The Tartan Tornado has been out of the ring for a year, ever since he lost his rematch against Jack Catterall via a unanimous decision. The Prestonpans boxer is currently on a two-fight losing streak, but will hope to snap that when he faces Ekow Essuman. ‌ Taylor's run began in June 2023, when he dared to be great by taking on Teofimo Lopez, who managed to snatch his WBO light-welterweight championship away via a unanimous decision before Catterall exacted revenge on the Scotsman last year. Now Taylor is back, he will be determined to mark his ring return with a bang as he aims to scale back up the rankings to world title contention. Here, Record Sport takes you through everything you need to know to watch the former unified champion in action. ‌ TV Channel Taylor and Essuman will be the main event of the audaciously named Land of the Brave card. Boxer David Jamieson aims to grab 'pinch yourself' Hydro title chance that can be route to the big time

Jamieson will take on Aloys Jnr on the Taylor v Essuman undercard David Jamieson says fighting at the Hydro this weekend is a 'pinch-yourself' moment, but intends to grab his opportunity with both hands. Hamilton fighter Jamieson, 33, takes on Aloys Youmbi (AKA Aloys Jnr) for the WBA International title at cruiserweight at the Glasgow venue, on the undercard of the Josh Taylor v Ekow Essuman WBO International welterweight title fight. ‌ Both bouts are part of Queensberry Promotions' 'Land of the Brave' evening, and Jamieson can't wait to get going, with the prospect of a world title fight looming later this year. ‌ 'This would be massive. That ranking belt will get me a top-ten spot with the WBA, and it really routes to a world title after that,' said Jamieson. 'That gets me back on track, massively. I think we would be looking at Dubai or Saudi Arabia, and we could be boxing for a world title down the back stretch of the year over there, if I put Aloys Youmbi away here next week. 'I'll need to get sponsored up by Soltan or something like that – especially with ginger hair! 'It's important to grab this chance – you're only as good as your last fight. 'Every fight is massively important, and you hear fighters say it all the time that it has been building to this point – British titles, 'Ally Pally' and all that, everything has been building to this. ‌ 'This is the pinnacle, so this is my moment to pull the trigger. I'm getting my chance, it's proper big-time boxing. 'The stars have aligned, here.' Jamieson says no stone has been left unturned in preparation for Saturday's fight against 22-year-old Aloys. He said: 'I'm looking forward to it big-time. You hear boxers say it all the time, but it has been the best camp to date. It's just a case of gradually bringing the weight down in this last week, but we're ready to go. 'I said to my wife Michaela last week, we've came from Blantyre Miners' Welfare to the Hydro, it's a 'pinch yourself' moment, but we'll not dine out on it until the job is done.'

An intriguing cruiserweight clash sees Aloys Junior and David Jamieson contest Junior's WBA Continental and the vacant Commonwealth Championships. While the sons of two Scottish boxing legends, Alex Arthur Jr and Drew Limond, make their pro debuts. Credit: Leigh Dawney/Queensberry. The final press conference took place at the Scottish Event Campus this afternoon. Taylor said: 'It is great to be back here and this has been my home since the Commonwealth Games. I've had most of my big fights here, Victor Postol, my first world title against Ivan Baranchyk, so I've had most of my big nights here, so I am looking forward to getting back. It has been a little while since I've been here, so I am looking to put on a big show on Saturday. 'Obviously training has been gruesome and hard, hard work, but it feels like I am at holiday camp this week. No dieting, cutting weight or drying out tonight, getting the last bit of water you can out of you. There is none of that this week, I am full of beans, full of energy with a spring in my step. I can't wait to get going on Saturday. 'I will get this journey rebooted and kickstarted again. Take care of business on Saturday, do it in a good fashion and look forward to moving on to big fights in the future. Credit: Leigh Dawney/Queensberry. 'At 140lbs what else was there left for me to do? I'd completed boxing in a sense and won every single belt in boxing you can win. What else was there for me in terms of challenges, setting new targets? There was nothing to do. So, what there was, was moving up with an assault on becoming a two-time, two-weight world champion. 'I am planning on taking this guy out on Saturday and that is what I'm going to do.' Ekow Essuman added: 'Thank you to everyone in Glasgow for accepting me, everyone has been extremely welcoming and it is a beautiful place. I am just happy to be here. 'That is the whole point of it, we're supposed to do that [in response to Taylor's taking out comment]. I don't take offence to it, it is what it is. He's in my way, I'm in his way. 'Of course he believes it, he should. That is good, if he wants to try and end it early it might be to his detriment. We are going to find out on Saturday. I came prepared for the best Josh Taylor there can be, so this is just confirming what I thought would come. 'It doesn't matter about being his backyard or if it was back in Nottingham or in London. I don't have a lot of shows I've boxed on in my home city, like big shows, so I am used to being the away fighter. 'It is just same job, different venue.' Credit: Leigh Dawney/Queensberry. Francis Warren said: 'It is an absolutely great show to reintroduce Queensberry back in Scotland. We have had some terrific nights here over the years and it is an absolute pleasure to be back. It is fantastic to be working with Josh and what he has done in this sport is second to none, literally, with him being the only guy in the UK to be undisputed in the four-belt era. 'Ekow has decided this is the challenge he wants to take and it is going to take a phenomenal effort from him to come up to Josh's hometown and disrupt what I am sure Josh wants to be a successful campaign at welterweight. But Ekow has got his own ambitions at world level and, if he does come up here and do the business on Josh, he is making a real statement. Josh also wants to make a big dent in the world scene. 'We've got some terrific youngsters on the undercard as well, local guys, and it is a pleasure to be back in Glasgow alongside a couple that we brought up from down south in Aloys and Moses. I am looking forward to a cracking night on Saturday.' Like this: Like Related

Josh Taylor returns to the ring as a welterweight

Prestonpans boxer Josh Taylor will return to the ring, headlining the Land of the Brave event at the OVO Hydro in Glasgow on Saturday, 24 May. And after spending his entire career at 140lbs, Taylor will make his official welterweight debut against the relentless WBO European champion Ekow Essuman. Botswana-born Essuman – the 35-year-old nicknamed The Engine – has won 21 and lost one in his professional career and is the former British and Commonwealth welterweight champion. Hibs fan Taylor (19-2, 13 KOs), now 34, has signed with promoter Frank Warren's stable for his first fight since losing a rematch to Jack Catterall in May 2024. He is the former undisputed world champion at super lightweight, but decided to move up a weight after being edged out on points in the rematch of his controversial encounter with Jack Catterall in early 2022. And on the undercard former European bantamweight champion Lee McGregor (15-1-1, 11 KOs) will face undefeated former British champion Nathaniel Collins (15-0, 7 KOs)n an all-Scottish showdown for the prestigious WBC Silver championship. Edinburgh born McGregor last fought on 21 December 2024 at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia as part of the undercard for the heavyweight world title rematch between Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury where he defeated Isaac Lowe via unanimous decision. And the Hearts fan is hoping to make it a double celebration that day because the Scottish Cup final will take place at Hampden Park. And if Neil Critchley's men can overcome Aberdeen in the semi-final there will be 20,000 plus fellow Jambos in town. Tickets for Land of the Brave are available from GLASGOWPictures outside The OVO Hydro Arena.
