March is Brain Injury Awareness Month, are survivors in Ohio getting enough support?

(WKBN) — Over 1.6 million Ohioans have had a traumatic brain injury in their lifetime — that could be from a crash, a fall, a sports injury or a brain tumor. Plus, Ohio has seen the highest increase in stroke prevalence nationwide over the past decade. March is Brain Injury Awareness Month, and there is a challenge to people affected by a brain injury. Ohio spends the least of all states in support and services for survivors. 'Because we don't have the funding for brain injury in Ohio, we don't have the services in Ohio that help folks get back to work, get back to school and have better outcomes. We do have some, but we don't have enough to meet the need,' said Lauren Holly, executive director of the Brain Injury Association of Ohio. Holly believes Ohio hospitals and rehab places are fantastic immediately post-injury but that the state lacks community services such as transitional housing programs.
