Karnataka BJP leader booked for video calling for Muslims' extermination

A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader from Karnataka has been booked for controversial remarks he made about the Muslim community in a video posted on a social media platform, police said on Sunday. In the video shared on Rathod's Facebook account on Saturday, the BJP leader is purportedly heard making inflammatory remarks in the Lambani language, calling for the extermination of the Muslim community and urging the killing of those accused of 'love jihad' within eight days. HT has verified the authenticity of the video. The term 'love jihad' is used by Hindu right-wing outfits and are not recognised by the government or courts, with the terms often seen as 'anti-Muslim' rhetoric. A complaint over the video was filed by one Syed Aleem Ilahi at the Kalaburage Central police station on Saturday. Based on the complaint, a first information report was registered under 196 (promoting enmity between different groups), 197 (imputations, assertions prejudicial to national integration), 299 (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class), 351(criminal intimidation) and other relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Confirming the development Kalaburagi commissioner of police Sharanappa SD said: 'Rathod allegedly uploaded a provocative video on Facebook. We are investigating the matter and gathering evidence to determine the extent of his culpability.'

Karnataka BJP leader booked over video calling for murder of Muslims

Bidar: A case has been registered against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Manikanta Narendra Rathod, 30, after a provocative video he posted on Facebook went viral, triggering public outrage and raising serious concerns over communal harmony in the Kalaburagi district, police said. In the video, Rathod is purportedly heard making inflammatory remarks in the Lambani language, allegedly calling for the complete extermination of the Muslim community and urging the killing of those accused of 'Love Jihad' within eight days. He further claimed that if the police were held back for just 15 minutes in Kalaburagi, a massacre of Muslims could be carried out. The video sparked intense backlash on social media, with civil society groups, political leaders, and concerned citizens demanding Rathod's immediate arrest. A complaint in this regard was lodged on Saturday by Syed Aleem Ilahi, 34, following which an FIR was registered at the Central Police Station (CEN Station). Kalaburagi Commissioner of Police Sharanappa S D said: 'Rathod allegedly uploaded a provocative video on Facebook. We are investigating the matter and gathering evidence to determine the extent of his culpability.' This incident comes shortly after another case was filed against Rathod on May 26, 2025, at Chittapur Police Station, for derogatory comments made against Karnataka minister Priyank Kharge. That complaint was filed by Hanumanth Soman, 49, a Congress party worker, who accused Rathod of making remarks aimed at disturbing public peace. Rathod, a former BJP candidate from Chittapur constituency, had contested the previous Assembly elections but was defeated by Congress leader Priyank Kharge. Legal proceedings have now been initiated under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 196(1), (2), 197(1), (2), 299, 351(3), 353(2), and 2.2.

BJP leader Manikanta Rathod booked after his video threatening Muslims went viral

Following a complaint by one Syed Aleem Ilahi, Kalaburagi police have booked BJP leader from Chittapur Manikanta Rathod for threatening Muslim community in a video that went viral on Saturday (May 31, 2025). In his complaint, Mr. Aleem Illahi alleged that Mr. Rathod called for uprooting Muslim community and kill the perpetrators of 'Love Jihad' within eight days instigating the enmity between communities of different faiths. Based on the complaint and the video that went viral, a case was registered against Mr. Rathod at the CEN Crime Police Station in Kalaburagi under Sections 196 (promoting enmity between different groups), 197 (imputations or assertions prejudicial to national integration), 299 (outraging the religious feelings), 253 (statements conducing to public mischief) and 351 (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. In the video clip in question, Mr. Rathod is seen speaking in his Lambani language mentioning a recent rape of a Lambani girl, allegedly by Muslim youths, and calling upon his community members to settle scores against Muslims. In the disturbing video, Mr. Rathod was seen threatening mass violence against Muslims, stating that if the police were held off for just 15 minutes, all Muslims in Kalaburagi could be massacred. He also claimed that 'jihadis' must be eliminated within eight days, and went so far as to say the Muslim community should be 'uprooted'. Speaking to The Hindu, Kalaburagi Police Commissioner S.D. Sharanappa confirmed the registration of a First Information Report against Mr. Rathod. 'The FIR is registered and the investigation is on. Presently, [the] accused is not in Kalaburagi district. We will take action as per the law,' the officer said. This is not Mr. Rathod's first brush with controversy. Several cases are already booked against him in various police stations in Kalaburagi and Yadgir districts on various charges – including smuggling of PDS rice meant for beneficiaries of Anna Bhagya Scheme and threatening to murder Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and his family. Considering his involvement in criminal activities, the Kalaburagi Police had banished him from Kalaburagi district. Yadgir police had arrested him in connection with the rice theft case reported in Shahapur. The BJP had fielded the history-sheeter against Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Priyank Kharge in Chittapur in 2023 Assembly Elections. Mr. Rathod lost the high-voltage poll battle despite many national leaders such as Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath campaigning for him.

SC survey panel seeks extension to May 28 for full inclusion of nomadic groups in Karnataka

BENGALURU: The committee conducting the state-wide survey of Scheduled Castes, headed by Justice Nagmohan Das, has sought an extension of its deadline from May 23 to 28 to ensure full and accurate enumeration. This is to accommodate responses from historically underrepresented nomadic SC groups such as the Lambani, Banjara, Alemari and others who have sought time to furnish details, said Justice Das here on Friday. But the survey is on track for timely completion despite initial hurdles. Launched on May 5, it has already covered an estimated 72% of its target. 'We are confident of completing the survey well within May 28. The extension is not because of delays but to guarantee 100% inclusion and authenticity,' he told the media. The ambitious survey has drawn national attention, with Union authorities seeking details into Karnataka's methodology, he said, adding, 'We have already shared our survey protocols and progress with the Centre.' On concerns about the exclusion of certain SC communities, such as Mansa, Kembatti, Madiga Dasari and Mera, he said that while these groups are availing SC benefits under broader categories like Adi Karnataka or Adi Dravida, efforts will be made to ensure their accurate nomenclature in official records. 'We will inform the government about their specific identities so that due process is followed to officially include them in the SC list, which currently comprises 101 castes,' he said.
