Of Notoriety: ‘Mullingar' opens at Dunes Theatre, burger challenge and Patsy Cline tribute

This weekend, Hard Rock Cafe in Gary kicks off its annual World Burger Tour competition in celebration of Hard Rock's international birthday. Hard Rock Cafe chefs from around the globe are competing in a challenge to showcase their unique burger creations highlighted for a limited time on menus, presenting ingredient elements from their regional cultures and personal tastes and themes. The innovative recipes are now available through Aug. 4 for guests to try, compare and vote, including the Gary location's own 'Crossroads Burger' at Hard Rock Cafe Northern Indiana developed by Chef Ivan. The burger boasts two 'smashed and stacked' burgers, crispy pork shoulder, pepper jack cheese, house-fried pickles, charred onions and garlic ranch aioli. Chef Ivan's dream burger, priced at $19.95, is competing against the offering from Hard Rock Cafe Rome which touts a 'Lasagna Burger with Ragu Bolognese and bechamel,' as contrasted with the Atlantic City Hard Rock property's 'Jersey Shore Burger' that has a house-made blueberry maple aioli and provolone cheese. This year's competition marks the first time the Gary location is included in the finals. Based on an equation of judges' scoring and sales performance, the top five burger recipes will be selected and announced later this summer. Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana is at 5400 West 29th Ave. in Gary with more information at An unneighborly grudge between families can take a long time to 'mend fences.' It's a deliciously dark and moving storyline, seasoned with humor, opening this weekend at Dunes Summer Theatre. 'Outside Mullingar,' opening June 27 and playing until July 13, is a dark comedy by Irish playwright John Patrick Shanley, playwright for 'Doubt.' Set in rural Ireland, Shanley's clever yarn focuses on the unlikely romance between Anthony and Rosemary, longtime neighbors who explore the fine line between love and hate. It's being directed by Michael Lasswell and stars Peter Gertas, Morgan McCabe, Robert Reidy and Danielle Bilderback on the Dunes Summer Theatre historic stage, 288 Shady Oak Drive in Michigan City, continuing the venue's 74th anniversary season. Performances are 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are $30 to $35 for all general seating and available at or call 219-879-7509. Direct from Las Vegas, Amberley Beatty becomes the legendary first lady of country and western crossover into pop music, stepping into the boots and identity of Patsy Cline for her first time on the Theatre at the Center stage, 1040 Ridge Road in Munster, for a 3 p.m. Sunday, June 29 tribute concert. Whether dressed in classic Western attire or elegant evening gowns, Amberley captures the sultry and timeless sound of the legendary singer as audiences join a mesmerizing journey through Patsy Cline's greatest hits, including 'I Fall to Pieces,' 'She's Got You,' 'Crazy,' 'Walkin' After Midnight,' 'Sweet Dreams' and the hauntingly beautiful 'Faded Love.' Tickets are $40 at or 219-836-3255, and there is the option of a four-course pre-concert dinner in the ballroom with a Patsy Cline-themed menu for an additional $30, with reservations required at 219-836-1930 Ext. 2. Hammond Mayor Thomas M. McDermott Jr. and the Hammond Port Authority are hosting the return of Hyryder to The Pavilion at Wolf Lake 7 p.m. Saturday, June 28. Hyryder ranks as one of the Midwest's premier Grateful Dead tribute bands and has been captivating audiences with their riveting live performances since 2008, with a quest to keep the Dead's music alive, and they carry this torch with distinction. It's billed as an immersive live performance to transport audiences to enjoy the legendary songs and showmanship established by the late Jerry Garcia. Kittens ‘left in a grocery bag' outside were found just in time, PA shelter says

A shelter in Philadelphia is working around the clock to help save four kittens that were left 'soaking wet, freezing, and clearly unwell' on the property. On May 22, staff at the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) found a soggy package. Inside, four kittens were fighting for their lives. 'Yesterday morning, four tiny kittens were left in a grocery bag outside of our shelter,' the shelter said in a May 23 Facebook post. 'One of our staff members noticed the bag hanging from a side door. It was cold and rainy, and something just didn't feel right, so they looked inside and found four fragile, shivering kittens barely clinging to life.' At first, it was feared that one of the kittens already had died, but the staff took action quickly. 'The kittens were soaking wet, freezing, and clearly unwell. One of them, completely still and cold to the touch, looked like he might already be gone,' the shelter said. 'We rushed them inside, began warming them up, and administering fluids. Slowly, they began to stir. We named them Lasagna, Baked Ziti, Ravioli, and Spaghetti.' While they were now warm and in a safe space, there was more bad news. 'For a few minutes, we were relieved, but then the test results came back. The kittens tested positive for panleukopenia - a highly contagious and often deadly virus in cats,' the shelter confirmed. 'The four are now in strict isolation in our shelter's hospital, receiving intensive treatment and fighting for their lives.' The shelter still has questions about who put the kittens in the bag and left them outside in bad weather. 'We don't know how long they were out in the rain. We don't know who left them. But we do know that if they hadn't been found when they were, they likely wouldn't have survived,' the shelter noted. 'Please don't abandon animals like this. There is always a better way. 'Lasagna, Ziti, Ravioli, and Spaghetti still have an uphill battle to fight, but we will be alongside them each step of the way.' For more information, visit the shelter's Facebook page.

