Russia Wooing India With 'Rafale-Beater' Sukhoi Su-57E. Why Is The Deal Still Grounded?
Last Updated: At Aero India 2025, Russia proposed a "golden deal" offering early deliveries of the Sukhoi Su-57E, with domestic manufacturing under the 'Make in India' initiative. Russia's ambition to position its fifth-generation stealth fighter, the Sukhoi Su-57E, as a formidable player in the global defence market continues to face headwinds. Despite the country's ongoing efforts to market the aircraft to strategic partners like India, Malaysia, and Algeria, the aircraft's journey toward export success remains uncertain. At the recently concluded Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA 2025) in Malaysia, the spotlight was expected to fall on the Sukhoi Su-57E. Rosoboronexport, Russia's state arms exporter, had announced with some fanfare that the aircraft would be showcased at the event. However, as images from the exhibition began circulating, observers noticed something missing: the jet itself. Only a scale model was displayed at the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) pavilion; no actual Sukhoi Su-57E made it to the airshow. The Sukhoi Su-57E is the export variant of the Sukhoi Su-57, Russia's answer to fifth-generation platforms like the American F-22 and F-35. Engineered for stealth, supermaneuverability, and equipped with long-range air-to-air missiles such as the R-37M, with a reported range of up to 400 kilometres, the Sukhoi Su-57E represents Russia's bid to enter the elite club of next-generation fighter producers. Russia has long claimed that the jet would attract buyers from Asia and North Africa. It even hinted that the first foreign customer would begin operating the Sukhoi Su-57E by 2025, though it refrained from naming the country. Algeria is often speculated to be that partner, but no official confirmation has been offered by either side. India once stood as a close collaborator in Russia's fifth-generation fighter ambitions. As part of the now-defunct FGFA (Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft) project, India had initially partnered with Russia but exited in 2018, citing concerns over cost, performance, and production delays. Despite that setback, Russia has kept the door open. At the Aero India show in February 2025, Russia had proposed a 'golden deal" offering early deliveries of the Sukhoi Su-57E, domestic manufacturing under India's Make in India initiative, and cooperation in India's indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme. Russian commentators even proposed an India-specific Su-57MKI variant outfitted with powerful long-range missiles. Still, India has yet to respond officially. With no visible movement on the deal, the pitch remains, at best, aspirational. Meanwhile, Malaysia's MRCA (Multi-Role Combat Aircraft) program, originally launched in 2009 to replace aging MiG-29 fighters, has yet to reach a final decision. The initial competition featured fourth-generation jets like the Eurofighter Typhoon and Dassault Rafale, but attention has gradually shifted toward more advanced platforms. Despite Russian efforts to position the Sukhoi Su-57E as a contender, the jet's absence at LIMA 2025 may further weaken its chances in Malaysia's defence planning. Though the Sukhoi Su-57E, nicknamed 'Felon" by NATO, remains a source of pride for Russia's defence industry, its export story is yet to be written. Defence analysts note that while the aircraft's theoretical capabilities are impressive, its limited deployment even within Russia's own air force, and its absence from major airshows, raises questions about its production scalability and operational readiness. Enthusiastic endorsements from Russian defence circles and social media influencers continue. Some even compare the Sukhoi Su-57E favourably to other fighter jets like France's Rafale. [UPDATED] Anwar: Asean Power Grid a major milestone of 46th Summit
PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has hailed the Asean Power Grid (APG) as one of the key successes of this year's 46th Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur. "We are not only making an impressive announcement of a gigantic project for diplomatic collaboration, but this time, we have been able to concretise it through effective programmes and projects," he said. He made the remarks during a joint press conference with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh after the latter's inaugural visit to Malaysia today. Anwar said the initiative was consistent with the region's energy transition policy and expressed gratitude to Vietnam for its support. He also thanked Vietnam for its ongoing cooperation in both bilateral and multilateral platforms, including its participation in the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (Lima '25). Since the elevation of ties between the two nations to a comprehensive strategic partnership, Anwar said rapid progress had been seen in agriculture, maritime and academic cooperation. He also confirmed continued commitments to joint operations and security arrangements. The prime minister expressed admiration for Vietnam's historic resilience and longstanding ties with Malaysia, recalling the country's fight against imperialism and its support for regional unity. He also praised Vietnam's economic performance, calling it phenomenal and a source of inspiration. "Vietnam's economy has done incredibly well, but younger Malaysians may not appreciate that you started from a very low base. "The country was devastated. But in just a few decades, you have transformed. "It's something we admire, and there are areas from which we can learn. "I remember in my youth, we set up a team of Southeast Asian intellectuals to promote Vietnam's inclusion into Asean, with friends from Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore." Addressing Pham Minh Chinh directly, Anwar said: "Personally, prime minister, I am delighted to have you as a friend, and to have Vietnam as a great friend of Malaysia." Earlier, Anwar and Chinh witnessed the exchange of three documents aimed at strengthening cooperation in the fields of energy, education, and regional integration. The documents included a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) and Vietnam Electricity (EVN) on the Asean Power Grid and strategic capacity development, a Letter of Intent for cooperation between Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, and a Letter of Note between UKM and Vietnam National University, Hanoi focusing on strategic collaboration and Asean Integration between Malaysia and Vietnam.

