New Deans of Faculty nominated in Calicut varsity
Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, also the Chancellor of the University of Calicut, has nominated new Deans of Faculty in various disciplines. This follows the culmination of the tenure of the incumbents.
K. Mohammed Haneefa, one of the Syndicate members, has been chosen as the Dean, Humanities. The others are Sam Thomas (Commerce and Management), K. Abdul Gafoor (Education), V. Vinod (Engineering), Damodar Prasad (Journalism), R.V.M. Divakaran (Language and Literature), J. Gireesh Kumar (Law), and M. Mohammed Mustafa (Science).
Meanwhile, academics aligned with the Opposition parties have alleged that this was a result of a 'rapprochement' between the Governor and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and its mass organisations, who till recently were firmly opposed to some of his actions. Seven of the newly nominated officials were pro-Left academics, they said, adding that an agreement had been reached between Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the Governor when the former visited him at the Raj Bhavan recently. The Opposition-aligned staff organisations also questioned the silence of the Left unions on the issue.