Buon Gusto takeaway: Perfect park picnic food with serious Italian pedigree

Buon Gusto      Address : Herbert Park Food Market, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4. Telephone : N/A Cuisine : Italian Website : Cost : €€ What's on offer? Patrizio Di Pietrantonio, originally from Pescara on Italy's Adriatic coast, has been working in kitchens since the age of 16, drawing on a culinary legacy from his grandparents, who ran a beachside restaurant in Pescara. With more than 20 years' experience cooking around the world and absorbing influences, Di Pietrantonio officially launched his food stall, Buon Gusto, in August 2023 at the Merrion Square Food Market. He also trades at St Anne's Park and Herbert Park. Piadina, Buon Gusto's signature flatbread from Emilia-Romagna, was a staple food in rural Italian households and remains a standard of regional street food. Each piadina is cooked on a griddle, and filled to order with sliced Italian salumi, cheeses, or a vegetarian option. The menu also includes lasagne, available in Bolognese (meat) or Genovese (vegetarian) style. Seasonal desserts include maritozzi with fresh cream, offered in a mini format suitable for children or small portions. READ MORE Di Pietrantonio's next venture, set to open at Priory Market in Tallaght, will take a different approach, with pasta made on-site, paired with traditional sauces, and served with a focus on zero waste. What did we order? Piada Focosa, Piada Amore, and Lasagna Genovese. How was the service? Very pleasant. You order at the food stall and wait while your order is prepared. [ The Ribs - Gaucho takeaway review: Barbecue sharing platters of Brazilian-style grills and sides Opens in new window ] Was the food nice? The Piada Focosa combines 'nduja, Ventricina salame, lettuce, yellow tomato sauce and chilli oil. Griddled to order, the flatbread is warm outside while the fresh fillings stay cool. The meats aren't evenly spread, but when they land, they bring solid heat and depth. Patrizio Di Pietrantonio's next venture, set to open at Priory Market in Tallaght, will take a different approach, with pasta made on-site, paired with traditional sauces, and served with a focus on zero waste. The Piada Amore pairs pistachio mortadella, burrata, sun-dried tomatoes, iceberg lettuce, and pistachio sauce in a lightly toasted flatbread. The creamy burrata and savoury mortadella complement each other, with sun-dried tomato adding weight and a touch of sweetness. Subtle and balanced, it's the softer, gentler counterpart to the Focosa, and was the pick of our orders. The Lasagna Genovese layers pesto, courgettes, potatoes and green beans under a béchamel top. Nicely cooked pasta and clean flavours make it a solid, unfussy vegetarian option. You can order it hot or keep to reheat at home. What about the packaging? The Piadine are wrapped in paper and the lasagne is in a foil tray. There are plans to switch to biodegradable packaging from Down to Earth. [ Donnybrook Fair review: Revamped flagship has extended its deli offering Opens in new window ] What did it cost? €32 for lunch for three people: Piada Focosa, €11; Piada Amore, €11; and Lasagna Genovese, €10. Where does it deliver? Takeaway only. Available at the following markets: Merrion Square, Thursday, 11am-2pm; St Anne's Park, Saturday, 10am-4pm; and Herbert Park, Sunday, 10am-4pm. Would I order it again? Yes, it's perfect park food, especially for picnics.

Colorado's Rattlesnake Mega Den Is Active Again and You Can See All 2,000 Snakes at Once

Project RattleCam started a livestream of a rattlesnake "mega den" in 2024, and now the stream is back for 2025 The hundreds of rattlesnakes in the den, located in Colorado, are active again after months of winter hibernation The livestream allows researchers to monitor the rattlesnakes and gives animal lovers a chance to see the reptiles up RattleCam is back as over 2,000 snakes begin to emerge from hibernation. The livestream was set up in 2024 through a collaboration between scientists from California Polytechnic State University, Central Coast Snake Services, and Dickinson College in Pennsylvania, according to USA Today. RattleCam gives viewers a peek at the hundreds of wild rattlesnakes living in a "mega den" at an undisclosed piece of private property in Colorado. After hibernating for several months, the den's snakes are starting to emerge to shed their skins and soak up the sun. Many of the female rattlesnakes in the Colorado den are believed to be pregnant and will likely spend the warmer months giving birth and tending to their young, according to the Project RattleCam website. Owen Bachhuber, a California Polytechnic State University graduate student and member of the Project RattleCam team, said researchers expect the mega den's snakes to become active again throughout May. Bacchhuber told USA Today that the location of the Colorado den will remain undisclosed to protect the snakes. The mega den's live stream began in Spring 2024 and rapidly gained 2.5 million views, reaching 180,000 viewers a day in some cases. Bacchhuber and his colleagues use the livestream to study the rattlesnakes and to "show them off to everyone around the world," Bacchhuber told Axios Denver. The RattleCam team captures the livestream by taking turns manually operating a tripod throughout the day. Donations make the project possible and are needed now more than ever, with "the federal government is cutting science [funding] in every place it can," Bacchhuber added. Bacchhuber and other researchers keep managing the stream fun by naming dozens of snakes from the mega den. One of the snakes is named Lasagna because of her identifiable characteristic of folding her body "like a big pan of lasagna." Twitchy is another snake who is considered "a ladies man" because he "love[s] to put on a show" for the females and gets fidgety in their presence. The female mega den snakes carry their young for three to four months before delivering between eight and 17 babies. RattleCam will remain active at the den throughout the birthing season, so animal lovers will have a front-row seat to the arrival of all the new mega den members.
