Orlando or Gainesville? Decision on where the Jaguars will play in 2027 won't come until October
The decision on where the Jacksonville Jaguars will play for the 2027 season will now be made in October, the team said. The team will play in either Orlando or Gainesville for one season while construction on the Stadium of the Future is finished up at EverBank Stadium. The Jaguars released a statement to Action News Jax on Thursday saying the proposals are 'still under review.' Advertisement Orange County Commissioners voted Tuesday, April 22, to give $11 million to bring Jaguars' home games in Orlando in 2027. Jaguars President Mark Lamping appeared on the Brent & Austen Show on the Action Sports Jax 24/7 network on the day of the NFL Draft, Thursday, April 24. Lamping said that it's important to the team to have a partnership with whoever owns the stadium where the Jags will play that season. He said that partnership already exists with the University of Florida. He said that Orlando leaders making the decision to commit the funding was the last step in being able to consider Orlando's proposal fully, removing any contingencies. He said then that if the team couldn't make it in time for the May NFL owners' meetings, then it would be ready for the October meetings. Having the decision made at the October meeting, Lamping said, 'would be a little serendipity. It was at that same meeting a year ago that the NFL owners approved the stadium.' Once this review is completed, the recommendation will be considered by the appropriate NFL ownership committees, and if approved, brought forward to a vote of all NFL owners. 'It is our expectation that the matter will be considered at the NFL Owners' Meeting in October. The vote requires 75 percent NFL ownership approval to pass.' Senate Bill to possibly ban balloon releases in North Carolina
NORTH CAROLINA (WNCT) — A Senate Bill is currently floating around the General Assembly that would ban balloon releases across the state. Balloon releases are typically done for celebrations or to honor a loved one. However, some say they can be harmful to the environment. This bill would prohibit people from doing mass balloon releases or face a $250 fine. Michele Lamping, a Sea Turtle specialist from the Pine Knoll Shores Aquarium says when sea animals ingest balloons, it can be extremely painful and even kill them. 'When we do have good outcomes, which we had means that the animal will pass the balloon a string, which is really awful to watch. You're just kind of waiting for them to pass it. And, you know, it's uncomfortable and awful and you just have to wait for that string to come out and then wait for that balloon to pass,' said Lamping. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Jaguars president Mark Lamping is now under contract through the 2030 season
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Jacksonville Jaguars president Mark Lamping has signed an extension that puts him under contract through the 2030 season. Owner Shad Khan announced the move Tuesday, essentially guaranteeing Lamping will run the business side of the franchise beyond the completion of Jacksonville's $1.4 billion stadium renovation. Lamping played a key role in getting the overhaul approved. It's the third major stadium build of Lamping's career. He was front and center in the development of Busch Stadium in St. Louis and MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. He's been with the Jaguars since Khan bought the franchise in 2012. 'As we look ahead at what will be crucially important years for the Jaguars off the field, especially given all that involves the Stadium of the Future project, the leadership of Mark Lamping is needed more than ever,' Khan said in a statement. NFL owners unanimously approved Jacksonville's 'stadium of the future' in October, a decision that should keep the Jaguars in one of the league's smallest markets for at least another 30 years. It is expected to be completed in time for the 2028 season. Pre-construction work began this month. The Jaguars expect to play in front of a slightly reduced capacity in 2025, a significantly reduced capacity (no upper deck) in 2026 and then host home games in Orlando the following year. They also could play up to three home games overseas in 2027, in London or possibly Ireland. The proposed 63,000-seat, open-air stadium in Jacksonville includes a translucent covering that's the equivalent of 'wearing shades in the sun,' Lamping has said. It's expected to lower outside temperatures by 15 degrees. ___
