How US doctor helped fuel public fears over 'toxic' sunscreens as reality star Sam Faiers faces backlash for not putting cream on her three children
When reality TV star Sam Faiers revealed last week her children don't wear sun protection, she became the latest celebrity to claim that sunscreens are 'harmful' and full of 'toxic ingredients'. Posting to her 2.5million followers on Instagram, the former The Only Way Is Essex star, 34, shared photographs of her children Paul, nine, Rosie, seven, and Edward, two, as they holidayed in Majorca. She wrote: 'My whole family don't actually wear sunscreen. 'Over the years, the kids have built up a really good tolerance to being in the sun. 'Of course, if it's really hot and the sun feels too harsh, I'll make sure we head into the shade… I'm really careful about sunscreen in general, because a lot of them are actually pretty harmful and full of toxic ingredients.' Other celebrities have adopted the same approach: influencers Kelsey Parker and Lauryn Goodman have told their followers they ignore NHS advice to wear sun protection factor of at least 30. Health experts are horrified at what they see as a dangerous conspiracy theory, fearing a fall in sunscreen use will lead to a rise in skin cancer. According to market researchers Mintel, 72 per cent of UK adults used sun protection in the 12 months to September 2024, falling from 77 per cent in the same period in 2023. So, how did the worrying pseudo-science about sunscreen take hold? The Mail on Sunday has traced its genesis back to a scientific paper published in the Journal of the American Medical Association and posted on Twitter in May 2019. The paper, by 19 scientists, tested four sunscreens on the market and found the concentrations of some chemicals exceeded thresholds established by the US Food and Drug Administration. It made clear further studies were needed to determine the clinical significance: 'These results do not indicate individuals should refrain from the use of sunscreen.' But the next day, New York medic Dr Tro Kalayjian, a specialist in obesity, stepped into the debate. He reposted the paper and told his 158,000 Twitter followers: 'Have said this many times now: Be careful what you smear on yourself and your children.' Over the next six years, the 2019 paper – Effect of Sunscreen Application Under Maximal Use Conditions on Plasma Concentration of Sunscreen Active Ingredients – has become one of the most hotly debated scientific works on Twitter and social media site BlueSky. Just last month, Dr Tro, as he refers to himself online, wrote on the website of his company Toward Health: 'Our skin and our gut are literally the physical ways our bodies interact with the world. 'They're how we absorb sunlight and nutrition… but also how toxins, heavy metals, parasites, plastics, and chemicals make their way into our bodies.' He added: 'I often tell patients, 'If you wouldn't trust it inside your body, think twice before putting it on your skin or in your mouth'.' While Dr Tro does not advise against all sunscreens, he says some – like other cosmetics – contain harmful substances. He says barriers such as clothing, hats and shade should be considered. He founded Toward Health, which specialises in obesity treatment and diabetes management in New York in 2017 after losing 150lb on a low-carbohydrate diet. Dr Tro told The MoS: 'I understand those who deeply value public health messaging may struggle with the idea previously recommended practices can become outdated or even unsafe. 'It can feel more comfortable to trust the guidance as-is and view any challenge to it as fearmongering or misinformation. 'But the truth is, these issues are complex. People benefit most when they think critically and independently. Public health messages are important and should be heard, but should also be open to question, especially when the science evolves faster than the guidelines.' UK doctors dismissed the scares. Skin cancer prevention doctor Ross Perry said he is 'horrified' by influencers' comments, calling Ms Faiers 'naive and irresponsible'. Dr Perry told The MoS: 'Children do not build up a tolerance to sun exposure – they are just storing up more sun damage for later on in life. 