Season likely over: Surgery an option for hamstrung Tigers young gun
Sam Lalor may need surgery after suffering a second hamstring injury for the season in the opening minutes of his comeback game against Geelong on Saturday. Playing in his first match since May 23, when he strained his hamstring against Essendon in round 12, the 18-year-old injured the hamstring again in the opening minutes of Saturday's match. The Tigers are not expected to know the recovery program until Monday when the full extent of the injury is revealed, but it is unlikely Lalor will play again in 2025. The No.1 draft pick showed his prodigious talent in his first 10 matches, but repeat hamstring injuries means the Tigers will need to undertake a rigorous assessment of the issue to ensure the problem is solved before he appears next. Loading Coach Adem Yze said Lalor's injury flattened teammates and coaches, but the club would support him through the disappointment. 'I think the mechanism's something that it's hard to train. So yeah, it looks like a bad one, which is really disappointing,' Yze said. 'We've got to help him through that. We don't want this to happen again. We want him to have a long career without these little hiccups.' Jacob Bauer suffered a suspected ACL injury in the VFL on Sunday in Geelong to top off a bad weekend on the injury front for Richmond.

He cut a dejected figure as he slowly limped from the field. 'Looks a bad one, the way he is walking,' commentator Jason Dunstall said. 'Just a disaster. 'Saddest part about that is we want to see the young stars in action. 'A young man that has so much to offer the game and unfortunately for him, it's going to be another stint on the sidelines.' The Tigers wasted no time in subbing out Lalor and activating Maurice Rioli jnr. Lalor, the No.1 pick in last year's draft, made a hot start to his career with a brilliant two-goal debut that inspired the Tigers to an unlikely victory over Carlton. He kicked 11 goals in his first 10 matches and impressed with his clean hands and composure with ball in hand. But he suffered a hamstring injury in the Dreamtime at the 'G clash against Essendon in Round 11. Lalor missed the next six weeks with the club taking a cautious approach with his recovery.

Australia cricketer Usman Khawaja boycotts radio station that sacked pro-Gaza journalist
Prominent Australian cricketer Usman Khawaja has boycotted sports radio station SEN after it sacked journalist Peter Lalor for his outspoken support of Palestinian human rights. Khawaja refused an interview with SEN after the first day of Australia's first test match against the West Indies in Barbados. He was seen approaching two SEN broadcasters off the field of play, before spotting the SEN branding on their microphone, raising a hand at them and walking away. Khawaja, who has been an Australian international cricketer since 2011, has regularly criticised Israel's war on Gaza in public. In February, Lalor's freelance job with SEN's cricket commentary team was cancelled after station chief Craig Hutchison claimed his pro-Palestinian social media posts were distressing to Jewish Australians. New MEE newsletter: Jerusalem Dispatch Sign up to get the latest insights and analysis on Israel-Palestine, alongside Turkey Unpacked and other MEE newsletters After he was sacked, Lalor said: "I have friends who are frightened and have heard the fear in their voices during conversations. "It is an awful situation. But so is Gaza." Khawaja criticised the decision at the time, saying: "Standing up for the people of Gaza is not antisemitic, nor does it have anything to do with my Jewish brothers and sisters in Australia, but everything to do with the Israeli government and their deplorable actions. Khawaja has not commented on why he declined an interview with SEN. Lalor said: "Usman is a man of principle whose support I valued greatly when I was dismissed and whose ongoing support I appreciate." In December 2023, during a training session, Khawaja was seen with the phrases "Freedom is a human right" and "All lives are equal" written on his boots in the colours of the Palestinian flag. "The ICC [International Cricket Council] have told me I can't wear my shoes on the field because they believe it's a political statement under their guidelines," Khawaja said at the time. "I don't believe in this though. It's a humanitarian appeal. I will respect their view and decision, but I will fight it and seek to get an approval. "Freedom is a human right."