LIMA proved to be effective platform for fostering strategic collaborations
LANGKAWI, Malaysia, May 24 (Xinhua) -- This year's edition of the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) has proven to be an effective platform for sharing ideas, showcasing the latest technologies, and fostering strategic collaborations, said Malaysian Defense Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin on Saturday. According to the defense minister earlier, Malaysia had signed 40 contracts or letters of acceptance, letters of intent and memorandum of understanding worth a total of 11 billion ringgit (2.6 billion U.S. dollars) during the event. He said in his closing ceremony speech of the 17th edition of the LIMA that Malaysia will continue to expand and improve the capabilities of its military-industrial sector to strengthen national security and its prosperity. The official added that the exhibition recorded 1,400 business-to-business meetings and 920 business-to-government sessions over the five days it was held, and attracted over 450,000 visitors, including official visitors and members of the public. This year's highlights included performances by two international flying teams, namely the Russian Knights and Indonesia's Jupiter Aerobatic Team, who joined aerial demonstration groups from the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF), while the runway featured dozens of aircraft from the RMAF and foreign air forces. First launched in 1991, the LIMA has progressively grown to be among the largest aerospace and maritime exhibitions in the region.

From sky-gazer to sky-master: 'Sting' owns the airways [WATCH]
LANGKAWI: From the moment he witnessed his first airshow at the age of 11, standing in awe under the roar of fighter jets slicing through the Langkawi sky, Colonel Mohd Norazan Othman knew exactly what he wanted to be. Today, the 46-year-old Langkawi native, known by his call sign "Sting", pilots the Royal Malaysian Air Force's (RMAF) Sukhoi SU-30MKM, the nation's most advanced multi-role combat aircraft (MRCA). "It all began here in Langkawi. I remember looking up at the fighter jets and telling myself, 'one day I'll fly over this very sky'. "And alhamdulillah, that dream came true," he told the New Straits Times. Norazan fulfilled that childhood vow, performing aerobatics over the island at this year's Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (Lima '25), the same skies he once stared up at. This year's Lima held a special meaning as Norazan was entrusted to be the backseater with the air force chief, General Tan Sri Asghar Khan Goriman Khan, in a high-profile aerobatic display. Their eye-catching aircraft was also draped in a special livery, symbolically named "Toruk Makto", after the mythical flying creature from the science fiction film Avatar. "We say only the chosen few can tame this iron beast. "So, in the RMAF, those who can fly it are considered elite, similar to 'Toruk Makto'," he said. Norazan said he joined the RMAF in 1997, and a decade later, began flying the SU-30MKM Flanker. The aircraft, he said, demands high-level mastery, with its complex systems taking years to fully understand. "To fly the SU-30MKM, you must first qualify as a fighter pilot, and that begins with rigorous academic and flight training. "The systems on board require fast learning and exceptional discipline. It's not for just anyone." Now, he leads the very heart of the nation's Sukhoi operations, as the commanding officer of Gong Kedak air base in Terengganu. Asked what advice he had for young Malaysians, especially those who dream of becoming fighter pilots, Norazan offered a message steeped in experience. "You need strong discipline, mental and physical fitness, and a high level of patriotism. "And don't forget English... all the manuals, training, and systems are in English. You have to be ready," he said.
