Julio Rodríguez scratched from Mariners' lineup with back tightness, day to day
HOUSTON (AP) — Seattle Mariners center fielder Julio Rodríguez was scratched from Thursday night's series opener against the Houston Astros with back tightness. Manager Dan Wilson said after Houston's 9-2 win that he would be day to day with the issue. Rodríguez hit a three-run homer in Wednesday's 6-5 win over the White Sox and took batting practice on the field Thursday before the lineup change was announced about 30 minutes before game time. 'It kind of tightened up on him during batting practice today, so just wanting to be precautious with it,' Wilson said. 'Something that's day to day, we'll assess it tomorrow when we get here.' The 2022 American League Rookie of the Year is hitting .231 with nine homers and 28 RBIs. Leody Taveras moved from right field to center field after the scratch and Miles Mastrobuoni was inserted into the lineup to play right field and bat eighth. ___ AP MLB: Kristie Rieken, The Associated Press

Seattle Mariners Recent Pickup Delivered In Clutch When It Counted
While former Texas Rangers player Leody Taveras has been working hard to fit in with his new team, the Seattle Mariners, he delivered a big hit on Wednesday, May 21. Taveras slammed a first-pitch, three-run home run as that was enough to push Seattle past the Chicago White Sox 6-5 at Rate Field in Chicago. After being put on waivers by the Rangers, Taveras got a new leash on life thanks to the Mariners. They picked him up on May 6 and has been an outfield fixture pretty much since that time. Advertisement He took White Sox reliver Mike Vasil deep with two Mariners teammates on base in the top of the eighth inning. Taveras is still trying to find a steady stroke at the plate for Seattle. Still, Mariners manager Dan Wilson was pleased with what he saw on Wednesday. Seattle manager Dan Wilson was pleased with Leody Taveras' efforts at the plate 'He swung the bat very well today,' Wilson said, reported. 'Hit the ball hard just about every time up today. Found the barrel a lot, particularly that last time up, and that was a big lift for us.' Taveras' efforts helped the Mariners secure a series victory over the White Sox, who have been playing better baseball as of late. Seattle, with the win, also kept them in first place in the American League West Division. Advertisement They'll need to keep on piling up wins with the Los Angeles Angels, Houston Astros, and Rangers all nipping at their heels. Cal Raleigh hit his 16th homer of the season for Seattle in the win. That ties him with New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge for the most homers in the American League. Look for the "Big Dumper" to keep slamming dingers as the Mariners' season moves forward. Seattle traveled to Houston after the series ended in Chicago. It opens up a four-game weekend series against the Astros on Thursday night at Daikin Park.
