Rising police enforcement on Highway 402 in Sarnia

Due to increasing border traffic and congestion near the Bluewater bridge, Lambton OPP say they're stepping up enforcement on Highway 402 in Sarnia. With rising traffic congestion, police say they're targeting unsafe and illegal driving by launching Operation Safe Approach. The move follows a letter penned by Sarnia's mayor last month, which asked the provincial government to help improve safety on the 402. The letter asked for help to ensure free-flowing traffic on the highway and increase enforcement of trucking violations.

2nd swimmer in critical condition after weekend water incident on Lake Huron

A swimmer was transported to hospital in critical condition over the weekend after bystanders reported a person in distress in Lake Huron. Lambton OPP said they and other first responders attended Pinery Provincial Park on Saturday just after 5 p.m. for a report of an unresponsive swimmer. "Investigation determined that the individual had been swimming in Lake Huron when they went into distress," OPP said in a statement Monday. "Good Samaritans assisted in bringing the swimmer to shore and immediately began administering CPR until emergency responders arrived and took over care." A 50-year-old from Hannon, Ont., which is near Hamilton, was taken to hospital in critical condition. The investigation continues, but police say they want to thank members of the public who assisted before emergency personnel arrived on scene. "Lake Huron is a beautiful but powerful body of water, and conditions can change quickly," OPP said. "No matter your swimming abilities, safety should always come first. Always wear a life jacket or personal flotation device (PFD) when swimming in open water. Life jackets save lives." It's the second incident in Lake Huron that police reported Monday. Earlier in the day, they said another swimmer remained in critical condition after nearly drowning at Canatara Beach.

SIU clears OPP officer in shooting investigation

The logo of the Ontario Special Investigations Unit is pictured in Toronto on Friday, April 12, 2024. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Arlyn McAdorey The director of the Ontario Special Investigations Unit determined there were no reasonable grounds to believe an OPP officer committed a criminal offence in connection with shooting his firearm at an SUV on Walpole Island First Nation. On March 2, 2025, police received a call about a male threatening people with a gun at a residence in the area of Dan Shab Road and Chiefs Road North. Lambton OPP officers responded, joining Walpole Island First Nations Police (WIFNP) officers. The man had fled in an SUV before police arrival. The SIU report said that during a roadblock attempt, the man sped towards officers and the OPP officer fired two shots at the SUV. No one was injured. Director Joseph Martino was satisfied that the officer, at the time he fired his weapon, did so believing it was necessary to protect another officer from a reasonably apprehended attack at the hands of the man.
