Maryland police frustrated after teen accused in more than 100 car break-ins released within hours of arrest
A Maryland teen who allegedly broke into 121 cars in a single night was released within five hours of his arrest and local authorities say they are furious because the state considers the crimes to be "lower level," so consequences are not expected. The unidentified 16-year-old boy was arrested last week by the Laurel Police Department after it received multiple reports of break-ins on May 4. The crimes took place in Laurel and nearby Howard County. Surveillance footage captured three teens roving around in a stolen car and smashing the windows of vehicles they came across, police said. "I have little hope there will be further accountability for him due to this broken system," Laurel Police Chief Russ Hamill told reporters. "Due to this gap in concern for his safety, and the public's safety." Read On The Fox News App At the teen suspect's home, authorities found nearly 20 sets of car keys, credit cards, and other evidence that linked him to the car break-ins, Hamill said. Since the teen didn't have a criminal record, the state Department of Juvenile Services characterized the offenses as lower-level crimes and allowed him to be released, Hamill said. "I would offer well over 100 cases in one night, gives you a pretty good record," Hamill said. "These were not violent crimes, as if that lessens the impact on those 121 victims." Two other teens have been identified as the suspect's accomplices, Hamill said, adding that they were expected to be arrested soon. "People need to be held accountable for this," he said. ‘She's not a bad person': Mom says after daughter drives through Laurel festival
UPPER MARLBORO, Md. () — A Prince George's County judge ordered a woman to be held without bond Monday afternoon, after prosecutors said she hit a police officer and over the weekend. Kai Deberry-Bostick, 28, of Laurel, is facing multiple charges, including second-degree assault, resisting arrest and reckless endangerment, among other related offenses. 18-year-old charged in friend's fatal shooting in Beltsville after 'playing with gun', police say Body camera footage released by the Laurel Police Department (LPD) shows Deberry-Bostick moving barriers out of the way, striking an officer and heading toward dozens of people on Main Street despite being commanded not to as a local festival got underway Saturday morning. The judge said she found Deberry-Bostick's actions to be reckless and dangerous, and there were no conditions under which she should be released from custody. Prosecutors in court characterized it as an 'extremely dangerous situation,' while her defense attorney called it 'an unfortunate reaction to the officer's instructions.' Her defense said she had been told by officers the night before to move her car from the street to a nearby parking lot. Police: Propane tank explodes in Laurel, traffic redirected
LAUREL, Md. () — Responders were in the area of Main Street in Laurel on Saturday morning after a propane tank exploded, police said. Details remain limited; however, in on X just before 8:15 a.m., the Laurel Police Department said that Main Street was closed to traffic due to the explosion and that responders were on scene to 'treat anyone who may have been injured.' Dozens of vehicles burglarized in Maryland neighborhoods over weekend

LAUREL, Md. - Authorities say more than 47 vehicles were broken into in the Laurel area over the weekend, with valuables stolen from multiple cars. Laurel Police Spokesperson Laura Guenin says officers believe the incidents took place sometime between midnight and 4 a.m. Sunday. She says some were stolen — and in some cases, not. What they're saying "So what we found yesterday was a lot of the glass was smashed and there were valuables left there. I know anecdotally, we had a citizen who reported that he had an iPad sitting on his front seat it was taken — it was NOT taken. As well as someone else had cash in plain view on their front seat — it was not taken," said Guenin, who tells FOX 5 a lot of time when they see this behavior, it involves juveniles and stolen vehicles. Some of the vehicles targeted in the Laurel Oaks neighborhood appear to have been parked right in front of the owner's home. Laurel Police say this has been an issue for the whole Laurel area, not just the city of Laurel. However, this past weekend, vehicle owners were hit particularly hard. "We saw at least 12 - 15 cars that were broken into," said a Laurel neighbor, Owen McPherson, who also tells FOX 5 he left his lights at his home Sunday night to deter any visitors. Laurel Police shared an image showing at least two suspects on foot and a possible getaway driver. Investigators say the suspects wore headlamps as they roamed parking lots and rummaged through vehicles. "It's not right," said another neighbor Abi Awosika, "These are people's properties. They spend their time working to make things happen for themselves." Awosika walked out of his home Monday morning, stunned to see at least three of his neighbors' driver-side windows covered in plastic with broken glass on the ground. Police are advising people to park in well-lit areas and to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity as soon as it happens. "The best people can do is: 'If you see something, say something.' Don't hesitate. Call us right away. The police have the best opportunity to catch these people when they're doing it in the act, Guenin tells FOX 5. Police are asking anyone in the impacted region who may have caught the suspects on their home surveillance video, to share that evidence with them as the investigation continues.
