KL's urban makeover must keep its soul and honour its roots, says Fahmi to DBKL

KUALA LUMPUR, May 26 — The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has been urged to carefully examine historical elements to be retained in urban redevelopment involving 139 identified areas, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He said the retention of historical elements is crucial to serve as memories, especially for the original residents of a place, in the pursuit of sustainable and resilient development. 'This area was once a squatter area consisting of wooden houses, due to relocation during the construction of the New Pantai Expressway (NPE). So, there is some history here because some residents, including my staff, were relocated to this area once upon a time. 'So, they have memories of growing up in this area, so that future generations know that before they were born, in previous generations, there was such a community. 'I believe this will help us have strong roots, including in terms of culture, identity, and memories of the place where we were born and raised,' he said. Fahmi, who is also the Member of Parliament for Lembah Pantai, said this when met by reporters after officiating the groundbreaking ceremony for Taman Rimba Bukit Kerinchi at Pantai Sentral Park, developed by IJM Land and Amona Group, here today. Also present were DBKL Planning Executive Director Datuk Zulkurnain Hassan, IJM Land Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Datuk Tony Ling, and Director cum CEO of Amona Group, Datuk Che Hasnadi Che Hassan. Fahmi said that for Lembah Pantai, several areas including Taman Bukit Angkasa have been identified for redevelopment due to housing projects developed 30 to 40 years ago, whereby infrastructure, such as lifts, are now in a dilapidated and worn-out condition. 'To ensure that all residents, especially owners, benefit, we need clear laws. Therefore, DBKL's aspiration to assist in the redevelopment of these 139 areas around Kuala Lumpur needs to move in tandem with a new act, namely the Urban Renewal Act,' he said. Meanwhile, he said thousands of trees, including Meranti Damar, Meranti Daun, and Merawan Siput Jantan species, will be replanted at Taman Rimba Bukit Kerinchi, which is expected to be completed by the end of this year. 'I have asked the developer to consider several aspects, including the history of the area, so that it can be incorporated into the design of the park. 'If we look at the Kuala Lumpur area, there are communities that have long been in certain areas before they were developed, and I hope here we can celebrate that history by incorporating it either in the design or the selection of trees. 'Once upon a time, the Kampung Kerinchi community informed that there were several areas used as places where the community came to find bamboo to be cut and sold, so maybe we can look at what species they are,' he said. — Bernama

Nurul Izzah contesting for PKR's No 2 post

Nurul Izzah Anwar was appointed as a PKR vice-president in 2022 after opting not to contest the central leadership elections that year. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar has registered herself as a candidate for the deputy president's post at the party's upcoming central leadership elections. This is based on checks on PKR's election website. Numerous top and divisional leaders had expressed their support for her bid for the number two position, which was won by Rafizi Ramli in 2022 after defeating former PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. Supporters include vice-president Amirudin Shari, Wanita PKR chief Fadhlina Sidek, youth wing chief Adam Adli, and Shamsul Iskandar Akin, the senior political secretary to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The wave of support for Nurul Izzah came in the wake of Rafizi's leave of absence following the PKR divisional polls, which saw the defeat of several key figures aligned with him. Rafizi has confirmed that he will defend his position as PKR deputy president, while Nurul Izzah earlier said she would make 'the best decision possible'. She was appointed as a PKR vice-president in 2022 after opting not to contest the central leadership elections that year. Nurul Izzah served as the Lembah Pantai MP from 2008 to 2018 and was the Permatang Pauh MP from 2018 to 2022. She lost the seat in the last general election (GE15) to PAS's Fawwaz Jan. The battle for the deputy president's post looks poised to be a three-way contest among Nurul Izzah, Rafizi and Saifuddin. However, neither Rafizi nor Saifuddin have officially registered as contestants. Anwar officially registers to defend PKR president's post Anwar has officially submitted his nomination to defend his position as PKR president. As of 4.15pm, only Anwar's name was registered as a contestant for the top post, according to PKR's election website. Anwar, who has led PKR since 2018, is widely expected to retain his position unchallenged – although the final list of contenders will only be confirmed after the objection period closes. Meanwhile, the race for the four vice-president's posts is heating up, with 11 candidates having submitted their nominations so far. The incumbents – Negeri Sembilan menteri besar Aminuddin Harun, Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari, natural resources and environmental sustainability minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, and science, technology and innovation minister Chang Lih Kang – will all be seeking re-election. They will face competition from several other notable figures, including Sungai Buloh MP and deputy entrepreneur development and cooperatives minister R Ramanan, former Selangor executive councillor Hee Loy Sian, Segamat MP R Yuneswaran, former PKR vice-president Mustaffa Kamil Ayub, and Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin. Also joining the fray are senator Abun Sui Anyit and deputy secretary-general Dr N Sathia Prakash. The nominations for the central leadership elections opened yesterday and will close at 11.59pm today.
