Cops to educate law students on new laws

Vijayapura: The district police have partnered with a local law college to demonstrate key provisions of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) to law students. This initiative will also benefit trainee cops, who will learn lessons from law teachers. Laxman Nimbargi, superintendent of police, Vijayapura, told TOI that the department entered a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the School of Law, BLDE (deemed to be university), Vijayapura. "We will attach 2-3 students to the police station of their convenience in the district and give practical exposure from the process of registering a complaint to filing a chargesheet. Apart from this, they will also gain knowledge of investigation skills. We will hold programmes on happenings in the law sector so that students and cops benefit. It will also be helpful for the cops, right from constable to the SP, to get updated with new laws, court orders, research, and other happenings in the legal sector. Continuous learning is the need of the hour for police as many new acts are coming up these days. Police are experienced enough to handle traditional offences like theft, robbery, murder, etc, he said. However, there is a need to update their skills to investigate white collar, cyber and social media offences. This initiative will create a win-win situation for both prospective advocates and cops and make both qualitative, which helps to reduce offences in society," he analysed. College principal Dr Raghuveer G Kulkarni said that students will learn the process of registering FIR, investigation, and the role of a police officer. "They will also learn the difference between criminal complaints and private complaints. They often visit their nearby police station and study the police functioning style. Meanwhile, we faculty members of the law college share our knowledge on new acts and interpretation through theoretical sessions at the police training centre. As many as 89 students, who are pursuing their LLB first year, will benefit from this initiative, which lasts for three years as per the current MoU," he stated. Sangayya Hiremath, assistant sub inspector, Basavan Bagewadi, said that this initiative will help cops to solve real-time problems. "When we joined the department, we did not imagine cyber and white-collar crimes. As they are emerging in various new forms, knowledge sharing by law experts will update our skills, and the benefit will be forwarded to the commoners at large. We can also avoid innocents being booked for petty reasons," he commented. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Doctor's Day 2025 , messages and quotes!

Major heist at Canara Bank: Nearly 59 kg gold and cash looted in Karnataka

The incident was reported to the Regional Head, who arrived at the branch with officials from the Regional Office by 1:00 p.m. Police were informed shortly thereafter and reached the location at approximately 1:30 p.m. Upon inspecting the premises, police and bank officials found the main door of the strong room intact. However, the inner grill gate had been cut and bent. Inside, one of the steel almirahs used to store gold ornaments was found empty. A total of 1,373 gold packets, weighing 59,348.94 grams gross, were reported missing. Approximately 372 grams of gold was found scattered inside the premises, leading to a net loss of 58,976.94 grams. In addition, another almirah containing cash had been opened, and Rs 5,20,450 was missing. The culprits also removed the CCTV NVR unit and its hard disk, effectively disabling all surveillance recordings during the break-in. The branch had last operated on 23 May, and the burglary is believed to have occurred between 7:00 p.m. that evening and 11:30 a.m. on 25 May, coinciding with the fourth Saturday and Sunday bank holiday closure. A delay in filing the police complaint was attributed to the time taken to physically verify and reconcile the remaining gold inventory. Police have registered a case and launched a full-scale investigation. Superintendent of Police Laxman Nimbargi confirmed that eight special teams have been constituted to probe the case.

In one of the biggest gold heists in the country, gold worth Rs 52 crore stolen from bank in Karnataka's Vijayapura

In one of the major gold heists reported in the country, thieves in Karnataka fled with gold worth Rs 52 crore from a branch of Canara Bank in Karnataka's Vijayapura district over a weekend last month. Though the theft took place in the Managuli branch of Canara Bank in Vijayapura on May 23, the crime was discovered on May 26 when the staff came back to work. The police are yet to make any arrests in the case. While the thieves decamped with 51 kilogram of gold ornaments, the police have yet to find out about the mode of transport of the loot. On Monday, Laxman Nimbargi, Superintendent of Police, Vijayapura, said it is suspected that the gold ornaments were stolen between 6 pm on May 23 and 11.30 am on May 25. 'We have formed eight teams to nab the accused. It is suspected that 6 to 8 people were involved in the theft,' he added. A police officer said it was a pre-planned theft, and the thieves waited for a long weekend, the second Saturday and Sunday, to commit the crime. The officer said the thief used a fake key to enter the bank, and switched off the alarm. They also switched off the CCTV cameras, and took away the Network Video Recorder (NVR). They only opened the bank lockers, and fled with the gold. The Vijayapura police said that after the theft, the accused kept a black colour doll, making it look like they had performed some ritual at the crime scene. This is not the first time that a bank has been the target of a heist in Karnataka. On October 28 last year, a gang stole gold ornaments worth Rs 13 crore from a branch of the State Bank of India (SBI) in the Nyamathi town in Davanagere district, 325 km away from Bengaluru. The Davanagere police later arrested six people involved in the crime. On January 17 this year, a gang robbed gold worth Rs 12 crore at the Vyavasaya Seva Sahakari Sangha Bank at Kotekar in Mangaluru. The police arrested six people in connection with the heist.
