BJP opposed earlier caste report, why is it opposing re-survey: DKS

Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar questioned the BJP's intention in questioning state government's decision to re-conduct the caste census. 'The BJP was opposed to the earlier caste census citing data sanctity issues. We have announced a redo of the census, but the BJP is still opposing this too,' he asked while talking speaking to reporters here. Asked about BJP criticising the decision to reconduct the caste census, he said, 'The BJP did not accept the earlier caste census report, why the opposition now when we are trying to address the concerns? We are not rejecting the earlier census, we are only trying to correct the shortcomings of the earlier survey in order to allay concerns of several communities.' Asked if the survey would be conducted in a scientific manner this time, he said, 'The modalities would be discussed in the Cabinet meeting. Several communities including Lambanis, Jains, Bestha communities had met me and raised concerns on the earlier survey. The previous survey was also done scientifically through door-to-door visits, but some of the people were hesitant to share their caste details. Our national leaders have given us certain guidelines. AICC President too has given us many suggestions. The CM will discuss this in the Cabinet meeting and take a decision.' To a question if the government gave in to the pressure from powerful communities, he said, 'We have yielded to the pressures from all communities. We have yielded to the pressure from the media too.' Asked if it was D K Shivakumar's victory in convincing the High command for a resurvey, he said there was no winner or loser in this matter. Asked if there was a need for the state to reconduct the caste census when the Centre has announced a caste census along with the general census, he said, 'This is our Party's agenda, the BJP has copied it. Rahul Gandhi has always been advocating proportionate representation for the backward classes.'

"Political gimmick...": Karnataka Minister Santosh Lad slams BJP over caste census

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 12 (ANI): Karnataka Minister Santosh Lad on Thursday criticised the BJP for questioning the state government's decision to re-conduct the caste census, calling it a 'political gimmick' and reaffirmed the Congress party's continued support for the excercise. Speaking to reporters on the caste census, Santosh Lad said, 'As for the tax payer money, I am not aware of how much more money will be spent. Already 160 crore and bit of the central assistance has been spent. Let us finish today's cabinet meeting, and then I could fill in with the other details.' 'You (media) should ask the BJP because they have always opposed reservation, they opposed the Mandal Commission and all other reservations in the country. The people who have been opposing the caste census, come out suddenly and in a blue moon one of their Minister announces that they would start the caste census. These are all political gimmicks, while Congress has always been talking about caste census. We are on the verge of completing it,' said Lad. Earlier in the day, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara said that today's cabinet meeting will discuss the caste census re-survey, as several communities have raised concerns about missing or incorrect data. Speaking to mediapersons, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara said, 'We will discuss it in today's cabinet meeting. Many people have raised many questions. Therefore, we will review it in today's special cabinet meeting. We also discussed whether it should be taken to the session. The party high command has also asked us to review it. Some people have said that our community has been left out. Some have said their numbers are less than the actual. That is why we are discussing it today.' Earlier, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar questioned the BJP's intention in questioning the state government's decision to re-conduct the caste census. The Karnataka State Commission for Backwards Classes has also submitted the caste census (socio, economic and educational survey) report to the Siddaramaiah-led cabinet. The caste census report, if released, will be the second by a Congress-ruled state, after Telangana. (ANI)

Siddaramaiah govt launches series of rallies ahead of two year anniversary

BENGALURU: Ahead of the completion of two years in office, the Congress government, led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, on Sunday launched a series of 'Sadhana Samavesha' rallies at Bhyradenahalli near Devanahalli in Bengaluru rural district to showcase its achievements after coming to power. Addressing the rally, Siddaramaiah stressed that Rs 80,000 crore has been spent for people in two years in the form of the five guarantees. The region-wise rallies were apparently planned as per the behest of the party high command to nullify the anti-incumbency and stress that the government is pro-people. Digital title deeds will be distributed to 1 lakh families living in hamlets, such as Lambanis, who live in tandas, and Kadugollas in hattis, giving them revenue village status, at a mega rally slated to be held in Hosapete on May 20, marking the Siddaramaiah regime's two years. The CM, DCM D K Shivakumar and their cabinet colleagues are likely to take part in it. According to Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, 3,614 habitats have been identified for the revenue village status and notification has been issued against 3,221, covering 1.42 lakh families. On April 29, the revenue department will launch the 'bhusuraksha' scheme to give people access to the digitalised land documents. Subsequently, Siddaramaiah is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for 17 'praja soudha' (taluk offices) in Kalyana Karnataka region. On May 16, he will inaugurate the 'zilla soudha' (deputy commissioner's office) in Mangaluru where 'phodi' repair, sub division of agricultural land and documents will be given to around 10,000 farmers. Byre Gowda admitted that the process of digitisation of revenue department records is part of the Centre's mandate, but in Karnataka, the department has gone a step ahead by taking up the scanning of documents to preserve them permanently. Byre Gowda held a series of review meetings with top bureaucrats to send out a message that the revenue department is open to reforms and is with the people, observed political analysts.
