Footy champ Brendan Fevola announces shock career move with starring role in feature film

Famed Australian footy star Brendan Fevola is set to make his movie debut. The former AFL champ, 44, will step before the cameras on Tuesday for the new Australian feature film Yesterday's Hero. Produced by Victorian filmmaker Cameron Miller the 1980s set film follows the rise to fame of an labourer who launches a career as a comedian. No details about Brendan's role have emerged, however the Herald Sun reported on Monday that the fan favourite will be sharing scenes with another former AFL great Warwick Capper. The publication said that the pair will travel to Melbourne 's Lalor Football Club to shoot their big screen moment. The cast also includes US actor Corey Feldman and former Neighbours actor Krista Vendy and comedian Chris Franklin. Yesterday's Hero is being made as a tribute to Miller's son, Shaun who died in 2012 from congenital heart disease (CHD), twelve years after the filmmaker started shooting the the film. Miller later founded the Shaun Miller Foundation for CHD sufferers. It comes after Brendan shocked his Fox FM co-stars in march when he revealed he would be stepping away from the program. The celebrity footy star told listeners he would be competing on the upcoming season of Channel Ten 's The Amazing Race and would be absent for some time. 'I'm leaving the show... not for good, though,' he began. 'I got an opportunity last year to do something with my 18-year-old daughter Leni - to travel the world on the TV show The Amazing Race! So, I won't be on the show as of Monday.' Co-host Fifi Box then wished Brendan all the best and asked if he had any idea when he would be returning. 'I could be away for a couple of days, a couple of weeks, depends on when I get eliminated... I am not worried about the race, I am worried about whether Leni and I punch on or not. That could be our elimination,' he joked. Brendan has co-hosted the top-rating Fox Melbourne breakfast show since April 2016. In October, Brendan teased fans about a massive career change. The Carlton Football club legend said he was itching to get back into footy as a coach. His shock announcement came after he spent a day training with Collingwood's AFLW team. 'It makes me wanna be a coach,' an emotional Fevola told his co-hosts Fifi Box and Nick Cody at the time 'You wouldn't understand how much I loved it,' he said. 'I was up and about all day yesterday. I haven't trained for any of the teams I've played for in the last 14 years, not once.' Fevola, who rose to fame as a top goal kicker for the Carlton Football Club's AFL premier side in the early 2000s, said he was originally asked along to the training session by Collingwood CEO Craig Kelly. Rookie has ‘similar traits' to Tiger legend

Richmond coach Adem Yze sees the parallels between No.1 pick Sam Lalor and champion Dustin Martin in that the Tigers 'almost need two of him'. Lalor was the round 1 Rising Star nomination for his 18-disposal, two-goal performance against Carlton last Thursday night. While he was drafted as a star midfielder, Lalor spent the majority of his debut playing as a forward. Yze originally planned on protecting Lalor from the 'crash and bash' of the midfield after his pre-season jaw injury before he proved a valuable asset inside 50. 'We'll grow that part of his game (midfield), the pre-season he had he trained as a midfielder, he's done a bit of forward craft,' he said. 'We just thought we'd get him out of the crash and bash early with his jaw and get him feeling like he's belonging on an AFL field. 'Then in the second half you would've seen a bit more exposure as a midfielder and we'll just start to grow those parts of his game. 'We almost need two of him, similar to Dusty, the talent he's got in the front end and then obviously the impact he can have as a midfielder.' Yze wants to hold back from mounting further pressure on Lalor but sees the comparison between him and the three-time Norm Smith Medal winner. The Tigers coach is confident the conversation will soon shift from who Lalor is like to who he is. 'I don't want to put that pressure on him but he has similar traits, he will be the best version of Sam Lalor,' Yze said. 'In 10 years' time we will be talking about Sam Lalor for who he is, not who he played like. 'His impact in the front end, air and ground, and then when he goes inside he knows what he's doing and he's a big boy. 'We've just got to temper that and make sure we're not throwing him to the wolves early and manage him through the year.' Part of Yze's management of Lalor and the other top draftees will be a rest at some point of the season. Yze says it will come but not in the immediate future as Richmond looks to build 'consistent AFL footballers'. 'Throughout the year we will look at that, it will be around training load and how many games in a row they've played,' he said. 'There will be those discussions, but we're not at that point right now. We had Seth Campbell last year, he wasn't used to playing so much footy. 'I think it was round 19 we gave him a break. We will look at those things post the bye, but right now we're getting our boys to learn to endure, play week to week and be consistent AFL footballers.'

Tigers won't throw Dusty-like Lalor to the wolves

Richmond coach Adem Yze can't help but see the similarities between Sam Lalor and Dustin Martin. But Yze is determined not to throw his prized No.1 draft pick to the wolves, and insists Lalor and his Richmond teammates have already steeled themselves for a tough trip to face Port Adelaide. Rising Star nominee Lalor, 18, is the talk of the town after kicking two goals from eight score involvements and 18 disposals in Richmond's stirring upset AFL round one win over Carlton. "We see him every day, and we know the talent that he's got," Yze said. "There's no secret to the fact that he's a good player, and we knew that that was coming. "But the way he's handled that, the way he's handled the week. But once again, you can see a steely resolve that he wants to get over and go and have another great game against Port Adelaide. "He'll test himself against some really good defenders and some really good midfielders. So we'll give him that exposure again." Lalor's impact as both a dynamic forward and midfielder has already drawn comparisons to retired Tigers great Martin. Richmond plan to gradually grow Lalor's midfield minutes after a fractured jaw in pre-season. "We almost need two of him, similar to Dusty, the talent he's got in the front end, and obviously the impact he can have as a midfielder," Yze said. "I don't want to put that pressure on him, but he's got similar traits to Dusty. "He will be the best version of Sam Lalor. And in 10 years' time, we'll be talking about Sam Lalor for who he is, not who he played like. Just the beginning for our Rising Star nominee 🤩 — Richmond FC 🐯 (@Richmond_FC) March 17, 2025 "His impact in the front end is good, air and ground. And then when he goes inside, he knows what he's doing, and he's a big boy. "So we've just got to temper that, make sure we don't throw him to the wolves too early and manage him throughout the year." The Tigers have to replace spearhead Tom Lynch, who is serving a one-match suspension. "We'll look at that today, whether it's like-for-like, or whether we go down a different model," Yze said. "But it's really hard to cover for Lynchy. He's an amazing player and a great leader. "... Someone's going to have to step up and and lead in the front end. We're going to be really young in our front end this week." Richmond are confident they have moved on from round one and are ready for Port Adelaide to come out firing at Adelaide Oval on Saturday after a thumping loss to Collingwood. "I think Carlton were pretty revved up as well," Yze quipped. "So no, it's every week, you're gonna come up against good teams and whether teams are under the pump or not, there's always outside noise. "We can't worry about what they're going through. We've just got a plan, and we've got to go and execute it. So we can't wait."
