Ed Sheeran digs up old phone, finds goldmine of memories and a new song
LONDON, May 1 — Most of us forget where we even left our old phones. Ed Sheeran? He turned his back on his in 2015 — only to be reunited with it years later thanks to a court order. What followed was less courtroom drama and more emotional deep dive, as the singer-songwriter discovered long-lost texts, forgotten photos, and even inspiration for a new track. Sheeran described the experience as 'such an emotional journey' that it led him to write 'Old Phone', a song set to drop today at 11pm Malaysian time. In an April 29 Instagram post tagging @teddysoldphone, Sheeran shared a carousel of never-before-seen moments pulled straight from the dusty archives of his old mobile. Among them: a cute photo of him and now-wife Cherry Seaborn back when they were dating, a wefie with Taylor Swift, and even a shot with former US President Bill Clinton. Sheeran explained that he shut down the phone in December 2015 and went full email-only for communication. But during his copyright case over 'Thinking Out Loud' — he was accused of copying Marvin Gaye's 'Let's Get It On' — a judge ordered him to hand the device over. That moment cracked open a time capsule. 'In the process, I switched on my old phone,' he wrote. 'The first message was from my friend (English deejay) Jamal Edwards, who had recently passed away (in 2022). 'The second was from my ex-girlfriend, whom I hadn't been in contact with for years. 'The third was a family member I haven't spoken to in a decade. And so on. It felt like a time capsule, a time of life that I was in, and living at that time in 2015.' It only got more intense from there. 'Turning it on really spun me out,' Sheeran said. 'I found myself scrolling through messages and conversations with people who are no longer here. 'I found myself crying at messages to friends who are now dead, whom I won't get to speak to again. 'I found old photos of me with people I was so close to then, but we've lost touch since.' Some of those memories are now public, thanks to the Instagram account he tagged. Though @teddysoldphone has been quietly uploading pictures since March, it only caught fire after Sheeran linked it from his main account. Fans were treated to behind-the-scenes snaps, including a 2015 Billboard Music Awards photo featuring Sheeran, Taylor Swift, her then-boyfriend Calvin Harris, and One Direction's Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan. 'Dribbly drunk,' Sheeran admitted. Other standout moments? Swift munching on pizza. Harry Styles chauffeuring Sheeran around. A pool-playing night out with the late rapper Mac Miller. 'Mac took me round Pittsburgh in 2015, we played a lot of pool and had a really really fun night. Miss him,' Sheeran shared. And yes, there's even a shot of Sheeran with Bruno Mars and one with Ellie Goulding — with whom he was once rumoured to have had a fling. That old gossip? Still alive, especially among fans who suspect his 2014 track 'Don't' was about her alleged fling with Horan. As for that poker game with Bill Clinton? That's on there too. One thing's for sure: Sheeran's old phone didn't just carry contacts. It carried a whole era — and now, it's inspired a brand-new tune.

UNCAPTIONED: Terrence Howard turned down Marvin Gaye biopic because he didn't want to kiss a man
Terrence Howard rejected the starring role in a Marvin Gaye biopic because he didn't want to kiss a man. The Empire actor revealed on Bill Maher's Club Random podcast that the "biggest mistake" of his career was turning down a Smokey Robinson biopic because he was already in talks with director Lee Daniels about playing Marvin Gaye in a different film. However, he ultimately passed on playing the Let's Get It On hitmaker too following a chat with famed music producer Quincy Jones. 'I was over at Quincy Jones' house and I'm asking Quincy, 'I'm hearing rumours that Marvin was gay' and I'm like, 'Was he gay?' And Quincy's like, 'Yes.'" The Iron Man actor decided that he "could not" star in a film that required him to explore the soul musician's rumoured homosexuality. 'They would've wanted to do that, and I wouldn't have been able to do that," he stated. When podcast host Maher asked Howard if he "couldn't kiss a man on screen in a movie", he replied, "No. Because I don't fake it.' "That would f--k me," he added. "I would cut my lips off. If I kissed some man, I would cut my lips off.' The Hustle & Flow star insisted he wasn't homophobic and that it was more an issue of being able to fully commit to the character. 'That's fine, do what you love to do, but don't do it at me, don't aim it at me," Howard concluded. "I can't play that character 100%, I can't. I can't surrender myself to a place I don't understand.' Instructions: THIS VIDEO MUST NOT BE EDITED FOR LENGTH TO COMBINE WITH OTHER CONTENT

