BJP opposed earlier caste report, why is it opposing re-survey: DKS
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar questioned the BJP's intention in questioning state government's decision to re-conduct the caste census.
'The BJP was opposed to the earlier caste census citing data sanctity issues. We have announced a redo of the census, but the BJP is still opposing this too,' he asked while talking speaking to reporters here.
Asked about BJP criticising the decision to reconduct the caste census, he said, 'The BJP did not accept the earlier caste census report, why the opposition now when we are trying to address the concerns? We are not rejecting the earlier census, we are only trying to correct the shortcomings of the earlier survey in order to allay concerns of several communities.'
Asked if the survey would be conducted in a scientific manner this time, he said, 'The modalities would be discussed in the Cabinet meeting. Several communities including Lambanis, Jains, Bestha communities had met me and raised concerns on the earlier survey. The previous survey was also done scientifically through door-to-door visits, but some of the people were hesitant to share their caste details. Our national leaders have given us certain guidelines. AICC President too has given us many suggestions. The CM will discuss this in the Cabinet meeting and take a decision.'
To a question if the government gave in to the pressure from powerful communities, he said, 'We have yielded to the pressures from all communities. We have yielded to the pressure from the media too.'
Asked if it was D K Shivakumar's victory in convincing the High command for a resurvey, he said there was no winner or loser in this matter. Asked if there was a need for the state to reconduct the caste census when the Centre has announced a caste census along with the general census, he said, 'This is our Party's agenda, the BJP has copied it. Rahul Gandhi has always been advocating proportionate representation for the backward classes.'

Supriya Sule rules out alliance with Ajit Pawar or BJP in upcoming municipal elections

We are prepared to contest the municipal elections and ready to face them.' For the last few weeks, there have been rumours about the likelihood of both NCP factions coming together. Recently however, both parties celebrated 'Foundation Day' in Pune, sending out a clear message that there will be no merger of the two factions. It is now clear that the two NCP factions will contest the upcoming civic elections separately and against each other.

AAP govt turns commission agent: Jakhar on land acquisition
Ludhiana: Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar accused the AAP government of conspiring to usurp 25,000 acres of land in Ludhiana and said that the state government was playing the role of commission agent for big real estate houses. He also said that both chief minister Bhagwant Mann and Kejriwal were acting as land aggregators. The AAP government is colluding with real estate dealers to illegally usurp prime agricultural land of Ludhiana by cheating farmers, Jakhar said, adding that BJP would not allow such nefarious designs to succeed. "On June 19, residents of Ludhiana will cast their vote against the move to illegally acquire their land. They will weed out AAP's corruption," Jakhar said while addressing a press conference with Union minister Ravneet Bittu and BJP candidate Jiwan Gupta. Alleging corruption in the last three and a half years of AAP government, Jakhar demanded a high court-monitored probe to ascertain if the money being collected from drug trade and other illegal activities was leading to politicians of any party. He said that the probe could include Punjab Vigilance, IT, ED and other agencies to ensure impartiality. Phina Singh irrigation project gets ₹55.5 crore from Centre
The long-awaited Phina Singh irrigation project in Kangra district has received a sanction of Rs. 55.51 crore from the Central Government under the Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme (AIBP) of the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana (PMKSY) for States annual plan 2025-26. The project has been stalled for over a decade and the state government in several rounds of talks and deliberations with the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India, has taken up this matter since the work on the project was being affected due to insufficient funding. The Phina Singh project in Nurpur in Kangra district was started at an initial cost of ₹204 crore in 2011, which has now escalated to ₹646 crore. The project aims to interlink Kalam Nallah and Chaki River — two tributaries of the Beas river flowing through Nurpur. It also involves constructing a concrete gravity dam across the Chaki river. Water from the dam is to be transported through a 4,307-m tunnel to irrigate 4,025 hectares across 60 villages in Nurpur. Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, said, 'I personally also advocated for the release of funds so that the project could be completed well in time and also took up several other key issues related to this project before the Centre. This project had been stalled for over a decade, but it has now emerged as a ray of hope for the farmers. Upon completion, the scheme will provide irrigation facilities to thousands of hectares of land, significantly boosting agricultural productivity.' In 2023, Himachal deputy CM had sought assistance from the Centre for the completion of the project. After repeated appeals by the state government, the project was finally included under PMKSY in July 2024, paving the way for financial assistance. The Central Government will cover 50% of the total construction cost. The work of the project was started in 2011 and still is under active construction, more than 50% physical progress of minor works has been achieved so far. An expenditure of around ₹300 crore has been incurred by the state government. The cost of the project has been escalated due to enhancement in labour and material rates and modification from Medium Irrigation to Multipurpose project with power generation and road connectivity in addition to the irrigation components.