'It is a well-known fact if children get any degree of sunburn, it more than doubles their risk of getting skin cancer at a later date so that is completely false and misleading. 'Remember any tan or sunburn is creating damage to the skin so SPF should always be worn in the sun.' HOW TO STAY SAFE IN THE SUN To stay sun safe, experts recommend people: Seek shade between 11am and 3pm, which is when the sun's rays are typically strongest Wear at least SPF 30 sunscreen Apply sunscreen 30 minutes, and again just before, UV exposure Opt for water-resistant sunscreen if necessary and reapply after swimming, sweating or using a towel Cover up with protective clothing, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses Be extra careful with babies and young children. Infants under six months should be kept out of direct sunlight Do not use sunbeds or sunlamps Checks moles and skin for any changes

Kyle Walker & Annie Kilner are house-hunting & discussing 5th baby as he desperately tries to win back embarrassed wife
THEY are holiday snaps England footballer Kyle Walker could only ever have dreamed of this time last year. And few, if any, would have had any sympathy for him. 10 10 Fathering a second child with your former mistress will tend to do that. But so far this summer the former Manchester City full-back, 35, and in the twilight of his career, has been busy collecting air miles. A whistle-stop tour of New York at the end of the season was followed by two weeks in Jamaica and a return leg via Miami. Last week he was in Ibiza as the finishing touches were made ahead of his stunning move to Premier League new boys, Burnley. And the one constant throughout the luxury trips abroad? His estranged wife, Annie Kilner, and their four kids. It is a remarkable turn of events given that nearly 12 months ago Annie sensationally filed for divorce. A second child to Lauryn Goodman, one-time Instagram influencer and now self-appointed online safety campaigner, appeared to be the final straw. After months of 'will she, won't she, surely she must,?!' Annie had finally done it. The nation, in turn, heaved a collective sigh of relief on her behalf. But sources close to the couple are now cautiously optimistic of a reconciliation and say they have begun house-hunting in a bid to make a fresh go of things. Friends also reckon another baby is not out of the question. One told me: "The truth is, Annie doesn't want to be with Kyle. She can't forget the past. "She can't forget Lauryn and the two children he has had with her, but she can't see a life without him either. "She's embarrassed. That's why she won't wear her wedding ring. "But she and Kyle have been together since they were teenagers and they don't know anything else. "Kyle doesn't want a divorce either, not least because of the financial implications. "She would want half of his £30million fortune. "So they've reached a stalemate. They aren't happy, but the divorce has been kicked into the long grass. "There's been no mention of it for quite some time now." The couple's decision to begin house-hunting is the clearest sign yet that they intend to give it another go. Their £3.5million mansion in Prestbury, Cheshire, remains a painful reminder to Annie of the heartbreak she has suffered at the hands of the lying lothario. LYING LOTHARIO The source added: "There's too many bad memories in that house. "It's where he proposed and where she found out about each baby with Lauryn. "Moving house isn't going to change any of that. "No matter what happens from here on in they will never be able to have a fresh start because Lauryn is going nowhere. "But the divorce has completely stalled and they've spent the summer holidaying together. "They're still arguing relentlessly but it's become normalised and accepted in their relationship. "They don't know of any other way to live." Kyle and Annie bought the stunning six-bedroom pile from former Manchester City ace, Stephen Ireland, in 2019 and became neighbours of the Rooneys. 