Barcelona star arrives in the city ‘to close his exit'

A member of the loan ranks at La Liga giants Barcelona this week returned to the city, in the hopes of securing a permanent exit from the club. That's according to Diario Sport, who point towards Clément Lenglet as the player in question. Advertisement Defender Lenglet for his part spent this past season out on loan away from Barcelona, spending the term in Spain's capital with Atlético Madrid. And the Frenchman went on to find some of his very best form on the books of Diego Simeone's side, on his way to three goals and two assists in 34 appearances across all competitions. The understanding, in turn, is that Atlético and Lenglet alike are keen on extending their time together beyond the coming summer. Ahead of the fast-approaching Club World Cup, a tournament at which he would like to play full part for the Rojiblancos, Lenglet therefore returned to base in Catalunya's capital this week. Advertisement As per a report from Sport: 'He is very comfortable and wants to continue under Simeone's orders. For this reason, the Frenchman arrived in Barcelona on Wednesday to meet with Barça's sporting management.' Barcelona, keen to shift Lenglet's high wages off their books once and for all, are expected to be open to a number of potential avenues when it comes to the stopper's return to Atléti. End of the season

The first team ends the season with a defeat against Atlético de Madrid. The season came to an end. Girona has lived a year of contrasts, with the historic debut in the Champions League in the initial stretch and a long-suffering fight for permanence at the end. The outcome was not the best, with a resounding defeat at home against Atlético, although the result ended up being more voluminous than deserved. In a competitive match and with a minimal disadvantage with three minutes to go, the visitors found the net too easily in the final stretch and ended up scoring with a hat-trick by Sorloth and another goal by Lenglet. Even so, Girona closed the season with the objective of staying in the First Division for one more season. It will be the fourth consecutive and the sixth in total, to continue growing as a Club and consolidate the entity's project at the highest level.

Atletico Madrid tried to sign second Barcelona defender last summer

Atletico Madrid signed Clement Lenglet on loan from Barcelona last summer, and it is safe to say that he has greatly impressed. Club officials are already preparing to make the move permanent, although they will need to pay more money than their first offer, which was submitted recently. Lenglet has been an excellent central defensive option for Atleti alongside Jose Maria Gimenez and Robin Le Normand. It is no surprise that they want him to remain at the club beyond the summer, and Barcelona are happy to sell a player that they have no interest in keeping – and also whose contract is expiring in 2026. Interestingly, Lenglet could not have ended up at Atleti, as prior to his arrival, head coach Diego Simeone wanted a different centre-back from Barcelona – that being Inigo Martinez. As per Sport, Simeone was very interested in Martinez, who was barley counted on by previous Barcelona head coach Xavi Hernandez. However, it was the player himself that turned down the opportunity of a move to Atleti, as he only considered staying in Catalonia. This decision has been vindicated, as Martinez has been a top performer for Barcelona this season. He has developed a very strong partnership with Pau Cubarsi, and he has even been preferred to Ronald Araujo despite the Uruguayan defender having return to action after missing the first half of the campaign with a serious hamstring injury. There could still be hope for Simeone and Atleti in their pursuit of Martinez, who is out of contract at Barcelona at the end of this season. However, a one-year extension has already been agreed, and the hope of the Catalan club is that everything will be finalised in the next few weeks – although they could have to wait until there is space in FFP.

Details: Atlético Madrid table new offer for Barcelona star

The brass at Atlético Madrid have sent a new bid to La Liga rivals Barcelona, to take over permanent ownership of Clément Lenglet. That's according to , who have on Monday provided a fresh insight into the ongoing negotiations between the two clubs. Defender Lenglet of course sealed a fresh departure from Barcelona last summer. Deemed surplus to requirements by Hansi Flick and co, the Frenchman went on to pen terms with the aforementioned Atlético, on loan for the duration of the campaign. And, in the time since, Lenglet has gone on to rebuild his reputation in impressive fashion. After a shaky start to life in Madrid, hampered by fitness problems, recent weeks have seen the 29-year-old establish himself as an important figure in Diego Simeone's backline. All told, Lenglet has been afforded 20 starts across all competitions, chipping in with a pair of goals along the way. As much has long convinced the Atléti board to attempt to make the former Sevilla man's arrival a permanent one this summer. And as alluded to above, the Rojiblancos recently sent a fresh proposal towards precisely that the way of Barcelona. As per a report from Sport: 'The latest red-and-white offer is around five million euros, including fixed bonuses and variables.' Deco and the Barcelona transfer team, however, rejected as much, continuing to demand an altogether more considerable sum in the region of €10 million. The 'logical outcome' is therefore that an agreement is ultimately struck for around €7-8 million. Conor Laird – GSFN
