Tom Cruise is ‘very serious' about making a Tropic Thunder spin-off, Christopher McQuarrie says

Tom Cruise is having 'very serious conversations' with Christopher McQuarrie about making a Les Grossman 'Tropic Thunder' spin-off movie.
The 62-year-old actor portrayed the foul-mouthed producer in Ben Stiller's 2008 satirical action film, and McQuarrie - who has reportedly been attached to the project since 2022 - has said Cruise is determined to continue Les Grossman's story in his own movie.
During an appearance on the 'Happy Sad Confused' podcast, the 'Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning' director said: 'The conversations we've had about Les Grossman are so f****** funny.
'We're talking about it, we're having very serious conversations about it, and how best to do it.
'It ultimately comes down to what that character is.'
McQuarrie, 56, added he and Cruise used to bounce ideas off each other for the possible flick during the production of 'Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning'.
He said: 'We don't even think about the structure, we play with scenes. Just to be sitting at a breakfast table, not talking about the movie we're making for a minute, is such decompression.
'And just riffing with Tom playing Les Grossman at the table, it was one of the real joys of making this movie. It was all the stuff we were doing, planning the future while slugging out the present.'
Talk about a Les Grossman spin-off has been going on for years, with Stiller - who directed and starred in 'Tropic Thunder' as actor Tugg Speedman - previously revealing he had 'discussed' the idea with Cruise.
During an interview with Extra, Stiller, 59, said: 'There have been some interchanges about it over the years, yeah.
'Look, Tom Cruise - one of my favorite human beings, one of our great movie stars of all time — it would be fun, but there is nothing in the works. But we have discussed it in the past.'
'Tropic Thunder' - which also stars Robert Downey Jr., Jack Black and Steve Coogan - follows a group of pampered actors filming a war movie in the jungle who are thrust into real danger when they're mistaken for actual soldiers.
As chaos unfolds, they must become the heroes they only pretended to be.
Reflecting on the movie, Stiller admitted 'Tropic Thunder' likely wouldn't make it past the 'script phase' now due to its controversial elements.
He said: 'Somebody should be making movies that are that out-there. If it is clear where the joke is, and it is clear what your point of view is, you have to take those chances … I think comedy is going to get there.'
The 'Zoolander' star added Downey Jr.'s Kirk Lazarus - a white actor who undergoes 'pigmentation alteration' surgery to temporarily darken his skin for his portrayal of the black character - was a particular aspect of 'Tropic Thunder' that would likely sink any chances of making the movie today.
He told Collider: 'Yeah, the idea of Robert playing that character who's playing an African American character, I mean, incredibly dicey. Even at the time, of course, it was dicey too.
'The only reason we attempted it was I felt like the joke was very clear in terms of who that joke was on — actors trying to do anything to win awards.
'But now, in this environment, I don't even know if I would have ventured to do it, to tell you the truth. I'm being honest.'

Country star Kelsea Ballerini 'needs a break'

Kelsea Ballerini plans to "figure out what's next" over the summer. The 31-year-old singer wrapped Kelsea Ballerini Live on Tour in April and she now plans to take a prolonged break from the music industry, before embarking on her next challenge. Kelsea - who also made her debut on 'The Voice' earlier this year - said on 'TODAY with Jenna and Friends': "I need a break! "And I've never been able to say that before, but I really think it's just time for me to pump the brakes, figure out what's next, have a summer, what?! Go to the beach? Huh? Learn to cook a new meal, hang out with the dogs, so that's kind of my agenda." Kelsea observed that her plans are often derailed by unforeseen events and career opportunities. She added: "I'm very open to whatever is out there." Kelsea also revealed that she relished her experience on 'The Voice'. The 'Half of My Hometown' hitmaker reflected: "I think ending my first arena tour, ending my first time on 'The Voice', it's just been such a beautiful season of doing things that are out of my comfort zone and bigger than I've ever done and it's been really fulfilling. I love being in that seat." Earlier this month, John Legend observed that Kelsea has been "very good" on 'The Voice'. The singer debuted as a coach on the hit TV show in February, and John was impressed by his co-star, describing her as a "wonderful" addition to the line-up. John, 46 - who serves as one of the coaches alongside Kelsea, Michael Buble and Adam Levine - told 'Extra': "She took to the show quickly. "She's been a guest on the show before; she guest coached for Kelly [Clarkson] before and so I think she came in just knowing how everything worked and she was ready to go. "She has such a great personality. She's been very good at winning artists for her team, especially the ladies. I definitely knew I had no chance against her with some of the ladies. You could tell the girl power thing was working. "She's been wonderful and she's been great to get to know on the show."

