Welling crash to season opener defeat at Cheshunt
New look Welling United crashed to defeat at Cheshunt in their Isthmian League Premier Division curtain raiser. All sixteen of Lee Martin's Wings squad made their league debut for the club, possibly some sort of a record, as Welling started their first season at step three for over forty years. Martin has always stated that he will not play 'square pegs in round holes' so with no left back in his squad he went for a system with three centre halves and wing-backs. He also decided to select Slavomir Huk in goal over Freddie Norman. Huk was in action early on when doing well to tip over a first time shot by Antonis Vasiliou. Welling then came close at the other end when Jack Paxman cut in and shot and it flew back out off the far post. In the sixteenth minute, Welling went ahead. A corner wasn't cleared and Ruben Shakpoke was alert to fire home. Five minutes later, the hosts levelled. Sam Granville sliced it into the path of George Nunn, presenting him with a simple tap in. Shakpoke's high pressing then gave him the opportunity to dispossess Raul Da Silva before bearing down on goal. He tried to slip it past goalkeeper Preston Edwards but the goalkeeper made a good save, when a square pass might have been a better option with George Evans awaiting a tap in. Poor defending down Welling's left hand led to Cheshunt going ahead twelve minutes before half time. Although Logan Dobbs did well to hook the original chance off the line, the Ambers recycled it and Vasiliou's shot dipped just under the bar and inside the far post. Nine minutes later, the hosts added a third with the Wings' defence again in disarray. Huk did well to block Sam Granville's shot but it came out to Arthur Iontton who fired home. At half time, Martin responded by making a triple substitution with James Dyer, Tom Leahy, and John Ufuah replacing Hamilton Antonio, Greg Cundle and Evans. Paxman dropped back into the holding midfield role with Dyer in a more advanced central midfield position. Ufuah and Luke O'Neill were both off target for the Wings before a Shakpoke shot was deflected over. Huk made a good save from Lordon Akolbire however, it was Welling who drew the next blood with twelve minutes remaining to give themselves a life-line. Dyer's well paced through ball sent Ufuah clear and he finished with aplomb. Soon after, Welling might have levelled. Ufuah again burst through but, rather than shoot, he squared to Leahy who failed to get power in his shot and Edwards was able to get across to save. As Welling searched for a leveller, they again defended poorly and Jesse Effa, who had only just come on, arrowed a shot into the bottom corner to ensure the Wings headed home empty handed. Welling United: Huk; O'Neill (Lewis 65), Dobbs, Majoyegbe; Antonio (Dyer 46); Williams-Bushell, Penn, Paxman, Cundle (T. Leahy 46); Evans (Ufuah 46), Shakpoke (Sinai 72). Sub not used: None.

Welling continue pre-season campaign with victory at Herne Bay
George Evans scored the only goal in Welling United's pre-season friendly at Herne Bay. He timed his run perfectly to get behind the home team's defence before finishing clinically. Earlier on, Ruben Shakpoke had rattled the framework of the Herne Bay goal with a fierce drive however, the hosts also had their chances and both goalkeepers made excellent saves. After the match, Lee Martin gave his thoughts. 'I've always said that pre-season was about getting minutes in the boys legs but this one, with eleven days until the opening fixture, it was about going out and winning. At times I thought we showed what we were capable of doing. It was a bit of a scrappy game really. 'Winning becomes a habit and it's important that we go into it fairly strong and off the back of the Leyton Orient one where we lost a bit of confidence. Today was completely different because we went in with two forwards.' Evans and George Penn, both on loan from Bromley, made their first appearances in Welling colours. 'He (Evans) is superb.' purred Martin. 'He's almost like a throw back. He's full of energy, full of beans. I thought George Penn, as well, dictated the tempo of play. He's got a nasty side as well. He's a clever footballer. 'We've had these pictures painted for a while now. We spoke to the pro clubs and planted the seeds early. We're not just reactive. The Orient game told me everything, and more, but that was already in the pipeline.' Martin was also full of praise for the trialist goalkeeper. 'He's superb. He's not going to be number one, but he is someone who I think has got a great opportunity to come in and play our style of football. I love him. He's a great character. He's come in and travels everywhere with us, he's always keen to listen and learn.' Jack Paxman played the entire ninety minutes, and Greg Cundle the first forty-five, after both had missed Saturday's game with VCD Athletic as a precaution. Martin explained 'Greg Cundle has got a tight calf, James Dyer's away, Gil (Carvalho)'s away, Eric (Wilhelm's) been injured as well so it's an opportunity for the boys to turn up. Scott Simmons has really showcased what he can do today. I thought he was superb. We've got a young squad. They're not going to be ten out of ten every week. We're asking them to develop and that's down to me and my coaching staff. 'It's not perfect. I'm a tough person to please but I'm relatively happy, certainly with the potential business that we are going to do as well. I've read before about this revolving door at Welling. It's not. We've got this two or three year plan where we want to keep eight to ten core boys, who know the club, know the DNA, got the blueprint of what it means to play for us, and the club.' Welling United: Trialist A, Trialist B, Majoyegbe, Simmons, Cundle, Trialist C, Penn, Shakpoke. Paxman, Andrews, Evans. Substitutes: Huk, Sinai, J. Leahy, Trialist D, Ufuah, Trialist E, Wilhelm.

