Visarjan is set for Saturday, September 6, 2025.
