Mission: Impossible Director Hints At Les Grossman Spin-Off With Tom Cruise
Last Updated: Mission: Impossible- The Final Reckoning, Christopher McQuarrie, hinted that a Tropic Thunder spin-off featuring Tom Cruise's Les Grossman could happen. Fans of the 2008 comedy Tropic Thunder may be in for a treat. Christopher McQuarrie, director of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, hinted at a possible spin-off starring Tom Cruise's character, Les Grossman. McQuarrie revealed that he and Cruise had 'serious conversations" about creating a film centred entirely on the wild and unforgettable Grossman. During the shoot of The Final Reckoning, they brainstormed ideas on how to bring the character back freshly and excitingly. The director described these discussions as both hilarious and thrilling as they worked to craft the perfect story for Grossman's return. While appearing on Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused podcast, the filmmaker said, 'Everything will in one way or another happen. It will not necessarily happen in the time or place you think it will. They're all things we're talking about. We have ideas about the conversations we've had about Les Grossman are so funny. I mean, we're talking about it, man. We're having very serious conversations about it and how best to do it and where you know what it ultimately comes to down to what that character is." 'You hit the nail right on the head that I was going to a leading man, Tom Cruise will tell you a leading man has different responsibilities. Tom is just to be sitting at a breakfast table, not talking about the movie we're making for a minute is such decompression, right? And just riffing with Tom playing to Les Grossman at the table was one of the real joys of making this movie. It was all the stuff we were doing, planning the future, while slugging out the present," Christopher McQuarrie added. Fans of Tropic Thunder will instantly recognise Les Grossman—the loud, bald, and fiery movie producer with a short fuse and a larger-than-life personality. One of his most memorable scenes is a video call with the film crew after a disastrous shoot, where he famously orders a crew member to punch the director (played by Steve Coogan) in the face. Another iconic moment fans love is when Grossman breaks into an unexpected, hilarious dance to Ludacris's 'Get Back." Other than Cruise, the 2008 movie also features Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr., Jay Baruchel and Brandon T. Jackson. First Published:

Tom Cruise Is Dead Serious About a Les Grossman Movie, Says Christopher McQuarrie — GeekTyrant
Tom Cruise isn't done with Les Grossman. Not by a long shot. The unhinged Hollywood exec Cruise brought to life in Tropic Thunder might actually be getting his own movie. Mission: Impossible director Christopher McQuarrie confirmed on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he and Cruise are having very real, very serious conversations about it. 'The conversations we've had about Les Grossman are so fucking funny. [Cruise and I are] talking about it, we're having very serious conversations about it, and how best to do it. It ultimately comes down to what that character is.' Grossman is a raging, foul-mouthed, and shockingly agile studio executive best remembered for his hairy arms, big hands, and dance moves that burned themselves into your memory. Cruise's unexpected transformation into Grossman was pure chaos in the best way, and fans have wanted more ever since. According to McQuarrie, riffing on the character has become a kind of therapeutic outlet during the high-stress shoot for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning . He and Cruise would sit down for meals and just let Grossman take over. 'We don't even think about the structure, we play with scenes. Just to be sitting at a breakfast table, not talking about the movie we're making for a minute, is such decompression. 'And just riffing with Tom playing Les Grossman at the table, it was one of the real joys of making this movie. It was all the stuff we were doing, planning the future while slugging out the present.' It's clear there's passion behind the idea, not just as a goofy side project, but something Cruise is taking seriously. The only question now is what a full-length Les Grossman film would actually be. A satire of the modern studio system? A full-blown absurdist comedy? Either way, the enthusiasm and excitement is there. Cruise already stole scenes with the character once. If this thing actually moves forward, he will steal the whole show.

Tom Cruise is ‘very serious' about making a Tropic Thunder spin-off, Christopher McQuarrie says
Tom Cruise is having 'very serious conversations' with Christopher McQuarrie about making a Les Grossman 'Tropic Thunder' spin-off movie. The 62-year-old actor portrayed the foul-mouthed producer in Ben Stiller's 2008 satirical action film, and McQuarrie - who has reportedly been attached to the project since 2022 - has said Cruise is determined to continue Les Grossman's story in his own movie. During an appearance on the 'Happy Sad Confused' podcast, the 'Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning' director said: 'The conversations we've had about Les Grossman are so f****** funny. 'We're talking about it, we're having very serious conversations about it, and how best to do it. 'It ultimately comes down to what that character is.' McQuarrie, 56, added he and Cruise used to bounce ideas off each other for the possible flick during the production of 'Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning'. He said: 'We don't even think about the structure, we play with scenes. Just to be sitting at a breakfast table, not talking about the movie we're making for a minute, is such decompression. 'And just riffing with Tom playing Les Grossman at the table, it was one of the real joys of making this movie. It was all the stuff we were doing, planning the future while slugging out the present.' Talk about a Les Grossman spin-off has been going on for years, with Stiller - who directed and starred in 'Tropic Thunder' as actor Tugg Speedman - previously revealing he had 'discussed' the idea with Cruise. During an interview with Extra, Stiller, 59, said: 'There have been some interchanges about it over the years, yeah. 'Look, Tom Cruise - one of my favorite human beings, one of our great movie stars of all time — it would be fun, but there is nothing in the works. But we have discussed it in the past.' 'Tropic Thunder' - which also stars Robert Downey Jr., Jack Black and Steve Coogan - follows a group of pampered actors filming a war movie in the jungle who are thrust into real danger when they're mistaken for actual soldiers. As chaos unfolds, they must become the heroes they only pretended to be. Reflecting on the movie, Stiller admitted 'Tropic Thunder' likely wouldn't make it past the 'script phase' now due to its controversial elements. He said: 'Somebody should be making movies that are that out-there. If it is clear where the joke is, and it is clear what your point of view is, you have to take those chances … I think comedy is going to get there.' The 'Zoolander' star added Downey Jr.'s Kirk Lazarus - a white actor who undergoes 'pigmentation alteration' surgery to temporarily darken his skin for his portrayal of the black character - was a particular aspect of 'Tropic Thunder' that would likely sink any chances of making the movie today. He told Collider: 'Yeah, the idea of Robert playing that character who's playing an African American character, I mean, incredibly dicey. Even at the time, of course, it was dicey too. 'The only reason we attempted it was I felt like the joke was very clear in terms of who that joke was on — actors trying to do anything to win awards. 'But now, in this environment, I don't even know if I would have ventured to do it, to tell you the truth. I'm being honest.'
