Urgent 'Do not swim' warning issued at beach after sewage line burst
A stark "do not swim" warning has been issued by the Environment Agency (EA) after a Southern Water sewage line burst. Fareham Borough Council confirmed that bathing water from Hill Head to Lee-on-the-Solent has been closed due to "sewage pollution". A sewage pipe had burst in the Salterns Road area of Hill Head on Tuesday evening. "Do not swim, paddle, or enter the water until further notice," a spokesperson for the council said. The warning has been in place since 9.52pm on Tuesday, the EA's website said. A spokesperson for the agency confirmed to the Echo that pollution was "stopped" in the early hours of Wednesday morning. READ MORE: Road with flooding history set for five-week closure for upgrade The EA's officers had also been on site yesterday to monitor Southern Water's progress with repairs to the sewer. "As a precaution, we issued guidance against bathing at Lee on Solent," the spokesperson said. 'Today we were on site to monitor Southern Water's progress with repairs. We will update Swimfo when bathing advice is lifted.' A spokesperson for Southern Water said that they had received "reports of a leaking sewage in the Salterns Road area of Hill Head" on Tuesday evening, and "attended immediately to prevent any impact to the local environment". READ MORE: Extremely rare bird of prey spotted swooping through the sky The spokesperson continued: "We temporarily stopped flows through the problem pipe and used tankers to ensure customers could continue to use their toilets, sinks and showers, while repairs have been carried out. "This work is ongoing, with traffic management in place. We apologise for any disruption caused. "In close liaison with the EA, we are carrying out detailed modelling of any potential impacts on bathing water quality nearby, but in the meantime, the EA has issued a precautionary bathing water advisory for the area and Fareham Borough Council has chosen to advise against bathing between Hill Head and Lee on the Solent." The advice not to swim has not come from Southern Water.

Ann Blackwood death: Man guilty of Stubbington cemetery murder
A man has admitted murdering his 71-year-old ex-wife who was found fatally injured at a Suter, 68, fatally injured Ann Blackwood by their son's grave on what would have been the teenager's birthday, The Portsmouth News has was pronounced dead at Crofton Cemetery in Stubbington, Hampshire, shortly after police were called at 15:45 BST on 24 July pleaded guilty on the first day of his trial at Portsmouth Crown Court and will be sentenced on 3 October. Ms Blackwood, from Lee-on-the-Solent, was given medical treatment at the scene but died a short time also from Lee-on-the-Solent, faced six additional charges in a separate case of indecently assaulting a girl under the age of pleaded guilty to one offence and was found not guilty of the others following a trial at Bolton Crown Court.A legal order, which banned reporting of the murder plea in May, has been lifted by a judge at Portsmouth Crown Court. In a previous statement, Ms Blackwood's family said: "Her daughter, brothers, their families and all her friends are absolutely devastated by the loss."A loving, caring, kind-hearted mother and friend who was very popular in her local community, she was enjoying her retirement with an active lifestyle which included tennis, sailing, cycling and music."

Alver Valley tube slide in Lee-on-the-Solent targeted in arson
A fire that broke out at a tube slide in a country park is believed to have been started deliberately, the fire service and police have were called to Alver Valley Country Park in Lee-on-the-Solent on Wednesday at about 17:30 & Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue Service thanked people for calling its control room to report the fire "so quickly" and said it was not "the first time the children's play park and surrounding woodland has been targeted by arson".Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said the fire was being treated as arson and urged those responsible to come forward. Officers at Gosport Central, investigating the fire, said: "It is clear the act of a few has, and will clearly effect a lot of you as we approach the half-term where you will have been using that space with your children."There is already information that may help us identify the offenders and so I would also urge those people responsible to come forward before we come knocking on your door."