Dramatic footage shows rugby-playing police officer tackle and arrest wanted man
Police camera footage shows the moment a rugby- playing police officer tackles a wanted man to the ground. Lee Martin, 33, was wanted for a number of offences, and he was traced to the North Tyneside area on May 1. Northumbria Police said Martin tried to escape from officers and ran along a rear lane in Wallsend to avoid being captured. Yet a plain-clothed officer used his rugby skills to intercept Martin and arrest him. Martin, of Kings Road North, Wallsend, was jailed for 20 weeks after pleading guilty to burglary, theft and assault. Detective Inspector Jonathan May praised the officer 'who was determined to catch Martin before he had the chance to escape and managed to apprehend him'.

What time is the FA Cup final on today? TV channel and live stream details Crystal Palace face Manchester City in the FA Cup final on Saturday afternoon, with both sides hoping to end the season on a high by lifting the prestigious trophy A detailed view of the FA Cup Trophy (Image: Getty Images ) Crystal Palace are setting their sights on clinching their first-ever FA Cup as they prepare to take on Manchester City this Saturday afternoon. The Eagles, no strangers to the high-stakes atmosphere of Wembley, have twice reached the final of this esteemed competition in their 119-year history. In contrast to today's rules, the 1990 FA Cup final against Manchester United on May 12 concluded with a 3-3 draw after extra time. As penalties were not used to decide the winner, a rematch was scheduled five days later. In the subsequent match, Palace suffered a 1-0 defeat due to Lee Martin's goal in the 59th minute, returning from west London with runners-up medals instead of the coveted title. The Eagles faced the Red Devils again in the 2016 FA Cup final, but once more fell short, losing 2-1. Jason Puncheon scored the opening goal for Palace in the 78th minute of that match, only for Juan Mata to equalise shortly afterwards. Jesse Lingard then secured the victory for United in extra time, denying the London side the championship once again, reports the Mirror. Eager fans will be hoping it's third time lucky when they square off against Pep Guardiola's City this Saturday. After triumphing over Stockport, Doncaster, and Millwall in the initial rounds, the Eagles delivered a 3-0 defeat to Fulham in the quarter-finals before repeating the same score-line against Aston Villa in the semis. Article continues below However, manager Oliver Glasner is under no illusions about the challenge his team faces, particularly as they're up against seven-time champions City in the final. Despite a lacklustre Premier League season, Guardiola's side has been formidable in the FA Cup, with an 8-0 thrashing of Salford in their opening round and subsequent victories over Leyton Orient, Plymouth Argyle, Bournemouth, and Nottingham Forest on their journey to Saturday's final. Having lost to Manchester rivals United in last year's final, Guardiola will be keen to avoid a repeat performance this weekend. With an afternoon full of football excitement ahead, Mirror Football provides a guide for fans to follow the action from home.... When does the Crystal Palace vs Manchester City match start? The showdown between Crystal Palace and Manchester City is scheduled for Wembley Stadium, kicking off at 4.30pm on Saturday. How to watch Crystal Palace vs Man City FA Cup final – TV channels, live streams
Crystal Palace are set to take on Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium, with hopes of lifting the title for the first-ever time in the club's 119-year history Crystal Palace will hope to lift their first ever FA Cup when they face Manchester City on Saturday afternoon. No strangers to the tensions of Wembley, the Eagles have twice made the final of the prestigious tournament in their 119-year history. Unlike the modern game, the 1990 FA Cup final against Manchester United on May 12 ended in a 3-3 draw after extra time - and as penalties weren't used to determine a winner, the game was replayed five days later. In that clash, Palace were handed a 1-0 defeat courtesy of Lee Martin's 59th minute goal, making the short trip home from west London with runners' up medals rather than a title. The Eagles also faced the Red Devils in the 2016 FA Cup final, but were once more handed a 2-1 loss for their efforts. Jason Puncheon opened the scoring for Palace on that occasion in the 78th minute, before Juan Mata equalised moments later. Jesse Lingard then stole the winner for United in extra time, once more starving the London side of the title. And many fans will be hoping it's third time lucky, when they face off against Pep Guardiola's City on Saturday. After beating Stockport, Doncaster, and Millwall in the opening rounds, the Eagles handed Fulham a 3-0 loss in the quarter-finals before dispatching Aston Villa with the same score-line in the semis. However, manager Oliver Glasner will understand that securing glory for his side will be no easy feat, especially given they face seven-time champions City in the final. What Guardiola has lacked in the Premier League this season, he has certainly made up for in the FA Cup - with the Cityzens humiliating Salford 8-0 in their opening round, before sending Leyton Orient, Plymouth Argyle, Bournemouth, and Nottingham Forest packing on the way to Saturday's final. And given that City were bested by their Manchester rivals in United in the final of last year's competition, Guardiola will be determined to not make the same mistakes this weekend.
