Lambani Kasuti attracts renowned fashion institute
VIJAYAPURA: Lambani Kasuti (embroidery), which is being revitalised by the Banjara Kasuti Institute, is now attracting students from the country's renowned fashion design institute, the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Bengaluru. For the past 7-8 years, the institute contacted senior women in Banjara settlements in the district and devised several plans to promote the art and craft that was on the verge of extinction. Now, 38 students from the knitwear designing dept of NIFT, have come to Vijayapura for field study. They are visiting settlements to meet the Banjara women and study Kasuti art. Asha M Patil, the institute's founder, told TOI that the institute is pledged to preserve and promote the embroidery art that has been used by Lambani women for ages. "By selling garments featuring the embroidery art, the institute has become a backbone for Lambani women to achieve self-reliance. Consequently, the institute's name has become well-known through exhibitions and sales across the country," she claimed. NIFT student Sanjali said that they are in the 5th semester of the knitwear design dept. "Under the leadership of their coordinator Sanjeev Bora, we are here to learn new things which will benefit our course and projects in the future. The ongoing discussion and learning about providing better market opportunities for the local women and the curriculum and experiments for the 7th semester. We are also documenting it with videos and pictures," she asserted. Seema Kishor, the institute's co-founder, said only people from Rajasthan and Gujarat were aware of Lambani Kasuti art. "It was hidden in Vijayapura district too. The institute was set in 2017 with goals like improving, preserving, and developing Banjara art. We have showcased and sold at around 18 different fairs so far and participated in the India International Trade Fair 2024. We aim to expand it domestically and internationally, with steps already taken to export to Europe and America. Around 108 women from about 15 tandas in Vijayapura district have joined the institute, sold embroidered garments, and are reviving their fading art with new enthusiasm. We are selling embroidery garments from producers to consumers without profit, and it has led to word-of-mouth promotion and increased demand," she explained. Reshma Rathod, a local artisan, expressed joy that students from Bengaluru are learning their traditional needle embroidery art.

Internal quota: Various parameters of backwardness of each caste to be given weightage
The commission headed by retired judge H.N. Nagamohan Das, which is looking at internal reservation among the 101 Scheduled Castes (SCs) in Karnataka, is expected to recommend classifications taking into consideration the social, economic, educational, and employment backwardness of each caste, and not see them just as broad political groupings as Dalit 'left' (Madiga and allied castes) and Dalit 'right' (Holeya and allied castes). This will be beside giving due weightage to population size and representation. Currently, a similar method has been adopted in the classification of backward classes with castes grouped together as most backward, more backward, and backward categories based on the development indicators of the castes. The commission headed by Mr. Das has been asked to recommend an internal reservation to slice up the 17% reservation (enhanced from the earlier 15%) available for the SCs. Earlier slicing formula Incidentally, when the BJP government in 2022 announced internal reservation ahead of the 2023 Assembly elections, it had provided separate quota for Dalit 'left' and 'right' communities besides Korma, Koracha, and Lambani communities while providing 1% reservation for nomadic communities under the 'others' category based on population. 'Castes that can compete among equal castes in terms of backwardness are expected to be clubbed together. For example, nomadic and semi-nomadic communities, most of which fall in the most backward category, cannot be brought with castes that have moved up the ladder. Backwardness will be the prime mover, though the population size of the communities will also play a major factor. The Supreme Court in its order last year also placed backwardness and adequate representation as the basis for providing internal reservation,' sources in the commission said. 'Telangana, which recently came up with an internal reservation, has also classified castes into three categories based on backwardness. Also, the Constitution does not recognise the Dalit 'left' and Dalit 'right' groupings.' Sources said that of the 101 SCs in Karnataka, 88 castes, including 45 nomadic castes, are classified as micro-communities whose population, according to the 2011 Census, do not even constitute 10% of the total population. 'Their development indicators when compared with major SCs are lower.' The survey work to identify the population and their status in terms of employment, education, ownership of land and houses, political representation and other development indicators that started on May 5 is still under way. After the fourth extension, a new deadline of July 6 has been fixed to end the survey. Classification dilemma Sources said the dilemma over the classification of Adi Karnataka, Adi Andhra, and Adi Dravida is likely to continue despite the commission seeking the original caste names from those being surveyed. 'Many have continued to be associated with these colonial-era nomenclatures, which is currently the reason for confusion. A large number of households continue to hold these certificates, also because they do not know their original caste names,' said a source in the commission. Report by end of July The H.N. Nagamohan Das commission is expected to submit its report and recommendation on internal reservation before the end of July. Sources said the commission is expected to get the final figures of population data by July 7. 'Analysis work on various parameters is already under way, and by July third week the report is likely to be ready for submission. The data on the government employees to ascertain representation has also been received as well as from the State-run educational institutions,' said the source in the commission. Of the 1.16 crore projected population of SCs in the State, the survey has identified 1.07 crore or about 92%. Though the survey has progressed well across the State, it is lagging in Bengaluru where just about 52% or about 7.04 lakh population of the projected population of 13.62 lakh has been covered to far.

Karnataka BJP leader booked for video calling for Muslims' extermination
A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader from Karnataka has been booked for controversial remarks he made about the Muslim community in a video posted on a social media platform, police said on Sunday. In the video shared on Rathod's Facebook account on Saturday, the BJP leader is purportedly heard making inflammatory remarks in the Lambani language, calling for the extermination of the Muslim community and urging the killing of those accused of 'love jihad' within eight days. Karnataka BJP leader booked over video calling for murder of Muslims
Bidar: A case has been registered against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Manikanta Narendra Rathod, 30, after a provocative video he posted on Facebook went viral, triggering public outrage and raising serious concerns over communal harmony in the Kalaburagi district, police said. In the video, Rathod is purportedly heard making inflammatory remarks in the Lambani language, allegedly calling for the complete extermination of the Muslim community and urging the killing of those accused of 'Love Jihad' within eight days. He further claimed that if the police were held back for just 15 minutes in Kalaburagi, a massacre of Muslims could be carried out. The video sparked intense backlash on social media, with civil society groups, political leaders, and concerned citizens demanding Rathod's immediate arrest. A complaint in this regard was lodged on Saturday by Syed Aleem Ilahi, 34, following which an FIR was registered at the Central Police Station (CEN Station). Kalaburagi Commissioner of Police Sharanappa S D said: 'Rathod allegedly uploaded a provocative video on Facebook. This incident comes shortly after another case was filed against Rathod on May 26, 2025, at Chittapur Police Station, for derogatory comments made against Karnataka minister Priyank Kharge. That complaint was filed by Hanumanth Soman, 49, a Congress party worker, who accused Rathod of making remarks aimed at disturbing public peace. Rathod, a former BJP candidate from Chittapur constituency, had contested the previous Assembly elections but was defeated by Congress leader Priyank Kharge. Legal proceedings have now been initiated under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 196(1), (2), 197(1), (2), 299, 351(3), 353(2), and 2.2.
