Singapore students experience Brunei's culinary traditions

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: A group of 12 Year 5 students from Jurong Primary School in Singapore, accompanied by four teachers, recently visited Brunei as part of a cultural and educational exchange under the School Twinning Programme with Beribi Telanai Primary School.
During the visit, the students were introduced to the traditional techniques of wrapping and preparing Kelupis, Lamban, and Lapat — dishes that hold special cultural significance, particularly among the Kedayan community.
The demonstration, held at the residence of a Kampung Jerudong Village Consultative Council (MPK) member, was organised by the MPK Kampung Jerudong Committee.
The Singaporean delegation was welcomed by Acting Head of Kampung Jerudong 'B' Awang Kamis Panjang, who delivered opening remarks before the group was given a briefing on the day's activities.
Also present were 20 Year 6 students from Beribi Telanai Primary School led by Headmistress Isma Hidayyati Ismail, who served as hosts for the visit.
The cultural activity is part of the second cycle of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two schools, aimed at strengthening educational ties and fostering mutual understanding between Brunei and Singapore.
Isma Hidayyati highlighted that the programme enhances students' knowledge while promoting appreciation of local values and heritage.
'It provides an opportunity for the students to understand our community and culture more deeply,' she said.
Meanwhile, accompanying teacher Jannah Juri expressed her gratitude for the warm hospitality and enriching experience.
'We are thankful for the kind welcome and the hands-on learning opportunities. We hope to see this exchange continue and expand in the future,' she said.
The visit concluded with a tasting session of the prepared local dishes and a presentation of certificates of appreciation to the guests. – Borneo Bulletin/ANN
