The Hangout: Bowling for soup

I have always loved beautiful stories that both inspire and uplift, and that is exactly what we get when we dare to dream big, persevere through challenges, and look back at the journey of legendary South African icon Ina Paarman. I am all about celebrating our heritage and paying tribute to the local legends who have shaped our foody culture. After all, we know local is lekker, and today I am shining a light on a woman who had the courage to stand tall and now exports her renowned range of spices, seasonings, sauces, and more to thirty-two countries across the globe. What an unbelievable accomplishment. In 1982, Ina took a bold leap of faith. She left behind the security of her lecturing job to open a cookery school in her family's converted garage. At the time, the concept was unfamiliar and initially slow to gain traction. Most people were not accustomed to paying for cooking lessons, and Ina had no advertising budget to spread the word. Undeterred, she sent her teenage sons out on bicycles to deliver homemade flyers throughout the neighbourhood. What started as a humble home business gradually blossomed, and seven years later, her school had become hugely popular. This success was fuelled by Ina's infectious passion for both cooking and teaching, qualities that turned every lesson into an experience. (Kinda makes me think she's our very own Julia Child in a way but she's also giving Elizabeth Zott in the Lessons in Chemistry series.) I am genuinely grateful that this queen of cooking stayed the course. She has made my life not only more delicious but also so much easier. In the rush of modern life, we are constantly searching for ways to simplify our routines. Often, we reach for convenience and occasionally compromise on health, which is perfectly fine now and again. However, it is comforting to know there are brands like Ina Paarman that offer convenience that's healthy too. Her products are packed with flavour and goodness, and for me, they carry a deep sense of nostalgia. We are roughly the same age, so I remember growing up with her iconic products in our home, and now with the new #HiberNation campaign, all those special memories are flooding back. The Paarman team explains that the #HiberNation campaign captures exactly what we all feel when winter sets in: the desire to retreat, recharge, and reach for something nourishing, comforting, and delicious. Ina Paarman's range is designed for this very season, allowing you to create wholesome, hearty meals with ease and satisfaction. That is the magic of comfort food. It warms us from the inside out, makes us smile, and brings a sense of peace in the middle of winter's chill. For instant gratification, the Ready To Serve Soups are a brilliant choice. The Beef and Lentil Soup is rich in collagen and wonderfully hearty, while the Country Chicken Soup offers both great flavour and a range of health benefits thanks to its rich, real chicken broth. And let's be honest, chicken soup is good for the soul too, right? All of them are delicious, but for me, nothing beats the Tomato Soup, especially with a golden toasted cheese sandwich for dipping. You had me at hello, Ina Paarman's Tomato Soup. I could go on forever about all of my favourites, but instead, I encourage you to explore the many wonderful recipes available on the website at . Follow the #HiberNation campaign for weekly inspiration, from clever tips to wholesome, home-cooked meals that make winter feel a little more magical. Bon appétit and Nikonwabele ukutya kwenu.

The curious case of a literary recipe for murder by mushroom

'Luckily, there are much faster ways to kill off your loved ones,' she continued, walking to her easel, where a selection of mushroom drawings was on display, 'and mushrooms are an excellent place to start.' - Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus, 2022. Life, it is said, sometimes imitates art. And vice versa. And so it might have seemed to curious bibliophiles as the so-called mushroom trial stretched on in Morwell over recent months. As evidence piled upon evidence, and the defendant, Erin Pattison, kept chanting 'incorrect' and 'inaccurate', a friend drew my attention to a novel entitled ' Lessons in Chemistry '. It was a publishing phenomenon when it hit the bookshops in 2022, a year before the Gippsland murders. It was Dymocks' Book of the Year in Australia that year, and became the No.1 borrowed book (most in e-book form) from US libraries in 2023. It became hot stuff in Australian libraries, too. When detectives first began questioning Patterson about her mushroom-infused beef Wellington luncheon in July 2023 that killed three members of her estranged husband's family, it was reported that Lessons in Chemistry had a months-long waiting list of 61 at Leongatha Library. Since then, the book clearly became a favourite purchase – numerous dog-eared copies can now be found in op-shops all around the Latrobe Valley, according to keen-eyed book-lovers. The book's fictional protagonist is Elizabeth Zott, who becomes a TV cooking show host in 1960s California after being sacked as a chemist.

Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson's untitled comedy series on hold

Filming on the highly anticipated untitled comedy series from Apple TV plus, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson , has been temporarily halted, multiple sources told Deadline. The series, produced by Skydance Television, was in production in Austin, Texas, where filming was suspended late last week. Cast members, including Holland Taylor, Natalie Martinez, and Brittany Ishibashi, were sent home as a result of the pause, as per Deadline. The reason behind the hiatus stems from creative differences involving the show's direction, specifically how to conclude the series' first season. Notably, the departure of showrunner David West Read, who had been leading the project thus far, has played a significant role in the delay. However, there is good news for fans eager to see the series completed: Veteran comedy showrunner Lee Eisenberg, known for his work on 'Jury Duty' and 'Little America', is currently in talks to become the new showrunner. Eisenberg, who most recently created and executive produced Apple TV plus's 'Lessons in Chemistry', could take over the reins for the final two episodes, along with likely reshoots, sources indicate, as reported by Deadline. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo The series is inspired by the real-life friendship between McConaughey and Harrelson, who also serve as executive producers. As they navigate the ups and downs of family life, both characters find themselves grappling with the strange beauty of their connection. An ensemble cast, including Oona Yaffe, Highdee Kuan, Nolan Almeida, Ella Grace Helton, and Noah Carganilla, joins McConaughey and Harrelson in the series. Skydance Television is producing the series for Apple TV plus.