10 10 But not long after, Ex on the Beach TV reality star Laura Brown told how she and Kyle repeatedly romped in his £200,000 Bentley 4x4. Fuming Annie, 33, kicked him out of the sprawling home but they got back together. In 2020, he was given the boot again after Lauryn secretly gave birth to his son, Kairo. Kyle moved into an £8,000-a-month flat nearby - but was caught breaching Covid lockdown rules by having an orgy with two hookers. In an exclusive interview with The Sun, Annie said: "What he has done to me and our children is obscene. "I can't begin to put it into words. "In late March last year he was unfaithful with a reality TV star. "I found out a month later and was broken by it. "He begged me to take him back but by July he was at it again. "Not even three months later and someone was pregnant. My youngest was one. Who does that? "I don't think I'll ever be the same again because of what he's done. "I've tried to hate him but how can I hate the man my kids love so much? "I knew it was always a possibility Kyle would do it again but getting someone pregnant was my worst nightmare." What he has done to me and our children is obscene. I can't begin to put it into words. Annie Kilner in 2020 The couple miraculously stayed together against all the odds and Kyle proposed with a £250,000 ring - decking the hallway of their home in a floral arch. They wed in secret in front of a handful of guests but less than a year later Lauryn, 35, was pregnant by him again. Ironically, he was in London for groin surgery ahead of the World Cup in Qatar in 2022 when the chance encounter presented itself. She gave birth to a baby girl, Kinara, in July 2023 - as Kyle begged her not to reveal the truth to Annie. He even considered quitting Manchester City for Bayern Munich in a desperate bid to avoid the looming scandal. 10 But on December 27, as he played for City in a 3-1 win against Everton at Goodison Park, Annie's phone lit up with a message. It read: "Hey it's Lauryn. I just wanted to quickly tell you that Kyle is the father of our daughter." Annie, who was heavily pregnant at the time with the couple's fourth son, announced their shock split two weeks later. The £150,000-a-week player moved into a rented mansion close to their Cheshire home and in an exclusive interview with The Sun spoke of his shame. He admitted: "What I've done is horrible and I take full responsibility. "I made idiot choices and idiot decisions." Annie gave birth to their fourth son Rezon in April with Kyle at her bedside. Weeks later she was in the stands to support him as England battled their way to back-to-back Euros finals in Germany. But pictures of them together illustrated the huge gulf between them. Kyle returned to the UK in the wake of a 2-1 defeat to Spain to a two day court hearing over money for his daughter. COMMON FOE A judge later concluded that Lauryn had used him as an "open ended chequebook" and preyed upon his desire to keep the paternity of Kinara a secret. Friends of the couple said the legal battle had "galvanised" them against a common foe. But Annie hit the roof after the court papers revealed for the very first time the vast sums Kyle was shelling out to Lauryn. Kyle had increased her housing budget from £1.85million to £2.4million after she threatened to move within 10 minutes of his Cheshire home. He paid £48,000 for fitted wardrobes and a media screen, £75,000 for a furnishing fund, £9,115 for 14 CCTV cameras, £5,650 for an alarm and £52,164 for curtains and a blind. In late August, Kyle - banished in disgrace to the third floor annexe - heard the doorbell ring. 10 He was not expecting anyone and was surprised to find a smartly-dressed man waiting nervously for him. Few words were uttered, save for the briefest of introductions, before the footballer was handed an envelope. He shut the door and walked back inside, opened it up and discovered Annie had filed for divorce. As dishes go, it was stone cold. Kyle, who won 17 major trophies with Manchester City during his career at the Etihad, escaped once again. This time he found solace in Italy before a failed loan move with Serie A giants AC Milan saw him return to the UK. He agreed a move to Everton but jumped at the chance to join the Clarets where his eldest son, Roman, is an academy player. A century of England caps now beckons (he would be the first black player to achieve it) and his marriage appears to be back on track. Against all the odds, he is now dreaming of the impossible.

