'We are very fortunate': Hornell McDonald's back in business after contractor plugs leaks

Loyal McDonald's customers in the Hornell area did not have to wait long for the return of Big Macs, Filet-O-Fish sandwiches, Egg McMuffins and hot apple pie. The same goes for the roughly four dozen Hornell McDonald's workers, who were returning to their jobs Tuesday after the 950 state Route 36 store was forced to close Sunday morning when the restaurant's ceiling sprung multiple leaks. The closure turned out to last only 48 hours. While there was some worry that the leaks would keep the restaurant closed for an extended period of time, Rochester-based Leo J. Ross Corporation sent a crew to Hornell on Monday to repair the roof, according to the City of Hornell Codes Office. The roofing crew was able to complete the job in one day and the Hornell Codes gave the all clear after inspecting the work. The McDonald's lobby was warm and dry Tuesday morning as Hornell codes official Larry Bacon removed the no occupancy sign on the front entrance at about 8 a.m. Store employees then began trickling in. Hornell McDonald's Supervisor Tina Peaty said the focus was on the safety of McDonald's employees and customers throughout the entire situation. Peaty said she's grateful the problems were identified and remedied so quickly. "We are very fortunate that they came out and worked in this weather," Peaty said. The Hornell Fire Department responded at 8:05 a.m. Sunday to the restaurant's report of water dripping into the business at several locations. Restaurant workers and employees were evacuated and there were no injuries. Hornell emergency officials attributed the leaks to the accumulation of snow and ice on the building's roof from the frequent February storm blasts. Peaty praised Hornell city officials, including codes and the fire department, for working with the restaurant and keeping everyone safe. "Larry has been wonderful assisting us," she said of Bacon. Located at the shopping plaza anchored by Walmart and Wegmans, the Hornell McDonald's lobby is open from 6 a.m. until 11 p.m. seven days a week. The drive-thru is open until midnight.
