Remains of OFW killed in Iran-Israel missile strike return home

The remains of overseas Filipino worker (OFW) Leah Mosquera, who died from injuries sustained during an Iranian missile strike in Israel, arrived in the Philippines on Wednesday. Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac confirmed the repatriation in a Facebook post. Mosquera was critically injured when a missile struck a residential building in Rehovot, south of Tel Aviv, on June 15 amid escalating tensions between Israel and Iran. She was admitted to Shamir Medical Center and placed in intensive care but passed away on July 13. Two other Filipino workers were also injured in the incident but were released from the hospital after receiving treatment. Cacdac earlier paid tribute to Mosquera's dedication, calling her a symbol of the quiet heroism and strength of Filipino migrant workers. 'Her dedication and quiet heroism, we see the strength and sacrifices of our overseas Filipino workers who carry the hopes and dreams of their families, their communities, and our nation,' he said. The DMW and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) will provide full assistance to Mosquera's family.

The Philippine Embassy in Israel, along with members of the Filipino community, held a memorial mass on July 18 for Leah Mosquera, the Filipina caregiver who died in the Iranian missile attack in Rehovot on June 15. The mass was led by Fr. Carlos Santos and was attended by the ambassadors of Singapore, Thailand, and Nepal; Leah's sister Mae Joy; her friends in Rehovot; and several Filipino community leaders. Bishop Giacinto-Boulos Marcuzzo conveyed the condolences of Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, to the Filipino community. Bishop Marcuzzo also gave a blessing to Leah's photo at the end of the mass, followed by a flower offering by those in attendance. DMW mourns death of Filipina caregiver in Israel after Iran missile strike

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) is mourning the death of Filipina caregiver Leah Mosquera, who succumbed to injuries sustained from an Iranian missile strike in Rehovot, Israel on June 15, 2025. In a statement, the DMW honored Mosquera's dedication, calling her a symbol of the quiet heroism of overseas Filipino workers. The department also extended its condolences to her family. Mosquera, 49, from Negros Occidental, underwent multiple surgeries and was in intensive care for several weeks at the Shamir Medical Center before passing away. She was fondly called 'Ate Leah' and would have turned 50 on July 29. The DMW, in coordination with the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) and the Philippine Embassy in Tel Aviv, will shoulder the cost of repatriating her remains and burial. Her sister Mae Joy, also a caregiver in Israel, will receive assistance to return home. Financial assistance will be given to Mosquera's family, while the Israeli government has pledged lifelong support as part of its commitment to stand with her loved ones. The Israeli Embassy in Manila also expressed deep sympathy, stating: 'We mourn with you and honor Leah's memory with dignity and compassion.' Iran's missile strike was in retaliation for Israel's military operation 'Rising Lion' targeting Iran's nuclear program.