Taylor Swift to One Direction: Ed Sheeran's pre-2016 photo haul is all things nostalgia — with an India connect!
Knowing Ed Sheeran, it wouldn't be a surprise if he just happened to bombard the internet with as many as 210 pictures — collated into a post each with a descriptive caption on an all-together new Instagram account — just for kicks. But the whole exercise actually ties into his upcoming single titled Old Phone. What makes this whole thing an absolute treat is the fact that all the photos are from December 2015 and before. So this is like a decade worth of lost moments, most of them never seen by the public, featuring then and now pop royalty names like Taylor Swift and Harry Styles (and yes, given the time frame, the OG One Direction gang too). While us and the internet is having a gala time swiping through this memory dump, the adjoining caption in the joint post made by Ed to his original Instagram account teddysphotos, explains the deeper purpose behind it. A post shared by Ed Sheeran (@teddysphotos) Back in 2014, Ed was sued for his hit track Thinking out Loud. The estate of Marvin Gaye claimed that the song had elements from Let's Get It On — he was cleared by a jury in November. Ed explained, "When I got sued, the judge ordered me to give up my old devices to the other sides lawyers, to look through messages, emails, voice notes, videos, etc, to see if there's was anything on there to help their case. In the process, I switched on my old phone". And what he found were messages — from a friend who had since, passed away, an ex-girlfriend he had been in no-contact with and even a family member who he had been estranged with. This and scrolling through countless conversations with people who had been in his life but aren't there anymore is what inspired him to write Old Phone at 2AM when he was in jet lagged — in India! It was recorded the very next morning and will be out later this week. More than the song itself, it's Ed's concluding note on the caption which leaves us with some food for thought: "Maybe it makes you switch on your old phone and have a look at where you were a decade ago too".

Ed Sheeran shares decade-old photos on new Instagram ahead of ‘Old Phone' single release.
Ed Sheeran has launched a personal Instagram archive titled @teddysoldphone, unveiling unseen photos and messages from a mobile device he retired in 2015. The account, which has been quietly growing since March, was formally introduced ahead of the release of his new single, 'Old Phone,' arriving 1 May 2025. Among the over 200 posts are intimate moments from Sheeran's past, including photos with Taylor Swift, Calvin Harris, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Elton John, Usher, Sam Smith and Jamal Edwards. A standout post captures a lively scene from the 2015 Billboard Music Awards, featuring Sheeran mid-drink with Swift and Harris in costume, joined by One Direction's Horan and Tomlinson. The archive also showcases a jar of homemade jam gifted by Swift, bearing a tongue-in-cheek label referencing Kanye West's infamous 2009 interruption. 'This label still makes me laugh,' Sheeran wrote. The idea for the account and song began during a copyright trial in 2024, when Sheeran was required to revisit his old phone for evidence. He was later cleared of copying Marvin Gaye's 'Let's Get It On.' The experience, however, stirred unexpected emotion. 'I found myself crying at messages to friends who are now dead,' he said. 'It felt like a time capsule.' 'Old Phone' reflects on those memories, written alone in India at 2 a.m. Sheeran said it feels like a song from his debut album, but with the depth of recent life experience. He also shared messages and photos involving his wife, Cherry Seaborn, from their early relationship, noting how important she's been through these chapters. The track follows April's 'Azizam,' and precedes another single, 'Sapphire,' planned for later this year. Sheeran performed 'Old Phone' at Coachella 2025 and built a themed British pub at the festival to promote it.

Ed Sheeran posts throwback pictures with Taylor Swift for new single Old Phone
Ever looked through a phone you retired and got a blast from the past? English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran did. And it was, as the 34-year-old said, 'such an emotional journey' that he even wrote a song for it titled, well, Old Phone. In an Instagram post tagged @teddysoldphone on April 29, Sheeran uploaded never-before-seen pictures, texts and notes from the phone he had stopped using in 2015. They included photos and videos of himself, including a picture with now-wife Cherry Seaborn when they were dating, and an old undated wefie with pop superstar Taylor Swift. In the caption, Sheeran said he had turned his old phone off in December 2015 and moved all communications to e-mail full time. But when he was sued in a copyright case, the judge ordered him to surrender the device to the opposing side's lawyers. Sheeran, who was accused of copying Marvin Gaye's classic Let's Get It On (1973) for his 2014 hit Thinking Out Loud, eventually won the case in 2023. The case was first brought against him in 2018. He wrote: 'In the process, I switched on my old phone. The first message was from my friend (English deejay) Jamal Edwards, who had recently passed away (in 2022). The second was from my ex-girlfriend, whom I hadn't been in contact with for years. The third was a family member I haven't spoken to in a decade. And so on. It felt like a time capsule, a time of life that I was in, and living at that time in 2015. 'Turning it on really spun me out, I found myself scrolling through messages and conversations with people who are no longer here. I found myself crying at messages to friends who are now dead, whom I won't get to speak to again. I found old photos of me with people I was so close to then, but we've lost touch since.' He then wrote the song Old Phone. It will be released on May 1 at 11pm, Singapore time. Pictures have been posted by the account @teddysoldphone since the end of March, but netizens took notice only when the Shape Of You (2017) singer recently tagged it on his main account. One of the photos was from the 2015 Billboard Music Awards, showing Sheeran, boy band One Direction's Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan, as well as Swift and her then-boyfriend, singer Calvin Harris. Sheeran said he was 'dribbly drunk' at the time. Other snaps show Swift eating pizza, singer Harry Styles driving Sheeran around in a car, and a night out with late American rapper Mac Miller, who died of a drug overdose in 2018. Sheeran wrote on the post about Miller: 'Mac took me round Pittsburgh in 2015, we played a lot of pool and had a really really fun night. Miss him.' There are also pictures of Sheeran with pop stars Bruno Mars and Ellie Goulding. Sheeran and Goulding were once rumoured to be a couple. Fans speculated that Sheeran wrote the song Don't (2014) – about a girl who broke his heart – after she allegedly cheated on him with Horan. The account even has a picture of Sheeran with former United States President Bill Clinton, whom the singer said he once played poker with.
