Malaysia, Italy strengthen defence ties through high-level engagements
ITALY: Malaysia and Italy have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral ties with a renewed focus on defence cooperation, following a series of high-level meetings in Rome this week. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, who joined Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for a bilateral meeting with Italy Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at Palazzo Chigi on Wednesday, said both countries expressed a shared intention to elevate their strategic partnership. 'The meeting underscored the commitment between Malaysia and Italy to strengthen the existing bilateral relationship. 'Several areas were discussed, including expanding cooperation in the defence sector,' Khaled said in a statement on X. He added that Malaysia viewed its defence ties with Italy as an opportunity to boost the domestic defence industry and national security capabilities. 'We hope this good relationship can bring our defence cooperation to a higher level, ultimately benefiting our local defence ecosystem,' he said. In a separate statement, the Defence Ministry (MINDEF) echoed the sentiment, stating that the long-standing relationship between the two countries could pave the way for further development in Malaysia's defence industry. 'The strong rapport between Malaysia and Italy is believed to have the potential to raise our defence sector to new heights. 'This would contribute to the broader advancement of our national defence capabilities.' The bilateral engagement was part of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's official visit to Italy, where he also led discussions with major Italian industry players, including leading defence contractors. In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Anwar said he held meetings with representatives of Fincantieri and Leonardo; two Italian defence giants that recently participated in the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) 2025. 'These engagements are part of our long-term cooperation outlook, especially in strategic sectors like defence and energy,' Anwar said, adding that he emphasised the need for government-to-government (G2G) partnerships to position Malaysia as a regional maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) hub in Southeast Asia. Anwar also met with Italian energy firm ENI to explore collaboration with PETRONAS, underlining Malaysia's position as a reliable and forward-looking investment destination. He stressed that all commitments made during the trip must be followed by tangible actions to ensure planned investments are executed within the targeted timeframe. The Prime Minister's visit and accompanying defence-focused meetings mark a significant step in Malaysia's efforts to strengthen its strategic defence partnerships beyond ASEAN, with Italy seen as a key European counterpart.

MOT launches TXA 2025 expo for transport & logistics sector
SEPANG: The Ministry of Transport (MOT) will host the inaugural Transport Expo Asia (TXA) 2025 from November 11 to 13, marking a milestone for Malaysia's transport and logistics sector. The event aims to foster collaboration among policymakers, industry experts, and tech innovators to drive sustainable mobility and trade. Transport Minister Anthony Loke highlighted TXA 2025 as a strategic platform to advance greener transport solutions. 'This expo will shape a more sustainable future for Malaysia's transport infrastructure and trade networks,' he said during the launch at Sama-Sama Hotel. Unlike the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA), which focuses on defence, TXA 2025 will spotlight transport and logistics. The Cabinet approved the event to complement LIMA, with TXA 2026 slated for Q3 next year. Key highlights include the 2025 Road Safety Congress, an annual initiative to enhance road safety awareness. Over 80 exhibitors from smart logistics, automation, and digital cold chains will participate, alongside 3,000 trade visitors, including ASEAN delegates. MOT To Hold TXA 2025 As Platform For Industry Players In Transport, Logistics
GENERAL SEPANG, June 24 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Transport (MOT) will for the first time organise the Transport Expo Asia (TXA) 2025 from Nov 11 to 13, as a platform to bring together industry players in the transport and logistics sector. Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the organisation of TXA 2025 strengthens Malaysia's role as a regional leader in the competitive transport and logistics sector. He said it brings together policymakers, industry players, academics and technology providers to shape a smarter and more sustainable future of mobility and trade. "TXA 2025 is a platform for us to discuss and also shape a more sustainable and greener future for our country's transport facilities and trade," he said in a press conference after launching TXA 2025 here today. Loke said TXA is an additional event to the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) but it focuses on industry players in the transport sector. He said the Cabinet had allowed the Transport Ministry to organise another event because LIMA would focus on defence while TXA would focus on transport and logistics. 'This year, MOT will not be the organiser of LIMA. TXA 2025 will be the inaugural edition of the biennial TXA series, with TXA 2026 planned for the third quarter of next year,' he said, adding that the location of the event would be determined later. He said among the important programmes organised with TXA 2025 was the 2025 Road Safety Congress, which would continue in the 2026 edition as an official annual event. 'This congress is being held to raise awareness and cooperation in strengthening road safety in Malaysia,' he said.
