Umpire attacked after Dickinson softball game, Buffalo man charged with assault
A man has been charged with assault after allegedly attacking a 68-year-old umpire following a softball game in the Town of Dickinson.
Broome County District Attorney Paul Battisti announced on Aug. 4 that Leonard P. Wackowski, of Buffalo, was indicted by a Broome County Grand Jury on July 29 on one count of second-degree assault stemming from the incident.
According to the charges, Carlos Chaluisant, a 68-year-old umpire, was walking to his vehicle following a July 6 game when Wackowski approached him and began yelling at him about calls made during the game. The district attorney's office did not specify which game Chaluisant called.
Wackowski allegedly swept Chaluisant's legs out from under him, causing him to fall to the ground, then "mounted the victim on the ground and struck him."
Wackowski was taken into custody and arraigned in Broome County Court where he pleaded not guilty. He is currently in the custody of the Broome County jail.