Mission: Impossible has been the adventure of a lifetime, says Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise's 'Mission: Impossible' experience has been "the adventure of a lifetime". The 62-year-old actor has played fictional agent Ethan Hunt in eight 'Mission: Impossible' films since 1996, and Tom has now taken to social media to reflect on his experience with the money-spinning movie franchise. The Hollywood star - who has been busily promoting 'Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning' in recent weeks - wrote on Instagram: "Over 30 years ago, I began the journey of producing my first film, Mission: Impossible. Since then, these eight films have taken me on the adventure of a lifetime." Tom's social media post features an array of throwback, behind-the-scenes photos from each of the 'Mission: Impossible' films. And Tom has thanked all of his 'Mission: Impossible' colleagues - including directors, actors, artists, and crews - who have played a role in the success of the film franchise. He wrote on the photo-sharing platform: "To the incredible directors, actors, artists, and crews across the globe that have helped bring these stories to life, I thank you. It has been a privilege to work alongside you all." Tom also expressed his thanks to fans of the 'Mission: Impossible' franchise. The movie star continued: "Most importantly, I want to thank the audience, for whom it is our great pleasure to create these films, and for whom we all serve. We're thrilled to share The Final Reckoning with you." Meanwhile, Tom previously confessed to going "too far" with his action stunts. The 'Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning' star admitted to taking things to the extreme for his action scenes. Speaking to 'Extra', Tom confessed: "I always go too far, but I don't mind it. I always go too far." Tom is always willing to put his body on the line in order to make the best 'Mission: Impossible' movie The actor - who has suffered various injuries during his career, including a broken ankle while shooting 2018's 'Mission: Impossible - Fallout' - explained: "I fly aerobatic airplanes, I fly jets, I fly helicopters, and this took all of our ability and all of our skill to be able find the camera angles to tell this story." Tom has needed to be in tip-top physical shape to shoot all of the 'Mission: Impossible' movies. And the veteran film star suggested that the latest movie will surpass fan expectations. Tom - who remains one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood - said: "Physically, what I had to do to prepare for this thing was quite extreme, and I can tell you this - whatever people see in the trailer or on TV, it is not even a taste of what they have in store for them when they see this film."

Jackie Chan reveals how Karate Kid and Rocky stopped him from 'giving up'

Jackie Chan wanted to "give up" his acting dreams before seeing 'Karate Kid' and 'Rocky'. The 71-year-old movie legend - who plays kung fu mentor Mr. Han in new movie 'Karate Kid: Legends' - has opened up on how the original 1984 film inspired him to keep going with his own Hollywood dreams. He told Extra: 'This year, I'm in the film industry 64 years. 'I remember when I was a stunt guy, at that time, action movie not popular anymore. We don't know what to do. I try to give up. "Then, when the 'Karate Kid' coming, I went with some friends, we buy the ticket, we go see it. And when I see it, I see the energy, I see the positive message, then I think, 'I should not give up. Life knock me down, I get back up.' "Then I go back to training… another movie coming up called 'Rocky.' Then I see 'Rocky,' 'Eye of the Tiger,' wow! And suddenly full of energy.' At the time, he was focused on training in the dojo, but a director saw his moves and instantly advised him to take a big step. He recalled: "'You be an actor'. Luckily, I didn't give up. I still keep training. That makes me day." The 'Rush Hour' actor turned 71 in April, but Jackie isn't interested in slowing down, revealing that he'll always perform his own stunts and that he has no plans to retire. Speaking to Haute Living magazine, Jackie shared: "Of course, I always do my own stunts. It's who I am. That's not changing until the day I retire, which is never!" Jackie is well-known for performing acrobatic and innovative stunts. But at this stage in his career, Jackie doesn't require much preparations for his action scenes. The movie star explained: "When you've done it for 64 years straight, there's no physical preparation anymore. Everything is in your heart and soul; it is muscle memory." Jackie noted that technological advances have also changed the movie business. The 'Foreigner' star said: "In the old days, the only [choice we had] was to be there and jump; that's it. Today, with computers, actors can do anything, but there's always a sense of reality that you feel is missing."