Lauryn Goodman slams trolls after social services called on her kids
Lauryn Goodman has spoken out about her horrific experience with notorious gossip website Tattle Life, saying that social services were even called over her kids she shares with Kyle Walker. Reality television star Lauryn Goodman has spoken out about the harassment she faced from trolls. Including some who called social services on her children with Kyle Walker, after being targeted on a notorious gossip website. Lauryn, 34, has been subjected to horrible slurs from "keyboard warriors" on the "toxic" Tattle Life site. The disgraced platform allowed users to anonymously post intimate and private details about celebs and influencers, often spreading and fuelling gossip. The site has caused irreparable harm to both celebs and wide businesses. Those affected by the site include well-known stars like Katie Price, Alice Evans, Stacey Solomon, and Molly-Mae Hague. Tattle Life's founder, Sebastian Bond, has recently been identified after spreading false and hurtful claims about couple Neil and Donna Sands. The couple won a substantial £300,000 libel payout due to a defamatory 45-page thread on the website. Fashion influencer and clothing brand Sylkie owner Donna, and tech entrepreneur Neil, received damages for the harassment and defamation suffered, according to reports in the Mirror. Lauryn connected with the couple on Instagram and formed a WhatsApp group to attempt to identify the individuals responsible for spreading the malicious rumours on the site. Recounting her dreadful ordeal with the site, she told the Mail that it all started during lockdown when she was expecting her eldest son Kairo with footballer Kyle while he was on a 'break' from his wife Annie Kilner. She alleged that Tattle users slandered her, accusing her of being an escort paid to travel to Hong Kong for sexual encounters. As her relationship with Kyle became public knowledge, she explained that Tattle users began directing vile abuse at her kids. "They have called my children so many nasty, nasty things which I don't ever want to say because it's so disgusting. They used terms for children born out of wedlock, horrible terms that you shouldn't refer any child by. "They're so innocent – they're minors and it's sick. I can't understand why anyone would do this to kids. They think they are funny with it but there is nothing funny about it, what have my children done to deserve this? Take away my part in the mess, what have they done? It's a form of harassment." The situation escalated further when she disclosed that social services had been falsely alerted about her, with claims that Kairo and Kinara were not being cared for properly. Confessing her embarrassment, she said: "People from Tattle were anonymously ringing social services. They say it on the website too, things like: 'She's going to be getting a call from social services...' and the next thing, I get one." Lauryn stated that there had been two interventions from social services, which she described as "just horrible". "They say my children aren't loved but they are, they get hugs all of the time and I read a book to them every night," she said. "They said stuff like I don't feed them and when Kairo was a baby they said I was starving him. I mean, I was exclusively breast pumping to give him milk all hours. It was horrible, it was mean and it is totally unacceptable." She then disclosed that Kinara's name first surfaced on Tattle Life, a detail she hadn't made public and had only shared with close friends and family. "Inevitably, it caused trust issues for me. It makes me paranoid," Lauryn expressed. "It gave me anxiety and it changed me. I used to be outgoing but now I'm a nervous wreck." The influencer also voiced her deep concern over how individuals on the site would track her favourite coffee shop locations or other places she visited. She further alleged that her medical records were discussed on the site, along with outrageous claims that she was "off her head on the gear", implying cocaine use. Lauryn denies ever using drugs. She added: "They contact the companies and point out bad things about people and then they get dropped and that means they lose money, this is affecting people's livelihoods and it's not fair." After her widely covered court case with Kyle, Lauryn revealed how the public attention intensified for her. She commented: "I feel like it has impacted me in quite a lot of ways, not just defamation and libel issues but it has contributed to the circus and the narrative of the saga with Kyle."

Admitting she was "so embarrassed", she said: "People from Tattle were anonymously ringing social services. "Inevitably, it caused trust issues for me. It makes me paranoid," Lauryn said. "It gave me anxiety and it changed me. I used to be outgoing but now I'm a nervous wreck." The influencer also was left deeply concerned as those on the site would stalk her regular coffee shop hot spots or various other places. She further claimed that her medical records were mentioned on the site, along with wild accusations that she was "offer her head on the gear", referring to cocaine. Lauryn strongly denies that she has ever taken drugs. Lauryn continued: "They contact the companies and point out bad things about people and then they get dropped and that means they lose money, this is affecting people's livelihoods and it's not fair." Following her highly publicised court battle with Kyle, the heat ramped up on Lauryn. She said: "I feel like it has impacted me in quite a lot of ways, not just defamation and libel issues but it has contributed to the circus and the narrative of the saga with Kyle."

EXCLUSIVE How I helped unmask Tattle's King of Trolls, by LAURYN GOODMAN: Site's abuse of my children with Kyle Walker led to panic attacks and calls from social services. Then I joined a secret group - and got delicious revenge
The endearing photo showed two children lying together on a cosy rug with a book – taken from behind to conceal their faces. Proudly posting it on social media was nothing out of the ordinary for self-styled 'mumfluencer' Lauryn Goodman. But she could never have imagined the bile it would attract. She was devastated to discover that the snap had been doctored and posted on the notorious gossip website Tattle Life. The NSPCC logo had been pasted at the top of the photo, along with the children's charity's phone number.
