Sea pollution warning after sewage pipe burst
Beachgoers have been warned against swimming off a two-mile (3km) section of the coast after a sewage pipe burst. The Environment Agency (EA) said the rupture happened near Lee-on-the-Solent, Hampshire, on Tuesday night and the pollution was stopped in the early hours of Wednesday. Fareham Borough Council said the bathing water was closed as far as Hill Head until further notice. Southern Water said flows through the pipe had been stopped and repair work was ongoing. In a statement, the EA said: "Our officers have been monitoring Southern Water's repair to a sewage line which burst last night. "As a precaution, we issued guidance against bathing at Lee-on-the-Solent. "We will update Swimfo [a government website] when bathing advice is lifted." Southern Water said: "We temporarily stopped flows through the problem pipe and used tankers to ensure customers could continue to use their toilets, sinks and showers, while repairs have been carried out. "This work is ongoing, with traffic management in place. We apologise for any disruption caused. "In close liaison with the EA, we are carrying out detailed modelling of any potential impacts on bathing water quality nearby." The MP published a letter from the water firm, written on Monday, which said there had been "no releases affecting the bathing water" in the two locations since 7 June. Southern Water's Rivers and Sea Watch page shows there was a 49-minute discharge at Hill Head on that date. Yachtsman murdered ex-wife next to their late son's grave
A yachting enthusiast murdered his ex-wife at a cemetery by their late son's grave. Martin Suter, 68, admitted murder after his sailor ex-wife Ann Blackwood, 71, died where their son was buried at Crofton Cemetery, Stubbington, on July 24, 2023. Ms Blackwood, who friends described as 'kind-hearted', was killed on their late son Christopher's birthday, more than 20 years after he died aged 15. Suter lived in a £800,000 home around a mile from Ms Blackwood in Lee-on-the-Solent. He admitted murder in court in May last year but his case was subject to reporting restrictions, which have now been lifted. He faced a separate trial last year in which he was convicted of indecently assaulting a girl under 14. Friends and family said they were 'absolutely devastated' by Ms Blackwood's death, adding that she was a 'loving, caring, kind-hearted mother and friend who was very popular in her local community'. They said: 'She was enjoying her retirement with an active lifestyle which included tennis, sailing, cycling and music'. Suter was a Green Party member and council election candidate. He was also an active member of the St Faith's Church in Lee-on-the-Solent. He was due to stand trial for murder in May last year, but on the day of the trial changed his plea to guilty. His case has been fraught with legal complications and reporting restrictions imposed by Portsmouth Crown Court, preventing any details from being shared. At the same time, he faced proceedings at Minshull Street Crown Court in Manchester related to historic sex offences. He admitted indecent assault of a girl under 14 in May 2023 and faced five further charges at a trial in Manchester in July last year, but was cleared of those five counts. In September, he will appear at Portsmouth Crown Court for a hearing where he is due to be sentenced.

Tube slide damaged in deliberate park arson
A fire that broke out at a tube slide in a country park is believed to have been started deliberately, the fire service and police have said. Crews were called to Alver Valley Country Park in Lee-on-the-Solent on Wednesday at about 17:30 BST. Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue Service thanked people for calling its control room to report the fire "so quickly" and said it was not "the first time the children's play park and surrounding woodland has been targeted by arson". Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said the fire was being treated as arson and urged those responsible to come forward. Officers at Gosport Central, investigating the fire, said: "It is clear the act of a few has, and will clearly effect a lot of you as we approach the half-term where you will have been using that space with your children. "There is already information that may help us identify the offenders and so I would also urge those people responsible to come forward before we come knocking on your door."
